Hello! It's Johnny (currently in pain from my op, but riding a smooth current of Vicodin)
I know that there have been many people out there making their statements clear on the Tank lately. It's been making me very curious as to how everyone stands at this very moment in their view of G.I. Joe. I've been collecting G.I. Joe since 25th Anniversary and my faithfulness to the brand as a whole runs deep. (I love me some Joe.) BUT I have been disappointed as to how they've been handling the brand as a whole after the movie had, in my opinion, flopped. It's a shame since the brand has a very intricate history of success and failures. (Not to drag this on...) BUT HOW do you think Hasbro could have kept the steam going for fans and children alike??? Do you think that they could have omitted anything?! I NEED TO KNOW. (Especially since it will keep me entertained while I am on meds...)

IMO Hasbro is not allowing G.I. Joe to gain any momentum. Just when the 25th line was getting good, they stop it for all the ROC movie stuff. Then there was Resolute, which IMO... was such an awesome cartoon, but then no marketing, no toys (until much later) and even this too was killed by the ROC movie IMO.
And then the Renegades cartoon gets killed in one season and the few Renegades toys are released way later. Then there is POC... which is pretty cool, but only had a few waves and will eventually give way to the 30th and Renegades stuff. And then right after that the 30th stuff will give way to the Joe 2 movie which is a semi re-boot. The face of G.I. Joe keeps changing too often and too fast IMO... it is like the G.I. Joe brand has schizophrenia.

There in lies your probem. In my opinion, I don't know if it flopped, or not. I don't really understand hollywood these days. A movie will flop and a year later a reboot is announced and things proceed from what ever version in the last 5 years did the best. A director shows up who likes movie W & Y, but thinks movies X & Z suck, stepping over them and the media hype that surrounds the next release is dependant upon you understanding that some parts apply and others do not apply because you might or might not be a long time fan who will do the research required to give a shit about a trip to the movie theater to see it in the first place. The internet has gone from fantsy to actually being a part of every aspect of your life. That's why you are even familiar with people who defend the SW prequels by saying "but if you read the books!" bullshit. If the internet had been around when gone with the wind came out, I can promise you none of these useless websites would be listing it in the top ten of greatest movies.

Hasbro has to sell the toys to the big retailers. Hasbro tries to wow the toy buyer that works at the big box store headquarters by presenting a big movie, tv cartoon tie-in, etc. That way the toy buyer for a particular retailer thinks it will sell based on past sales, big movie tie-in, successful cartoon potential, or maybe the toy buyers just make bad descisions and Hasbro can't persuade them.
We, the toy collector, can go to the toy convention all day long and say we will personally buy 13,500 Vipers. However, being an epic collector doesn't mean that figure shown in the case will be ordered in mass a few months later by a store like Toys R Us. |

IMO everything needs to tie in together.
Renegades? I've watched two episodes and see little relation other than character names to ARAH, the comics, ROC or POC. Why not have a cartoon and comic series that sets the stage for Joe 2? Why not tie the current line of figures into both? Pursuit of Cobra is a good title why not run with it across the board? I think this would galvanize in kids heads what the brand is and provide a great play/ story line to go along with it. I also think they should pay tribute to the current real life fighting forces. I'm not talking about a special tribute line but work them in like the old ARAH. Put joes in current gear and fatigues, put a summary of the branch on the file card. Gung Ho, Torpedo, Airbourne, etc. Kids see these guys on TV; if they have action figures in hand that represent the branches it helps build respect and admiration for true heros. I feel the brand is spread across too many story lines and alternate universes to really impact kids, who should be the main consumer. |

I actually really amazed at how much effort Hasbro is putting into the brand. GI Joe has been a minor player since the early 90's on the toy-shelves. Over 20 years and it has not caught on or seen a resurgence to it's once great stature, unlike Transformers.
Hasbro still continues to throw stuff at the wall and hope for something that sticks. Has this caused a misstep or two, of course. Many in fact. I see it though as just them attempting to put a product out that once again resonates with the public. We're fans of GI Joe, we're going to be hyper-critical of any action Hasbro takes. There will never be enough on the pegs for us. We need accept though that if GI Joe was a popular brand there would be more for us. Sadly though it's not. Unless they keep trying to reinvent it though it will never see the prominence that it once had. All we can do is be patient. No one at the big H is trying to destroy GI Joe. They are just trying to breath some life back into it. A life that far exceeds just us buying the line.

(Already loving this conversation)
I think in part there are a few great things that Hasbro is doing. They are definitely putting their necks out and taking that risk to change the brand to see what fits. They are courageous. BUT Like Hazemat said, IDENTITY CRISIS. Changing it too much was the fault. I think they had a really good run with 25th line and it seemed as if the momentum was going to carry them with RESOLUTE but the damn movie line was to ambiguous. I wished that maybe Hasbro treated ROC as they are with the Thor Movie line. Limited in number but satisfactory.
