I guess they went with #14 for Big Lob because of the precedent already established by Bazooka's jersey. As for why Bazooka wears #14, I have no idea. Back in the 1980s though, when Bazooka was introduced, in the NFL, the number 14 was in the range of jersey numbers (1-19) that could only be worn by quarterbacks, kickers, and punters, so maybe it was a clue as to what position Bazooka played.
In all likelihood though, the explanation is probably more mundane, such as it being the designer's favourite number or something. Somebody should ask original ARAH designer Ron Rudat about that. |

Bazooka wears 14 because 13 is unlucky. He's afraid if he wears 13 he might get hurt or killed. Repeatedly.

this is 1 reason i found through wikipedia. but i dont know if its true or coincidence
"Bazooka's paint is good, but it's disappointing that his big "14" had to be split over a joint. Unless you keep him hunched over slightly, a big red gap runs right through the middle of his shirt. The jersey, by the way, belongs to Steve Grogan, quarterback for the New England Patriots from 1975-1990. Why's a guy from Minnesota like the Pats? Maybe his folks were originally from New England. Amusingly, when Bazooka joined Tiger Force, his jersey was done in Dolphins' colors." |

Since Hasbro is in the New England area, the Steve Grogan angle works.

And Ron Rudat is a big New England Patriots fan.
Thank god they never made a figure with a Tom "Marsha" Brady jersey. |

That's actually pretty cool; I never knew any of that before. And for SOME REASON, I had always been under the impression (I heard it somewhere or read it somewhere) that Bazooka's jersey was "supposed to be" a hockey jersey (because he's from Minnesota), but I never understood any any hockey jersey would ever be depicted in short sleeves.
