The only thing I can see them doing is to have automatic shipping rates based on the weight of the package, the shipping service you choose, and your location. That's the only way someone is going to pay exactly what it costs to ship. Even if eBay was able to do that they would still have to remove the word "handling" from the site though.
I still see people charging 15$ to ship a carded figure (which would be well protected in a standard priority mail USPS box, which the post office will deliver to your door for free and then pick up from your door, also for free.) |

They already do this and it's how I do my shipping usually. I'll pre-box/weigh/measure and plug the info into their calculator. You can add a set extra amount to cover the box/padding/"handling" and then ebay will charge the buyer a variable amount based on their location and what method of shipping is used.
I still see people charging 15$ to ship a carded figure (which would be well protected in a standard priority mail USPS box, which the post office will deliver to your door for free and then pick up from your door, also for free.) This might sound stupid but that "handling" cost can be anything else from gas money spent driving from store to store trying to find those items, time spent searching as well as waiting on line for the items, a storage or stocking fee (even if it's their home), the time spent listing the auction and packing the item. That is all part of handling and if you own your own business this would be part of your "paycheck." Like I said before I don't agree with the practice, but there is nothing illegal about it. Sure we know people are trying to pull one over on eBay by trying to get out of paying their fees, but until they change their policies and remove the word "handling" from their site then I don't know what else to tell people than to find another seller with the same item. I have never sold anything on eBay though, but I know what it's like to run your own business and I'm familiar with what you can base a "handling" fee on. By the way just for kicks what's the difference if one seller has a Joe figure in a "Buy It Now" auction for $8.00 plus Free Shipping and another seller has it for $0.01 with $7.99 Shipping. Sure one seller is trying to get out of paying more on ebay fees, but they are both $8.00 in the end. Is someone still going to complain that it doesn't cost $7.99 to ship a single figure? I don't see anyone complaining that it's not FREE to ship a figure either.

I have a scale at home and I charge the exact amount of shipping. There is one seller I've found that sells lots of figures that wouls cost $10 to ships and he charges $75 or more to get under the ebay fees! I've turned him in, because the stuff he sells isn't worth that much and it's illegal per ebay to overcharge for shipping. A few bucks over, no big deal, but $60+ over is out of line.
I'd be upset in your case too, if it's a carded figure, should of been packed to protect it! I've chewed out sellers for mis-packing items I've won. |

If you thought shipping was too high why did you buy it?

Another thing that buyers get screwed on is insurance!! Don't pay for insurance if you're a buyer, it protects the seller, but I see sellers all the time offering for the buyer to pay for it!! LOL
If you don't receive your item, just open a claim and you'll get your money back and the seller will lose out! I know from experience. I sold a Rattler to a guy in Isreal and he claimed he didn't get it (even though the D# stated it made it there) and they took $85 out of my account for me to never see again! I was out the money I paid for the Rattler and shipping cost. I called ebay and the post office and both said I was SOL cause I didn't insure it. I've also been a buyer and bought a lot for $300 and got shorted 2 items filed a claim and they took the $300 right out of the sellers bank account until he shipped me the remaining items. So Do Not pay for the insurance if you're the BUYER. |

Don't like it or agree with it? Then don't buy it. Then sellers will get the message and lower their rates. Simple as the law of supply and demand.

Don't use insurance if you think it will protect you from damage. It won't. The shipping service will always claim you didn't pack it well enough and deny the claim. It might help if it gets lost, but even then they will screw you.
