No.
Because, sadly, this will fade soon. By the time Hasbro could do anything to take advantage, the fever would have passed.

Patriotism at its highest? Really? The hangover has already started. People are already pointing fingers, trying to monopolize the political capital, or worried that we'll be hit by another huge attack.
IMO the best way to sell G.I.Joe in 2011 would be one of the two: De-emphasize the archaic super patriotic element, maybe really push the franchise as an international military unit ("covert ops unit", rather than "antiterrorism unit"). The last movie got off to a very shaky start along this vein, in part because it wasn't recognisably G.I.Joe. I would push it with a really good video game - aiming at an internatonal market of kids, teens, and young at heart adults. OR Acknowledge that the world we live in is a confusing place, and difference between goodies and baddies is ultimately subjective in most cases. Create a dark story of shades of gray to sell to an older audience through a TV show. This could maintain the US centric element - but sell it in a way that is a little more sophisticated and less jingoistic- think Battlestar Galactica style. IDW's Cobra series got off to a great start along this vein. This is what I'd love to see more of. Of course, by not selling to kids, you lose out on the action figure market. I just don't know if G.I.Joe has to be an action figure focused franchise. |

I think you're forgetting the entire reason we don't have 'terrorism' in official GI Joe lore these days. It's for the same reason we have this sudden burst of 'patriotism': September 11th.
Hasbro does not want to use 'terrorism' within GI Joe because it turns people off. We know what Cobra was, but in an official capacity they're not. You'll likely never hear that term again in any creative product (geared towards children) by Hasbro. Tom

Know how I know this? Because you posted a declassified flyer which was meant for fun as a NEWS ITEM. No one would ever tell you anything because the VERY FIRST THING you would do is post it here. Probably incorrectly. |
