(This a continuation of Dreadnoks Part 1 since my story was too long for one thread)
The distant specks in the sky were now close enough to be identified as Skystrikers, Conquests, Skyhawks, Dragonflys, and a number of other Joe aircraft. As usual Ace spearheaded the fixed wing squadron, while Wild Bill led the rotary team. Tearing up the ground was a phalanx of Mobats, MBT Maulers, Wolverines, Vamps, and Awe Strikers. “Don’t get ahead of me” Steeler yelled from the lead Mobat to Clutch in his Vamp. “Ya gotta keep up“, Clutch replied. “Just make sure you boys give me enough room for a clear shot from my Wolverine.” Cover Girl chimed in. Road Pig was not deterred by the oncoming onslaught. “Why can’t we stay and fight?” he argued. At that moment a loud explosion shook the building and a gaping hole appeared in the wall. Some distance away the Joe mortar soldier Short Fuze congratulated Long Range for his on the money shot with the Gi Joe artillery canon, the Thunder Clap. “That’s one reason”, Zartan shouted, and Road Pig reluctantly agreed. Being that the Joes had come in on the flanks of the battling armies, they quickly got the better of the other combatants. The opposing aircraft such as Fangs, Rattlers, Mambas, and even one of Destro’s Dominator copters all began falling out of the sky. Voltar apprised Destro of the losses his troops were suffering and Destro gave the order to disengage. Destro well knew the ancient Chinese military tactician Sun Tzu’s advice not to engage in a battle that you cannot win, and he was not going to lose good men in a vain attempt to secure a weapon that his own weapon designers might be able to replicate one day. The Demons laid down suppressive fire and the Iron Grenadiers departed with their wounded and deceased. Destro would see to it that the injured men would get the finest medical care, and that the bodies of the deceased would be flown to Scotland, to be buried with honors. The families of the slain would receive generous compensation for the sacrifices of their loved ones. The Cobra troopers and Red Shadows did not have the same benefactor looking out for their welfare. The Red Laser abandoned the Robo Skull when it could no longer deliver effective hits on the enemy. He then grabbed a jeep, helped the Black Major into it, and escaped the conflict, leaving the other Red Shadows behind. Soon after they surrendered to the Joes. The Cobra vlpers were also quickly defeated after Bludd fled with the prized weapon. Bludd knew that Cobra Commander would not be pleased about the loss of so many vehicles and aircraft. The loss of the Cobra troopers were less of a concern. They were cannon fodder, and there was always disgruntled men willing to join Cobra’s ranks for their shot at hitting back at the system they felt failed them. Bludd also knew that all would be forgiven if he placed the weapon in Cobra Commander’s hands. What Bludd didn’t know was that the tracking device installed in the weapon was still functioning. Just as Bludd felt confident that he had made good his escape, several loud shotgun blasts were heard and a number of 12 ounce lead slugs punched through the grill of the vehicle he was driving. The slugs severed various hoses, engine parts, and the radiator, bringing the vehicle to a slow stop. Bludd looked around and saw Flint with a shotgun in his hands and a lopsided grin on his face. Bludd started to draw his pistol when he felt a cold barrel press against the back of his head, and heard Duke’s commanding voice, “Don’t try it unless you want this to be a good day to die for you.” Bludd , knowing survival was the main goal of any military engagement, dropped the pistol and raised his hands. He would err on the side of living to escape and fight another day. Back at the compound the Dreadnoks were scrambling to get out of Dodge. Unfortunately, the Joes had planned for this eventuality. Tripwire, Lightfoot, and Tunnel Rat had planted breaching charges at the various entranceways and blew- all the doors in. Numerous flash bang grenades were thrown into the rooms to stun those inside, and this gave the Joes the time they need to effect multiple entries. Among the Dreadnoks were a number of initiates who had not yet become full-fledged members of the gang. Some of them decided that they could elevate their status by fighting the Joes. Those who did it unarmed soon found themselves face down, secured with law enforcement zip ties, and sporting a number of contusions and broken bones. Those who opposed the Joes with deadly force were met with an armed response, and many of them now lie flat on their backs, with their weapons by their side. They had forced the confrontation and therefore would never make the journey to being made members. Most of the established members knew when they were beat, because this wasn’t a rival biker or criminal gang they faced. No, this was Gi Joe, comprised of the most talented members of the armed forces. Rather than suffering permanent injury precluding their ability to ride in the future they begrudgingly surrendered. A few Dreadnoks went down the hard way. Road Pig was not one to succumb so easily. He physically pulled Grunt and Zap off their feet and hurled them across the floor. He then raised his cinder block mace, but as he was about to bring it down a large hand grabbed it from behind and stopped its momentum. Road Pig turned and stared into the face of one of the few Joes big enough to look him straight in the eye, Roadblock. Roadblock had pulled back his fist and let it fly straight into Road Pig’s nose smashing it across his face and sending him crashing to the ground. During all the confusion, Zarana and Zandar had made their way through a dark tunnel that ran underneath the compound and came out to a cellar type door that was flush to the ground and hidden by some dirt mounds and scrub brush. They climbed out of the dark tunnel and shielded their eyes from the sun. Once they were able to see clearly they turned around and stopped dead in their tracks. Zandar muttered in a low tone, “Oh, dear Lord.”, for standing in front of them were two figures, one an attractive redhead with a crossbow and the other wearing all black and armed with numerous weapons including a sword. The twins immediately recognized them for who they were, Scarlett and Snake Eyes, two of the longest serving and deadliest of the Joes. Zarana snarled and threw herself at Scarlett unleashing a flurry of strikes at her. Scarlett had put aside the crossbow and stepped offline parrying all of Zarana’s attacks. As good a fighter as Zarana was, Scarlett had trained in numerous martial arts since childhood, and this was before she started training special ninja techniques with her teammate and lover, Snake Eyes. Zarana threw a low roundhouse kick which Scarlett stopped with a Thai boxing shin block. That caused Zarana to hobble a bit, but she renewed her attack with a vicious looping punch. Scarlett stepped inside the blow letting it sail harmlessly behind her head. She then executed an upward elbow strike against the underside of Zarana’s jaw. Zarana’s head flipped up and she stumbled backwards. Zarana would not give up and tried to move forward which put her in a perfect position for Scarlett to perform a perfect spinning back kick which caught Zarana in the solar plexus knocking the wind out of her and dropping her to her knees. Game as she was, Zarana was unable to prevent Scarlett from pinning her arms behind her back and securing her wrists with heavy duty zip ties. At the same time that Zarana had battled Scarlett, Zandar had to face off against Snake Eyes. He was under no illusion that he could defeat the deadly ninja commando in hand to hand combat. Fortunately, unlike his sister, he was able to grab a couple of weapons before he entered into the tunnel. He raised a pistol towards Snake Eyes, but before he could pull the trigger, he yelled in pain and dropped the weapon. He looked at his hand and saw blood streaming from a throwing star that was embedded in it. Zandar yanked the star from his hand. Then used his undamaged hand to draw a large heavy bladed Bowie knife from his waistband. He viciously swung at Snake Eyes’s head. The weapon would have sliced through the ninja’s neck had it landed, but Snake Eyes reared back just enough to let the blade whistle past cutting only empty air. Zandar then attempted a backhand slash, but Snake Eyes blocked it at the wrist, which he then grabbed. He then drove the palm of his other hand upwards impacting Zandar’s elbow and dislocating it. Zandar dropped the knife and with no other option, threw a desperate kick. Snake Eyes slipped past it and performed a two finger strike to the notch between Zandar’s neck and collarbone gagging him and causing him to go limp. Snake Eyes then secured Zandar in the same fashion as Zarana. Snake Eyes and Scarlett marched the siblings back to where the rest of the prisoners were being loaded into trucks. “Hey Zarana” a voice called out. “Do you remember me?” Zarana looked over and spat. “Yeah, you’re that Gi Joe cow, Lady Jaye.” “I’m also your good friend Donna Marina”, and with that Lady Jaye held up the wig she used in her biker chic role. “You’re not the only one who can do the undercover change of appearance trick. Oh, and let me introduce you to my soldier boyfriend, Chuckles.” Chuckles stepped forward still wearing his trademark Hawaiian shirt. “We set the whole operation up.” Chuckles said. “We had intel that the Devil’s Due gang had stockpiled some serious weaponry and had contracted to conduct assassinations on behalf of a surviving member of First Strike, the deceased Vance Wingfield’s old paramilitary organization. So Lady Jaye in her biker persona made the acquaintance of a couple of the Devil’s Due gang members and eventually got them onboard with the drug den hits. We created the dens using drugs that Bullet Proof and the Drug Elimination Force had seized when they took down the Headman and his Headhunters. Of course we had Lady Jaye sell it back to us and we paid in marked bills that could be traced. In addition, when the gangs went out to do their rips we went into their club houses and altered their weapons so that they would be unsuccessful if they attempted any of the assassinations before we rounded the gang up. We then decided to take them down. Lady Jaye continued the story. “Working with the bikers built my street cred and I moved into setting up illegal arms merchants. We took several down and then we created the faux revolutionary weapon as a lure. When the infamous Dreadnok twins came calling, we knew we might land some big fish. Of course we didn’t expect such a big payday, so thanks for your invaluable assistance.” “Screw you bitch!” Zarana hissed. “You won’t hold me forever, and when I get out, I am coming for you.” “By the time you get out, you will need to search for us at retirement villages. Enjoy prison.” Lady Jaye retorted with a broad smile on her face. Zarana then whispered to Zandar in an authoritative tone, “Listen to me. Don’t tell them anything. Give them nothing.” “I’m not going to tell them anything” Zandar winced, still feeling the pain of his elbow. “But I told you before that your being born two minutes ahead of me, does not make you my boss.” “Maybe not, but I do know that you can kiss that grape soda you were promised from that handsome stranger goodbye.” “I don’t care.” Zander insisted. “Knowing that he chose me over you, will keep me smiling for a long time.” he two continued bickering as they were loaded into the truck. Some twins support each other and some just engage in sibling rivalry. Back at the ransacked Dreadnok compound, Hawk strode into the center of the room. Everyone snapped to attention. One thing Hawk had was command presence and everyone respected it. Ok Stalker, give me the run down,” Hawk asked of another one of his longest serving and most accomplished soldiers. Stalker responded, “The Iron Grenadiers were smart and departed before we could contain the scene, but they lost a lot of expensive equipment, which should set Destro back for a little while. We captured the majority of the Red Shadows, Cobras, and Dreadnoks. Flint and Duke got Bludd and our nonfunctioning weapon back. The Black Major and Red Laser made a run for it, but Beachhead and Gung Ho intercepted them with an Awe Striker. The major player we could not account for was Zartan.” “He’s a damn slippery one.” Hawk responded. “Still he can’t do much without his gang, so for the moment he’s neutralized. Overall an excellent job men. Let’s get the site turned over to the Army and head home. Breaker get the word out to everone. ” “Yo Joe” every Joe yelled and saluted. They then filed out of the former headquarters of the Dreadnoks. Once everyone had been gone for a while, Zartan stepped out from a darkened alcove. As usual his chameleon like abilities had served him well when everything else failed. This was a historic loss for the Dreadnoks, No other way to look at it. But Zartan was nothing if not resilient. He knew that over time he would be able to liberate a large percentage of his crew. When you can pose as a prison guard, cook, or even a warden, you had ways of accomplishing things, Still Zartan was not in a rush to free his younger siblings. Their missteps had led to this catastrophe. He would eventually free them, but first he might take some time for himself. Maybe he would practice some active meditation by trying to create a sword like he had in Japan all those years ago. Of course that would take time, and he would probably have to start over from scratch several times. Despite the day’s disastrous events, Zartan did not expect the Joes, Cobra, or Destro’s organization to disappear any time soon, and if they were going to keep battling it out, there is no way the Dreadnoks would be left out of the game. In fact, what good is a game if you don’t have any hell raisers in it? The End. |

I really liked this story! Though, I do prefer a Zarana & Zandar who support each other. Hope that doesn't hurt your feelings.

Nope. Doesn't bother me at all. I just went the way I did because I always saw Zarana as someone difficult to get along with by almost anybody. I give you credit for giving me the idea to start writing about those characters in the first place. Glad you enjoyed it.

I asked for some constructive criticism and did receive some in a PM. The main points were if I were to try and adapt my story to a comic book or some other medium I would need to explain the various characters that I took for granted that Hiss Tankers were familiar with. The other point is that some of the adult language I used (i.e. Zarana calling Lady Jaye a bitch) would probably not work in what most readers would expect from Gi Joe. I appreciate the feedback.
