so I hope this is ok to post in this section more or less I am trying to get a general census about what people think about buying/selling on ebay, and how you go about it and why you charge for certain things.
Ok so to start this off why I am making this thread I have been dealing with ebay for numerous years and as the time passes on people seems to get more and more ridiculous with their shipping prices, a good example is here resolute trooper | eBay gi joe pursuit of cobra | eBay I mean really $10 for shipping a loose figure?? Really?? at most shipping would be $3 especially if you use a bubble mailer which doesn't cost more than $1.29 to buy and to ship is average $1.70-2 so really why charge so much, just because you to make that little extra?? Also if the shipping is so high why not offer to refund the difference that way everyone will feel happy about it. Personally I try to be as honest with my shipping prices as I can be, and if there is any difference I will refund it. We all know of the scalper term but honestly with all the new joes out and convention figures it makes collecting really hard unless you really want to shell out the money. There is no benefit to being honest and trying to help members out, honestly out of a lot of members I have helped in the past only a few have shined through and helped me back. I only am typing this thread in aggravation because I had purchased a POC Viper off an ebay member and had received it today in the mail only to find the damn thing was crammed into a bubble mailer, the card was all bent, and the bubble on the card was crushed. GI JOE Pursuit Of Cobra poc COBRA VIPER 2011 Version | eBay I freakin payed $7 for shipping when I sure as hell know it only costed him $2 to ship it and pocketed the $5 for himself. It just pisses me off how people can get away with this crap on ebay. Its becoming to the point where I can't or don't want to sell or buy things from ebay anymore because of all the seller fees and how ludicrously expensive everyone's shipping rates are. Share your feelings on this let me know what you think.

A tactic for eBay sellers is to offer the item well below market value but charge more for shipping so they make as much or more on the item
As a buyer searching for a specific item most shoppers sort their list from least expensive so the cheapest item in their search shows on top eBay for the longest time did not have the option to sort by price+shipping and buyers weren't paying attention to the cost of shipping...this has since changed but many sellers still do this as a way of appearing competitive...not ALL sellers are like this but I would gather that the majority are |

What Nictus said. Basically, ebay doesn't charge fees/commission on shipping so the seller gets more money in their pocket.
Also, don't forget 'handling' Shipping may only cost 1 dollar in postage, but my time is valuable!

Being that both ebay and paypal take a fee for closing the auction and accepting payment, some people pad the shipping to cover some of these losses.

Didn't ebay change their policy? I got an email from them saying that they weren't going to charge an insertion fee anymore, but the final value fee they charge will be based on the price of the item + shipping. I'm assuming they are doing this to curb the behavior you guys are discussing, but it sucks because not only does ebay already double-dip thanks to paypal, but the price of shipping keeps going up especially with the USPS.
I try to ship my items for as little as possible, and I can usually ship 1 or 2 figures anywhere in the US for about $2.25 or $2.50, which includes shipping plus the price of the bubble mailer. With bigger items, though, it's tougher because I don't have postal scales, so I guesstimate. Most times, I'm very close to the mark. If I "make" any money from shipping, it's very miniscule, like $0.30 or less. That's certainly not my goal. But with shipping I have taken it in the shorts more than once. Bottom line is, I will try to sell locally or on the tank first before dealing with ebay as a seller again.

Report them.
Excessive shipping and avoidance of EBAY fees are violations of policy. When I see auctions with crazy shipping, I just file a report. More often then not they'll be taken down. |

Share your feelings on this let me know what you think. If it came smashed I would have filed an "item not as described"/damaged complaint and gotten a refund or return. If you don't let the seller know it's not acceptable to send figures in bubble packs to be smashed, he'll just keep doing it. |

It is getting difficult to even make money on ebay for small items. The whole point for selling ebay is to make money. If you sell a somewhat common carded figure, you likely spent at least $8.00 on it. Realistic shipping is about $3.00 in a box. If you sell it for $10.00, then you make $2.00. Except you haven't paid ebay fees. You also haven't paid PayPal fees which pretty much required to sell on ebay. When it is all over, you probably lost money. So when it comes to that, I have no problem with someone charging $5.00 for shipping to cover that gap and make some money. But this is where people abuse it. They charge $10 and still ship it for $2.00 in a padded envelope and a crushed card.
For this reason, I don't bother with low dollar items on ebay anymore. It isn't worth my time to make 1 dollar on a item it takes me 30 mins in total time to sell. (Pictures, listing, pack, ship) Those that do bother, are likely to be screwing you some other way. |

We see alot of these "eBay" posts around here from time to time when it comes to discussing shipping and such.
I always bring the same point up even though I may not agree with the practice. The problem with a site like eBay is that they have shipping listed as "shipping and handling" so the seller can pretty much charge whatever they want to without ebay getting in the way. Most of you know what shipping is and what it should cost, but no one ever seems to mention the word "handling" around here. "Handling" can be any amount that the seller deems neccessary in order to recoupe the money it took to get that item, pack it up, and get it out to you. This can contain packaging materials, gas money as well as paying the seller for their time. That's right I said paying them for their "time" because "time is money" especially to a scalper who's job is actually driving around to all of the stores in order to get these items. If they want to be paid $20 an hour for their services then so be it. Now I don't agree with it all, but it is what it is and the only thing you can do about it is to pass over a particular seller and go to another because complaining about it won't do a damn thing unless eBay decides to change their policies. The only thing I can see them doing is to have automatic shipping rates based on the weight of the package, the shipping service you choose, and your location. That's the only way someone is going to pay exactly what it costs to ship. Even if eBay was able to do that they would still have to remove the word "handling" from the site though.
