Just like with CDs/DVDs/Games, toys get pre-ordered and there are more put on the shelves that aren't in those pre-orders (a lot more) which would be the stuff that shows up at retail. Reselling has nothing to do with pre-ordering.

which is exactly why they can't just crank out a billion shock troopers and hope we buy them somewhere. the fact that production is where the real cost of action figures comes from means they have to be more cautious/careful w/ how many they produce. w/ video games it is in their best interest to make a ton of copies inexpensively and hope they sell, they've already made the big investment w/ development.

I agree, getting a deal and selling at cost I have no problem with.....but I think people complain to stores when a certain item is always sold out first day. I must have a bunch of jobless people in my area because I have problems in all areas.

if they sell 100000 at $20 thats $2,000,000 and I may not know how much it takes to produce, manufacture, market and distribute a game but that seems like a decent number. profitable maybe not, maybe a little... but even if a game bombs there will be several thousand that get sold on or shortly after release date just cuz of the marketing... |

What's reselling got to do with pre-orders?
Just like with CDs/DVDs/Games, toys get pre-ordered and there are more put on the shelves that aren't in those pre-orders (a lot more) which would be the stuff that shows up at retail. Reselling has nothing to do with pre-ordering. I just do not see people complaining about those "insane DVD scalpers" because they had to pay double the price for Tron Legacy.

But like I asked way back at the beginning. Where's the model?
Explain how what works for DVDs will work for toys.

as a student of economics it's supply and demand.
Video Game A is released on a specific date nationwide with a huge media campaign. Every video store, electronics store and big box retailer has plenty to meet demand. Also think of the price-point. at $50-60 per item that is the absolute MOST that anyone will pay for that item. Why? because the entire supply chain makes money at that point. Much higher and nobody buys, much lower and there is a run on the item and it becomes hard to find. At that point the game becomes worth it to hoard and resell. Now think of the way toys are released. There is a soft release date. They trickle across the country, usually from the west coast in. Here we have a logistics problem. While demand exists nationwide, getting product from the locations that get the product early to other places will require scalpers, resellers, speculators, smugglers or whatever you want to call them. The other word is entrepreneurs. While a the price point may be $4-6, demand may be higher in the midwest or east where product has not arrived yet. Therefore it may be possible to sell the item at $8-10 thus satisfying the demand, at a profit. I know some people here don't like this idea. but this is how most commodities get traded in the real world. |
