Cobras in the Dark City
The two jeep like vehicles were moving at a high rate of speed, first passing through rural areas, then the suburbs, and finally coming close enough to the city to see the looming buildings come into view. Though there were lights on in the majority of the buildings, the darkness still seemed to permeate throughout the city. Impressive but by no means beautiful, the buildings appeared more like harbingers of dread than welcoming beacons. Each of the vehicles had a driver and three passengers. The driver of the first vehicle was a dark haired man with a beard. He was dressed in tan military fatigues with a similarly colored helmet. He bore an expression of determination mixed with satisfaction like an Indy 500 racer passing his opponents. “Hey Clutch,” the passenger in the bucket seat next to the driver yelled out over the roar of the engine. “I know we have to move quickly, but winding up in a flaming mound of molten metal won’t really help us achieve our mission.” “Well Airtight. If you want, I can drop you off at the nearest bus stop, or maybe you can call an Uber,” Clutch shot back. Airtight was the chemical and biological weapons expert for Gi Joe, the elite military anti-terrorist team. A consummate professional, Airtight was meticulous in his field work. He was well respected by his teammates, but considered a bit strange all the same. He was wearing his chem/bio suit and was prepared to wade into a hazardous environment within a moment’s notice “Just get us there alive, speed freak,” snarled a voice from one of the vehicle’s rear seats. Despite his wearing a balaclava that covered most of his face, the man’s voice came through clearly. The rest of the man’s outfit consisted of camo BDUs, a black flack vest, and various firearms and knives. “Listen Beachhead, I don’t tell you how to squat in the jungle for hours at a time, so don’t you tell me how to drive.” Clutch was able to carry on this conversation as easily as if he was sitting in a rocking chair slipping lemonade and not taking turns around corners on two wheels. “You have violated every traffic law ever written and are probably going double the speed limit,” stated Shockwave who was sitting next to Beachhead. This individual also wore a balaclava over his face, but whereas Beachhead wore military colors, Shockwave wore blue camo BDUs and a blue cap, common to law enforcement SWAT teams. Well versed in urban operations, Shockwave was one of the few law enforcement operators fully embraced by the Gi Joe unit. The team members knew that he could handle anything thrown at them. Clutch’s only response to Shockwave was a short one liner, “So write me a ticket.” Over in the other vehicle the driver was pushing his machine to the limit, as he was not going to let Clutch have bragging rights on this mission. This individual sported sandy brown hair and a mustache and a laser focused expression on his face. “Rumbler, just because Clutch wants to end up street pizza, doesn’t mean we have to join him,” a firm measured voice stated from one of the rear seats. The voice came from an African American soldier dressed in green tiger stripe camo and wearing a beret. His bearing was one of confidence and command presence. “I second that, Stalker” the occupant in the front passenger seat uttered while firmly grasping the dashboard in front of him. This soldier wore a modified bomb suit with a helmet and visor. Tripwire was the unit’s bomb disposal expert. He was completely composed when working with explosives, but this high speed pursuit had his nerves on edge. The final passenger in this vehicle was dressed from head to toe in black, and sporting a number of weapons, including a long Japanese katana. He said nothing and nonchalantly checked the edge on his spiked knuckle knife. The two hard traveling tactical units were on a mission of the utmost urgency. The worldwide terrorist cabal, Cobra, had weaponized a strain of the rare but rapidly expanding Panbola Virus that had originated in an outlying province in Trucial Abysmia. Whereas most countries were seeking a way to contain the frightening new disease, Cobra sought to use the fear caused by it to threaten the world into acquiescing to Cobra’s demands. Cobra even staged a brazen kidnapping out of a hospital of an infected international traveler. Cobra wanted the world to know that they had acquired the virus and had the capability of releasing this new plague into a city of its choice. Most frighteningly Cobra had succeeded in making the virus transmittable through the air as opposed to direct person to person contact. The Joes had learned through a combination of the work of undercover operative Chuckles and Cobra communications intercepted by computer expert Mainframe that Cobra had actually only been able to produce a small quantity of the weaponized virus. Despite sending out numerous Cobra Toxovipers with canisters supposedly filled with the virus, only one canister held the active virus. The problem was that the Joes had not been able to determine which of the Cobra operatives carried the real threat and they all had a significant head start on the Joes. A number of Joe teams were tracking down the Cobras, and the team led by Stalker was on the trail of one of the Cobra units headed to a major city. This particular city had weathered its share of disease and earth shattering problems in the past, but with Cobra pulling the strings, this threat could be the one from which the city could not recover. As the Joes reached a main thoroughfare of the city, the two Vamp jeeps came to a rolling stop. Stalker talked to everyone in the group, “We know that the two main locations from which Cobra is likely to initiate their threats are the chemical plant and the munitions factory. Airtight, the chemical plant is your target, and Trip, you are on the munitions factory. Keep in contact and don’t let your guard down. This city is dangerous enough even without the virus.” The two Joe teams separated and started traveling to their designated sites. It was believed that Cobra chose these sites because it would keep tactical law enforcement or even the military from staging a large scale assault on those sites for fear of causing large scale loss of life should they be destroyed. In addition to the fact that the Joes had to split their personnel into smaller teams in order to track all the Cobra operatives, their reduced footprint would hopefully allow these teams to accomplish their mission with stealth and not a lot of media attention. Clutch hit the gas and the Vamp started moving again. It was the middle of the night so traffic was relatively light as if most motorists apparently didn’t want to get caught outside in the dark. On the street one could see the denizens of the city scurrying along, meeting briefly, then moving away. Were they drug, prostitution, or weapons transactions? Hard to say, but they definitely appeared to be of an illegal nature. The odd thing was that when these inhabitants of the city heard the rumbling of the Vamp coming, they froze. However, as soon as they saw it was just a military vehicle they noticeably relaxed. Beachhead thought to himself, “What could be more intimidating than a military vehicle carrying heavily armed men that these people actually felt relief when they saw us come by.” Shockwave thought of how a SWAT team would have a target rich environment in this city. Clutch slowed the Vamp down to a crawl as the chemical plant came into view. They were prepared to go in hard if they needed to, but they wanted give as little notice as possible to any Cobra troopers present. They also had to be cognizant of the various dangers present in the plant and knew that any stray rounds or improperly set explosives could rupture a chemical tank and cause major ecological damage and loss of life. The Joe quartet cut through the chain link and barbwire fence surrounding the plant. They then traveled on foot and stopped at a heavy metal door. Though the Joes had a number of bomb experts on the team when it came to bringing down fortified structures and tanks, Shockwave was fully capable of setting up an explosive breach that would take down a door without injury to any possible hostages. He set the explosive charge in a location that would take out the lock and heavy deadbolts, but not send the door flying across the room. Once the charge was set, everyone moved back a safe distance. Shockwave blew the door locks and Beachhead threw a flash bang into the room. The distraction device was non-pyrotechnic reducing the chance of a fire or explosive reaction, but it still emitted a blinding light, smoke and a deafening sound that gave the Joes a second to enter the room before any Cobras could react. As the four men moved right and left of the doorway they saw what they were up against. Close to two dozen Cobras were situated throughout the large warehouse size room. Behind the Cobra personnel were several large sealed vats of unknown chemicals. The Joes would have to place their shots carefully. Since only concrete walls served as the backstop behind the Joes, the enemy had no limitations on where their rounds impacted. The Cobras facing the Joes consisted of more than the standard infantry Vipers armed with rifles. In addition, there was a Frag Viper with his standard arsenal of grenades, a Night Viper with an infrared monocular eye piece that provided an advantage in the dark, a S.A.W. Viper with his large machine gun, an Incinerator with a flame thrower, and an H.E.A.T. Viper with a rocket propelled grenade type weapon. Airtight’s eyes widened at the sight of these men while his brain screamed, “What are these idiots thinking by bringing that type of firepower into a chemical plant, and while they are also carrying a deadly virus?” The Vipers started firing their weapons and the Joes hid behind various solid objects that could provide cover from the rounds coming at them. The Joes fired selectively and several Vipers went down. The H.E.A.T. Viper stepped up to unleash his high explosive round at the Joes. Clutch hit the soldier in the neck with a 5.56 caliber round from his M4 carbine. The Viper went down while grabbing at his neck. The index finger of his other hand reflexively squeezed the trigger on his weapon sending an explosive round out the barrel. The round struck near the top of one wall blowing out a large chunk of concrete and a nearby window in a deafening roar. The blast coming out of the building caught the attention of numerous city dwellers including one in particular. The Frag Viper had let the other Cobra troopers take the lead on the assault, but when he saw that the altercation had not ended as quickly as he anticipated, he decided to also engage the Joes. He took one of his grenades and placed it the launching device attached to his arm. This device was similar to a cesta, the hand held wicker basket used in Jai Alai to propel a rubber ball at amazing speed. As the Frag Viper was doing this, Beachhead realized that putting a round through the Viper would most likely puncture the metal casing of the chemical vat he was backed up against. Instead Beachhead quickly unhooked the crossbow he carried on his pack and notched an arrow in it. While Scarlett was the most adept with crossbow type weapons, Beachhead kept himself in practice with it. Just as the Frag Viper raised his arm to launch the grenade, Beachhead let loose and the bolt flew straight through the eye lens of the Viper’s helmet dropping him instantly. The Joes had done well to whittle down the Cobra opposition, but just as they started feeling that they might actually survive this encounter, the S.A.W. Viper cut loose with his high powered machine gun. The bullets from the weapon tore apart chunks of concrete and punched through metal machinery that the Joes were using as cover. This had the effect of keeping the Joes’ heads down. What was worse than the S.A.W. Viper’s deadly barrage was that the Incinerator had taken this opportunity to get close enough to prepare to engulf the Joes in a massive ball of flame. The Incinerator aimed his flame thrower and was about to pull the trigger when a razor tipped metal object whizzed through the air and severed the hose that carried the napalm like fuel to the flame thrower. The Incinerator pulled the trigger and to his surprise nothing happened. Almost simultaneously a second similarly shaped metal object impacted the S.A.W. Viper’s weapon causing it to immediately cease firing. The Viper looked down at his machine gun and saw that the object had wedged itself in the port where the belt fed ammunition would enter. The Viper attempted to dislodge the object but it would not budge. “What the hell is this thing anyway.” was the thought that ran through his mind. The Night Viper and the remaining infantry Vipers moved forward to attack the Joes, when the lights suddenly went out sending the plant into a stygian darkness. The Night Viper quickly activated his night vision knowing this would give him an immediate advantage. The Joes had not come unprepared and immediately moved to secure and turn on their own night vision. Unfortunately for Airtight he had to remove his chem/bio mask to get a proper fit with the night vision goggles. The Night Viper saw that Airtight was not yet in the fight, and took aim at him. Before he could pull the trigger a gloved fist filled his monocular scope and continued on, smashing into the Viper’s face and sending him reeling to the floor. With their own night vision working, the Joes quickly reengaged the Vipers at close range which turned into a mixture of close in gun fighting, bladed weaponry, and even grappling and strikes. Slipping in and out of their peripheral vision was a dark figure, moving stealthily yet quickly. Wherever he appeared Cobras went sprawling to the ground unconscious. This figure actually appeared to judo throw the muscular S.A.W. Viper half way across the room. Was it Snake Eyes? Who else could move like that? Shockwave ultimately was able to restore the lights. The Joes looked around and saw dead, injured, and unconscious Cobras strewn across the floor. The Joes had definitely taken down their fair share of the enemy, but a surprisingly large number of broken Cobras appeared to have been the work of the unknown combatant. Whoever he was, he was effective and efficient, though he apparently preferred non-lethal techniques. And what was his whole stake in this? Airtight searched around and located the Toxoviper on the floor. He looked as if a fist had smashed through the face shield of his helmet and flattened his nose. Nearby lay a canister. This had to be the container for the virus. Airtight had already put on his helmet with the built in face shield, but the shock on his face was still easily observed when he saw that the canister had been opened. “Get back” Airtight yelled to his teammates. He moved towards the canister and slowly brought out an instrument called a sniffer. It sucked in the air from the canister, and Airtight worriedly looked at his read out. “What’s it say?” Clutch anxiously yelled from across the room. “It’s clean.” Airtight said with a great sigh of relief. “It’s empty… but why is it empty?” “The ways these guys fought, they must have thought it was real,” Shockwave stated as he motioned to the supine Cobras. He then began zip tying the hands of those Cobras still breathing. “That means Stalker’s target must have the real thing,” Beachhead muttered. “We need to get over there.” Just as he said it, a loud engine roared to life, sounding more like an airplane than a car. The vehicle it belonged to sped off sounding like the opening attack of hell’s legions. “Is that our mysterious guest? Did he open the canister? Did he know it was empty, or did he just risk everyone’s lives?” Airtight queried out loud. Clutch bent over and picked up the metal object that severed the flamethrower’s hose. He turned it over and over and stated, “Would you look at this?” Just then a multitude of police and firefighter sirens could be heard coming up the road. “Damn” Beachhead exclaimed. “We’re going to have to deal with this. Shockwave, you speak their language. You keep them from drawing down on us, while I reach out for Hawk. We’ll need political backup on this mess.” (To be continued in part 2) |
