I know Wizard magazine and Toyfare are no more and I was wondering if there are any magazines left out there that come out monthly. I found Lee's guide but I was wanting one that could be picked up in a book store.

Sadly the internet has killed print whether it be magazines or newspapers. I was sad to see Toyfare go, but then I realized that I hadn't purchased a copy in years. I even had a subscription at one point along with Wizard, Star Wars Insider, and others. I even subscribed to video game magzines like Nintendo Power and Electronic Gaming Monthly, but I see no point in doing that anymore.

the b&n around here seems to have dropped lee's guide, never bought one but they were fun to look at. perhaps that's why they don't stock em anymore.

I can't say I'm sad to see monthly news magazines go. At $5-6 a pop, the information comes at least a month late. What's the point anymore? You can get your news instantly, and if you care about price guides, just go look at what things are selling for on ebay.

Lee's is still the only magazine I know of that has leads before the internet. Sometimes they are small snippets of info but info pays off.
I remember in 2008 they had Marvel Legends info for the Target wave that no internet site at the time had up. It is sad to see Toy Fare go. Yes they were beat by the internet for images and news, all they had left was their humor. Perhaps in the future, ideally we'll see some comprehensive toy magazines return, however they have to go beyond news. They have to give us something we don't see on the net, and due to their format, they have the potential, however I doubt publishers are going to take that chance. They might see it as a risk. Toy Fare boiled down to news, new images, and a small mini-priceguide as well as editorials. Had they also featured in depth toy reviews, articles focusing on the past, et al, I think they would've had a fighting chance. Lesson learned though, for print magazines, you have to go beyond toy news, as the internet will have you beat by at least 1 month. So give readers something to look back at. Is it more convenient to load up a site and read about toys or to open an in depth magazine anytime you want and read? The whole reason why we still read books is because they have content that we sometimes cannot find anywhere else. The same, IMHO, applies to magazines. |
