Cobras in the Dark City Part 2
While Beachhead worked to contain the chaos from the chemical plant battle, Stalker’s team began their approach on the munitions factory. Being the factory produced items that would be highly desired by the criminal element, there was a robust armed security force that guarded the factory 24/7. The odd thing though was that there was no sign of them. There also was no sign of any forced entry along the security fence. It did not seem logical that the Joes had made it to the factory ahead of the Cobra troopers. Maybe the intelligence concerning this location being a target was wrong. The Joes began moving forward when Snake Eyes suddenly stopped. He took out his sword and made a wide sweeping gesture at the grass in front of them. As the foursome moved closer they could see the bodies of the security force laid out in various places. Stalker bent down by one of them and saw that his throat had been cut. Tripwire went to another guard and saw that he had an arrow dead center in his heart. Rumbler saw a guard face down and planned to turn him over when Tripwire urgently motioned to him to stop. Tripwire looked at the body and saw that it appeared to be on top of something. This body was booby trapped. Tripwire could not afford to conduct a controlled explosion of the item without giving them all away, so he took a long stick and marked the location of the body. Stalker turned to Snake Eyes and asked, “Is this what I think it is?” Snake Eyes nodded his head and used sign language to convey additional information. Since Snake Eyes had become mute years ago, he had learned sign language, and a number of his close teammates had also undertaken the study of the language to communicate with him more efficiently. “Ninjas.” Stalker quietly intoned. Snake Eyes further communicated that based on their method of killing and their weapon choices that these were likely Cobra Ninja Vipers, Cobras own corps of silent killers, designated by their green gis (uniforms). Snake Eyes pointed to the booby trap and signed again. “And Night Creepers” Stalker added. This clan were ninja mercenaries for hire, and they were often employed by Cobra. The Night Creepers were well versed in traditional ninja weapons, but also used modern firearms and explosives in their repertoire. “Ok crew,” Stalker stated. “These guys are no slouches, but we have prevailed against them before, and we need to do so again. I hate to use clichés, but failure is not an option.” The Joes quietly entered the factory through a first floor window. The majority of the lights were off but there were enough small ceiling lights to give the place a dim, eerie glow mixed with large areas of shadow. Suddenly a voice hissed, “Did you really think that it would be this easy?” In conjunction with that statement numerous padded feet alighted on the floor and the Joes were surrounded on three sides by the two ninja factions. “Face it Joes, it’s end game for you.” As the two sides were poised to attack, a loud, maniacal laugh reverberated throughout the factory, bouncing off the ceiling and engulfing the antagonistic parties. A number of these hardened combatants physically shuddered at the sound. A high pitched chaotic voice cried out, ”Ninjas? Seriously? This is like a bad 1980’s movie. Let me guess. You are going to destroy everybody with the super secret platypus technique known only to the deadliest Asian masters. Oh, you guys are absolutely killing me.” Not used to be mocked, the rattled Ninja Creeper Leader gave in to anger and shouted out, “Where are you, you cackling hyena? Show yourself.” “Me?” the voice answered with feigned humility. “I am just a friendly native of this fine city, and I just want to show our out of town guests a rip roaring good time.” Almost forgetting the Joes standing in front of him, the ninja yelled, “I will personally gut you.” “Well, that’s just rude,” the voice stated as if deeply hurt. “Boys, I think it’s time to roll up the welcome mat.” With that a large group of men appeared wearing Halloween masks and began firing automatic weapons at all the assembled parties, completely disregarding the fact that they were all in a giant munitions factory. Complete and utter chaos ensued. The Cobras attacked the Joes, who fought back. Both groups also engaged the marauding masked men, who seemed bent on shooting anything that moved. Stalker, Rumbler, and Tripwire all obtained suitable cover and fired precise, targeted rounds, just as they trained to do. Snake Eyes leapt into the thick of the battle meting out death with his Uzi and katana as if he was the living embodiment of the grim reaper. Rumbler was firing with his M16 rifle when an arrow embedded in his shoulder causing him to drop his weapon. He instantly transitioned one handed to his pistol, but a kick to his back sent him sprawling on the ground. A ninja was about to sever Rumbler’s head with his sword, but Stalker, who was well versed in knife fighting long before he joined the military, grabbed the ninja from behind and buried his blade to the hilt in the ninja’s back causing him to stiffen then collapse. Tripwire, who was as cool under fire as he was when working with explosives, had fired his weapon until it had run dry. He was looking around for another magazine to reload when he saw one of the Halloween crew run with what looked like an improvised explosive. The man was heading towards a large pallet of boxed .50 caliber rounds. If this guy set off that bomb on top of that pallet those rounds would ignite and shoot out indiscriminately shredding everybody in their path. Self-preservation was obviously not a core value for this group. Tripwire raced forward ignoring the bullets, arrows, and other projectiles flying all around him, and tackled the large man. The man dropped the device, but was then able to get on top of Tripwire and start strangling him. Tripwire tried dislodging the man’s grip but was unsuccessful. As he felt himself blacking out, he took one hand off the man’s wrist, unsnapped the chin strap of his own helmet, and swung the helmet with all the force he could muster smashing it into the side of his assailant’s head knocking him out cold. Tripwire coughed and struggled to get his breath back. He turned onto his stomach satisfied that he had just prevented a disaster. His satisfaction was short lived, however, as he watched in horror as another member of the Halloween sect shouldered what looked like an RPG. If he fired that rocket the whole building might go up. Tripwire was too far away to do anything, but just as Armageddon was about to be unleashed, the wall behind the thug exploded inward sending the man flying across the room. In the resulting hole a large, black, sleek, armored vehicle entered and then came to a thundering halt. The vehicle’s canopy slid backwards, and a large dark clad figure was propelled upwards and out from the vehicle. For an instant he seemed to fly above the heads of the combatants as if he had wings and then he landed in a crouch in the middle of the melee. He unfolded his tall body to its full height and then he went to work. The dark fighter snatched a rifle from one of the Halloween thugs and shoved the butt stock up and back striking the man under the chin and lifting him off the ground. This individual was out long before his body hit the floor. A Ninja Viper faced off with the fighter swinging the bladed end of a ninja kusarigama in a swift figure eight pattern. He let the blade fly towards his opponent while still holding on to the attached chain. The fighter caught the bladed weapon in the air and immediately thrust it into the thigh of an attacking Night Creeper sending him to the floor howling in pain. Then the fighter looped the chain around the neck of the Ninja Viper and jerked him forward where his face impacted with the fighter’s raised elbow. The fighter then took an electronic device hanging from his belt and aimed it at a thug firing wildly with an automatic rifle. The fighter deployed the device and the prongs stuck in the thug’s body instantly locking him up. Unlike in TV and movies, actual law enforcement Tasers die not knock a person unconscious, however this unique device actually accomplished that task. A Night Creeper took aim at the fighter with a modern high powered crossbow with a scope. Before the ninja could release his bolt, he yelped in pain and dropped the weapon. He raised his forearm and stared at three small sharp edged objects embedded in the limb. As he turned to look at his attacker the heel of a boot hit him in the torso sending him careening backwards and out of the fight. The fighter then saw a man in strange looking chem/ bio suit and helmet running towards an exit while carrying a long cylindrical metallic container. He started after the man at a rapid pace. As the firefight raged on, there were more Halloween thugs and ninjas prone on the ground than still in the fight, but they still outnumbered the Joes. The Joes, however, would not quit under any circumstances. Rumbler continued to fire his sidearm one handed while his other arm was kept stationary in a hastily fashioned sling. Tripwire had rejoined his teammates and had picked up additional M16 magazines to allow him to lay down a sustained field of fire. Stalker was alternating between his submachine gun and a large Gurkha made kukri knife that he used on any thug or ninja who made it into their defensive perimeter. Whereas his teammates had executed a defensive strategy, Snake Eyes was all offensive. He had exhausted all the ammo in his Uzi and backup pistol and now relied on his katana and other silent weapons. He moved through the enemies like an avenging wraith cutting down skilled ninjas like they were white belts at a kid’s Tae Kwon Do class. For those attempting to take him or his teammates out from across the room with firearms, Snake Eyes used his unerring skill with throwing knives to eliminate them. When his katana became wedged in an impaled Ninja Viper’s rib cage and spine, Snake Eyes resorted to unarmed techniques, which were almost as lethal as his armed attacks. Flowing effortlessly from his commando combatives to more esoteric Arashikage ninja skills, Snake Eyes dropped numerous armed attackers with powerful hand and foot attacks, while utilizing incredible acrobatic maneuvers to avoid getting hit by bullets or blades. After snake Eyes had dispatched all the enemies in his immediate vicinity, he caught movement out of the corner of his eye. It was a Toxoviper in his Cobra issued suit running with the metal container that undoubtedly housed the deadly virus. Snake Eyes dislodged his katana from the dead Ninja Viper and started after the Cobra operative. As Snake Eyes closed in on the Toxoviper he saw a large dark shape in his peripheral vision. Though he could not see the man clearly in the shadows he could tell by the strange lines of his outfit that it must be some new type of Cobra soldier. A Shadow Viper perhaps. In one fluid motion Snake Eyes flung a shuriken (a martial arts throwing star) at this new viper. The man batted the projectile away effortlessly and retaliated by hurling his own odd shaped metallic object at Snake eyes. Snake Eyes deflected the object with his katana. He then turned to face his shadowed opponent. The area inhabited by the two men was almost totally blacked out, but they could sense each other’s movement. Snake Eyes attacked with a sword cut that could cleave a horse in two, but his opponent blocked it with his forearm that was protected by long reinforced gloves. If one could see Snake Eyes’ face it would have registered surprise. His exquisite katana could slice through metal yet it could not penetrate whatever substance lined these gauntlets. He was even more surprised when the katana caught on the scalloped spikes on the gloves. Cobra was really improving its equipment if this was any measure. The shadow man made a quick twisting motion which ripped the katana from Snake Eyes’ hands. Snake Eyes attacked with an open palm strike to his opponent’s solar plexus. Normally this would temporarily paralyze someone, but the shadow man obviously had some sort of high tech armor weave in his suit. The man stumbled back and Snake Eyes pressed his advantage with flying knee attack. The shadow man deftly avoided the attack and threw a spinning back fist at Snake Eyes’ head. Snake Eyes ducked keeping his head safe, but the blow landed on his shoulder. Snake Eyes marveled at the power in that blow as it almost made his arm go numb. Snake Eyes and the shadow man exchanged strikes, blocks, and parries at an amazing pace. No movie fight scene could match the speed at which these two combatants battled. Both men effortlessly switched between numerous martial arts disciplines from Krav Maga to Muay Thai to Greek Pankration, then into the grappling range with judo and sambo, and down to the ground with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and wrestling, then back to stand up western boxing. Snake Eyes was impressed with his opponent’s skill with ninjutsu techniques that should be unknown to outsiders, while the shadow man realized that his opponent’s abilities were light years ahead of the Ninja Vipers and Night Creepers that he had fought this night. Both men were breathing heavily and it soon became apparent that all other sounds of battle had ceased. The Halloween thugs and Cobra ninja groups had all been neutralized by the Joes or each other. Stalker had brought out a flashlight and shined it on the two combatants. First he identified Snake Eyes and then he shined it on the other fighter. When the beam reached the man’s chest Tripwire exclaimed, “No way.” There in view of everyone was the symbol of a black bat. Stalker raised the light to the man’s head and the long eared, white eyed bat cowl became visible. Rumbler found a light switch which added some much needed light to the environment. There in front of the Joes was a large muscular man with a long, black, scalloped cape. Stalker stared at him and stated, “You’re supposed to be an urban legend.” “The Batman”, Tripwire exclaimed in his best excited fan boy voice. “Obviously you are not with these other guys,“ Stalker stated motioning to the all the laid out antagonists, including the thugs who were actually wearing clown masks. “And neither are we” he added. “We are…” “Special Counter-terrorist Group Delta, code named Gi Joe” Batman answered for him in his deep voice. “That’s classified. How do you know…” Stalker started to say. “I make it my business to know all clandestine groups operating in the US, and elsewhere.” Batman answered for him. “I saw other members of your group at the chemical plant. They defeated their Cobra adversaries.” Snake Eyes interrupted with a flurry of sign language motions, which Batman answered in like manner. “The Toxoviper”, Tripwire said in barely disguised panic. “He may have escaped with the virus.” “He went out that door,” Batman flatly stated. The Joes followed him outside and they had only gone a few feet when they all stopped. “I guess he didn’t escape.” Rumbler stated. In front of them lay the Toxoviper. His helmet was off and his exposed face was deadly pale and his lips had pulled back in a hideous rictus grin. Protruding from the man’s chest was a long thin spike with a small flag attached to it that spelled out in large letters, “BANG”. The canister, which actually did contain the weaponized virus, was nowhere to be found. Batman immediately knew who was in possession of the canister and also knew that it was now in the hands of someone even more dangerous than Cobra. As Batman and the Joe team stared down at the corpse, a bright beam of light lit up the sky displaying the awe inspiring Bat Signal. “Welcome to Gotham gentlemen,” Batman stated emotionlessly. “We have a busy night ahead of us.” |

I didn't get it till the revelation of the bat on chest armor; and yet, all clues were there; you hinted everything. Congratulations! You're magnificent!!
have you thought uploading all the story in the same thread? you just have to divide in several postings |

Thanks for the kind words. I was hoping that I could keep people guessing as to the identity of the crossover character.
I split it into 2 threads because it was too long to fit in initial posting, but I probably could have just finished the story by putting it in a second post on the same thread. I just wasn't thinking. Started writing the conclusion to the story, but it may take awhile to complete. |
