Joes do I.T. better!

Yesterday, I was perusing my large list of favorites, looking through old links that for one reason or another, I'd bookmarked for posterity. Some are pages I visit regularly, and others are pages that I like a lot, but didn't necessarily beg for revisit often.
One such page was violentfix.com/cobra, an awesome page off to the side of a musical group's page, the focus was an awesome dio story series, surrounding a Cobra plot called Operation: Rapier. Amazing sets were built, new characters were introduced, and there was some great characterization of existing faves, all done in o-ring goodness. It's gone now. It can still be found via Way Back Machine archive, but the lease has lapsed. The same has gone for a few dedicated GI Joe dio story pages I have discovered over the years. Checkpoint Alpha was awesome, with one of my favorite renditions of Hawk ever (See Attached) - A nice custom job using a Chap Mei head. The photos did some amazing stuff with expression as well, using different hand, of all things, to convey some really novel subtleties. My point is - It's kinda sad when these works of love disappear into the ether. Getting back into Joe in earnest about ten years ago, these works were a huge part of my renewed love for the franchise, and inspired me creatively. I tried my own hand at a dio story for a bit - It's hard work, and when some of the best work disappears, it's a little sad. We'll likely always have ways to get Joe media - The best of the comics are in print, and have had reprints. The cartoons are largely available - Not all, of course, but the hallmarks. But when a single creator finally decides paying those yearly renewals isn't in the cards, or worse, then their creative vision gets absorbed into the ether. It's all very dramatic, but here's to the individuals who have given back to the community in some way, either through reviews, dio-stories, pics, customs - All the folks who've sought to create rather than destroy. I for one, appreciate the gift, and I hope those folks can somehow know how much their work meant to at least one guy. Do you guys have any feelings on the subject? What have you found to be the best of the fan work, and what can we do to preserve it, if anything? Or is it maybe meant to be ephemera? Last edited by GigaMach; 03-03-2018 at 10:59 PM.. |

Yeah...sucks.
Some were lost when geocities and other free site services ended. That was years ago now. I think that's why less dio-stories now. Still a lot of photos out there. If Joedios ever folds, what a loss that will be. I have some favorite youtube videos that were deleted or made private or something. |

YEAH THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. Sometimes with all of the feedback and comments it gets tough to go back and search for something if I missed a post.

This is just one part of what's called "Digital Decay". Lots of websites, and other info, are disappearing from the web.

I really appreciate that people still think about the work I did. Finding out that the site disappeared was a huge disappointment to me. My host, which had auto-billing set up, sold to another company, who never reached out to me to let me know that it was expiring. Everything was lost, both the band and GI Joe page. Painful to say the least. To this day I keep an eye out for those old backups, hoping to recapture what was lost.
Thank you again. |
