Part of the problem with the later waves of figures (after 1985's wave 4 with Flint, LJ, BBQ, etc.) is that there was a difference of opinion between LH and Hasbro. LH wanted most of the new '85 and beyond characters to be re-outfitted older characters. So, Bazooka would've been Zap, Footloose=Grunt, Airtight or Sci Fi=Flash (read the original Flash's FC, he's a chem/bio/nuke specialist, too). He cited Star Wars as an example of this. Hasbro wanted to churn out new characters, so ultimately Hasbro won out. The O13 do show up from time to time during the Marvel run, but Grand Slam really gets the shaft in terms of his appearances. He gets wounded nearly every time we see him, and he stops showing up after issue 83 or so. Had more characters died or retired earlier on, this wouldn't be a problem. I think LH wanted to keep his core cast under 50, probably closer to 20, including both Joes and Cobras.

I wouldn't change a thing, but can you imagine if the later years were NOT dominated by Snake Eyes? Quote:

At least by the Zartan! storyline (#25) Torpedo has given up on the flippers, but that doesn't stop him grabbing a lunch tray on the "Jane" still wearing his facemask and backpack, nor dropping into the Everglades with said items (well at least the Everglades might have some deeper water ;) )

It was cool to see 'Pedo in BDUs in issue #49. Too bad he disappeared in issue #50.
I wanna make a list of "Replacements" for the O13. Grunt - Footloose Zap - Bazooka (notice Bazook had a mustache? Like Zap in the comics!) Short Fuze - Downtown Flash - Airtight, and Sci-Fi Breaker - Dial Tone Rock n Roll - Repeater, and Rock n Roll v2 Stalker - Beachhead Scarlett - Lady Jaye Snake Eyes - Snake Eyes v2, Snake Eyes v3 Hawk - General Hawk Steeler - Heavy Metal Clutch - Clutch v2, maybe Crankcase, and skidmark (looks similar to Clutch v3) Grand Slam - Sci-Fi (since Flash may have been Airtight AND GSs file card sez he likes Sci Fi and comic books!), Long Range (artillery) Others are: Snow Job - Blizzard Gung Ho - Leatherneck (25th figs make them connect easily) Doc - Lifeline or more accurately, Stretcher Torpedo - Wet Suit Airborne - Hit 'n Run (based on specialty) Tripwire - Lightfoot Ace - Slipstream, then Ghostrider Wild Bill - Lift Ticket Blowtorch - Charbroil Roadblock - Heavy Duty Spirit - ??? Ripcord - Freefall and the Sky Patrol team Mutt & Junkyard - Law & Order Recondo - Muskrat Cutter - Keel Haul or Topside Deep Six - Tracker? lather, rinse, repeat. LMK what you think!!!!

Nice list DD! The OG-13 while being the "first" Joes weren't exactly the most exciting.Sure there were favorites SE,Scarlet, Stalker,Rock'n'Roll Flash but some are just green Army men with better articulation. To me Short Fuze/Hawk ,Grunt/Grand Slam, and Zap were all the same guys;) As the Joe/Cobra team expanded to include other services and specialties the older Joes were phased out to make room. Sucks that a lot the newer characters were not developed more in the comic I think there like 30 or so Joes that made an appearance in the ARAH comic.

I completely agree with you there, I still have troubles picking them apart when I read the comics (not Hawk though). But I suppose that's one effect of all having the same uniform and also quickly being pushed out of the comic to be replaced by the later characters and therefore not really having much character development (ok Grunt had some, but still I think the lack of a distinctive uniform killed him for me)

The lack of a distinctive uniform was his distinctive uniform. ;)

I think a smaller team would have made for a better storyline and character development, but having a larger cast is frankly more realistic for a special operations unit. I do think that more Joes could have died at various points - they had enough cast members that they could afforded to lose a few Joes every year.
OTOH, I don't think focusing on such a small group of core Joes helped the book. |
