We all know I'm pro-reselling and I know that at least 25% of you are scalper haters....so let's not have that fight here...leave that to the other 1000 threads dedicated to beating up that dead horse...I want to discuss something new here.
I wonder how the video games, movie, and music industries have avoided the "scalper" problems, and other industry problems that the toy industry seems to be having. Is it because they? A. Have specific release dates B. Have pre-order capabilities C. Usually have enough product to satisfy the needs of any interested party. D. All of the above. I personally feel that the answer is all of the above and I wonder why the toy/action figure industry has not yet adopted what seems to be a working/proven method for other industries. I think that this would prevent many problems in the toy world: A. Scalping Fights (no matter which side you are on) B. Stores getting "stuck" with product C. Stores not getting enough product D. Collectors not getting what they want E. Kids not getting what they want F. Manufacturers losing money on over production and returns G. Manufacturers losing out on sales due to under production. What other problems could this move solve in the toy industry? What other problems could it cause?

You knew this was coming...Actually I have to agree with all of the above, because at any given time I can get on walmart.com and order any game I can think of plus it ships free to the store.

Couple of other points, you have to compare a video game that cost $50-$60 per unit, how can you mark this up, it is already high enough, to $7.99 marked up to $15.00, plus you can take back figures to target for multiple skews, unlike a video game can not be open and has to match the receipt.

What's the model? I don't see anything outlined.

LOL
Stores take pre-orders, order a bit more than what is pre-ordered...if that sells order more....everyone's happy and there are no excuses.

action figures are a completely separate animal from dvds, video games, or music, so the same rules don't apply.
1- toys cost a lot more to produce, per unit, than these mediums. 2- toys have a MUCH narrower market than music, movies, or video games, making logical, make-everyone-happy product distribution much more difficult. they've been making action figures for a long time, figure if they thought some drastic change in distribution or release or production would help they'd have tried it by now, and if they did already it didn't work. |

apples and oranges......
not the same demand nor is it the same type of sales... when a dvd or cd is releases you can buy it online, retail, rent it, download it. also there isnt a demand for multiples...if band X makes three albums in 2011(unlikely) you will buy each album but not 10 copies to keep, resell, customize, pass to friends on a dedicated club site. also you can buy dvds and cds just about anywhere, hell even gas stations carry dvds and cds now. There is a demand for those items but not where one guy will walk in and buy 45 copies of a dvd so he could resell it on ebay.. |
