I was talking to my wife the other day, during a Gi Joe hunt, and we started reminsicing about playing GI Joe when we were kids. No, not playing with the toys, but running around as the characters.
We realized you never really got to pick who you were, when it was time to pick teams, you really got stuck with who you resembled. She was a redhead, so she inveitably got stuck as Scarlett. Even though she wore glasses, the hair was the deciding factor. She always wanted to be the Baroness. I got stuck with either Roadblock, Stalker, Alpine, or God forbid, Doc (playing as him consisted of staying at "base" and tending to the "wounded", no offense to any military medics, as a kid though that wasn't too fun) but I remember buying a ski mask, a toy Uzi, and having the OFFICAL Snake Eyes shades, so there was no arguing who I got to be. I also remember passing out one summer ( I lived in Ft Hood, TX at the time) wearing all that damn black and that stupid ski mask. Sorry, it's a slow week waiting for Wave 9 and the new vehicles, just wanted to share! Last edited by gdztoyz; 06-19-2008 at 06:48 PM.. |

It was always Tunnel Rat for me because I hit my growth spurt late. No, I'm not Asian, so it wasn't that. Just being the shortest kid.

I don't recall ever pretending to BE a GI Joe character. My choice would have been Snake Eyes or Storm Shadow of course. I do remember getting to be "Dutch" from the Predator film everytime we played "guns" because I had taped a tube (grenade launcher) to the bottom of my plastic M-16.

I was a tall blonde kid so I usually got stuck being duke or hawk until '86 when I assumed the role of Low-light! I even had a wooden toy bolt action rifle that I taped an old black flashlight to and a mini-uzi cap gun! Much better than duke or hawk in my opinion. LOL

Man, we never played AS GI Joe characters. When we played "guns" we just assumed roles. Since I owned a toy bolt action rifle - replica of an 03 Springfield- and some of my dad's old fatigues, I usually got to be a sniper.
One year that was my Halloween costume...complete with black and green camo paint included in some of my Joe figures. Good times. Good thread.

I have two younger sisters (by 2 and 3 years), and while I don't ever recall exactly who I chose to be when I played with my (mostly male) cousins, with my sisters, I was Clutch, my sister Amy was Scarlett and my sister Megan was Stalker.
It's funny, because no matter what we played, my sister Megan always chose to be the black guy. If it was Star Wars, I was Luke, Amy was Leia, and Megan was Lando. If it was the A-Team, I was Murdoc, Amy was Amy, and Megan was Mr. T. Nothing racist, but the area we grew up in didn't have a lot of African Americans, and Megan was fascinated by them as a kid. Kids are funny that way. It's weird - I was just talking to my girlfriend about this like 2 days ago. |

Ha ha ha, I always got the choice roles, COBRA Commander and/or Destro. I could do a halfway decent Chris Latta and Arthur Burghardt.

we played guns as much as we did actual joes. but we didnt play as any joe character. instead we played as our own characters who joined GI Joe and we fought against and along side of "visions", or joes and cobras who werent there. there was 6 of us so we always had a great time.
