Like any other child in the early 80s....I LOVED NINJAS!! So freaking cool....black clothes, masks, swords, stars.....what's not to love?
But I was perplexed and amazed when I first saw Storm Shadow in 84....what the heck is a ninja doing wearing WHITE?? And he's a BAD GUY too...bad guys aren't supposed to wear white? But that very contradiction is exactly what made him SO FREAKING COOL. He was already cool for being a ninja...but defying authority by wearing white? Now he's the coolest ninja EVER. I've often wondered if any Joe historians know the secret origins of the character, at least from a design standpoint. I believe Larry Hama said in an interview that he thought it was silly when he first saw it....the sneaky, stealthy guy wearing all white tends to stand out. So I guess that means it was NOT his decision to color him that way....I don't think Larry had that kind of input on the creative process...he was strictly a character/filecard guy. He did say he was reminded of an old ninja or kung fu movie where the hero was a leper, held together by white bandages covering him heard to toe, but I don't think it was an actual INFLUENCE on the character. The only other info I ever heard or saw was that Russ Heath did the character model for Sunbow. Was this before or after the figure was designed? I would love to know. I think it'd be great to finally have an answer all these years later as to who actually came up with such an iconic design. I mentioned in another thread that I am thrilled about the upcoming figure cause it looks like it can be almost a "real-world" take on Stormy. (as long as the ugly Renegades head isn't on the figure!) Someone sniped that a "real" ninja would never wear white. Yeah yeah, cause Joe is so "realistic!" We know that REAL ninjas didn't even wear the costume we all know and love today...they usually wore farmer's or peasant's clothes....that's not the point. The way I always justify the white outfit in my head is Tommy's hubris. He always thought he was the best and was always trying to prove it to his uncle. Especially when Larry writes him, he comes off as very cocky and arrogant. I figure it's in his nature to try to prove to the world that he is SOOOO good....so incredibly skilled and gifted...that he can be the most "invisible" guy in the world while wearing a blazing white outfit. He's handicapping himself to show off, as if to say "I'm gonna sneak up on my enemies wearing this WHITE outfit, which may as well be a target painted on my chest, and they're STILL not gonna see me....nobody is gonna see me...I'll be in and out without a trace, as if I were never there....THAT'S how damn good I am!" What do you guys think? |

I suspect it was more a choice to set up a contrast between him and the all black wearing Snake-eyes. Probably someone at hasbro was also patting himself on the back for switching the "good guys wear white" sterotype.

Because Snake Eyes was already released and he wore black.
The characters are arch enemies. The color choices just reflect that.

Well that one has been explained many times over the years...to save money on paint apps during the initial wave of figures.
I don't think I've ever heard an actual reason for Stormy...but I suppose the fact that Snake Eyes was already established as wearing black may be the reason. Good theory! |

SS wears all white because he's a badass and the only ninja that wants to be seen so that he can fight with them. None of this sneaking around stuff for him.
