My personal Joe verse is whatever I like, really. I am a child of the late 80s/early 90s but I still actively collect all Joes from all time periods. Of course, I'll always have a special affinity for the 82-94 ARAH line, but I still thoroughly enjoy the new stuff, and I especially enjoy POC it has really rejuvenated my love of Joe.
Also just to throw this out there, POC is HEAVILY inspired by 80s pop-culture. So I think it has a lot of the appeal the 80s stuff had, it has large influences from Predator, Alien, Top Gun, Karate Kid, etc. In a way it's almost more Cold War era than ARAH was. |

Well said Spacemonkey! That's exactly how I feel. About The One Enemy, about Guns and Planes and Vehicles that looked HAWT, and even, yes, Michael Golden is friggin' awesome. I still need to re-buy that Yearbook. I loved that story, awesome. I like The Old better than the New. Blame nostalgia, or just old before my time, I don't care. It all goes back to the beginning, when the threat of Nuclear Annhilation was a part of daily life. These terrorists with their dirty bombs... Puhlease! Nothing, NOTHING! beats the red scare and fingers on the button. Long live the cold war.

In my Joe-verse Duke and his cousin Bazooka live in a rural part of Tennessee with their hot cousin Scarlett and their Uncle Hawk who makes moonshine. Duke and Bazook have to run the moonshine across the county in their really cool Vamp Charger without getting caught by Boss Cobra and his goofball Sheriff Bloodo Picotrain.

My Joe-verse is set in the future, probably 2060 or so. Countries still exist, But most of the third world countries have bloc-ed up and have become new Superpowers. But even then, their might pales in comparison to large corporate entities which many have purchased their own "soveriegn" space in the forms of arcologies or leasing whole sections of countries. Cobra exists in this form, with a public Corporate face and it's shadowy terrorist cabal form, hiding behind fronts and striking out to alter the balance of global power for some hidden purpose. GIJoe exists as a Global Joint operation to investigate "seemingly unrelated" brush wars and mysterious terrorist strikes, eventually unraveling the existence of COBRA.
It's basically a cyberpunk setting for my joes, and it allows me to re-imagine characters as i see fit. |

Cold war and terrorism go well together. Additionally the ninjas are pesky too.

My "Joeverse" would take place more or less between 1982 and 1992 or so. I like the Cold War as a backdrop, and as the Cold War ended, it created all these interesting changing political dynamics and countries like Borovia and W. Land seemed so believeable.
I don't think there were really clearer distinctions between good and evil back then, I think things were just less controversial. People in the US and most of the Western world were more or less united in an understanding that it was "us and them." I don't think the same applies today. What I like about a Joeverse based in the 80s is that it includes a manageable cast, and probably less than 25 major Cobra troop types (all the post 92 troop types and different outfits just confuse me). I like that G.I.Joe in the 80s was tied to the legacy of Vietnam, and it didn't require timebending, and there was that interesting back and forth with the Oktober Guard.

i think a lot of mine is stuck in the 80's, too.
(just bc that was my childhood and the toys relate to that era.) but... i modernize when need be... and i like a lot of the new stuff. i'd say i am sorta multi-generational when i buy stuff...i take from all the eras. but at the core, my heart's in the 80's tho, bc it was a simpler time for me. |
