I've always wondered if there is a real life version of Barbecue's helmet or what it is based off of. While I was doing research for my custom Barbecue fire engine I ran across these.
Why don't we copy the French Fire Helmet Designs? - Firefighter Nation - Firefighter Social Network, Training & News Does anyone know if there is another helmet that more closely resembles Barbecue's helmet or know what the inspiration is? Last edited by TK1945; 05-01-2011 at 11:13 AM.. |

Thats kinda cool looking. I may try and customize an already existing helmet to make one of those.

It's too new to have served as an inspiration for Barbecue's design (and it's an auto-darkening welder's helmet, not a firefighter's helmet), but the similarity in appearance is so uncanny, you can probably use one to make a Barbecue Halloween/cosplay costume and people would think it was a custom-made prop. As far as actual firefighter helmets go, the only one I can think of that remotely looks like Barbecue's helmet is this one made by ADC International (that comes as part of a Lightweight Fire Approach ensemble): |

Of course, it's entirely possible that it wasn't really based on a real world analogue, and it was just a design that Ron Rudat (the lead GI Joe toy designer during the 1980s) made up. Or it could have been based on a military prototype that never saw the light of day (Rudat and other GI Joe toy designers would sometimes be given tours at the US Army Natick Soldier Center, where the military developed prototypes of equipment, and he said that more than a few prototypes he saw there inspired GI Joe designs).
