Cool story. Nice blend of factual events with the fiction to give a good sense of the time and setting, and it's nice to read about characters other than the Joe/Cobra usual suspects. Including the pics of the various Corps figures helped a lot.

Doesn't really roll off the tongue, though, does it. Anyway, looking forward to reading more . . . and Colonel Choate - he wouldn't happen to bear a resemblance to Oliver North now, would he?! |

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy it! As for the possibity of somebody confusing the character with the author, I'm not too worried about it, but this is a rather impersonal venue, and just wanted to make sure.

Totally fishing for feedback, no shame here.

Oliver who? Is he some sort of pop singer or something? Totally fishing for feedback, no shame here. Great work. Thanks for posting pics of the corps. Helps a lot. |

Chapter Thirteen
December 19, 1984, M'kufi village, Republic of Zambola The operation was supposed to be a simple one, Ernie Morrow thought, ducking back down into the open hatch of his APC. Heavy machine gun bullets snapped in the air over his head. Morrow, known as Fox to the rest of the Corps, was the outfit's chief tactician, and had planned the op himself. On paper it had been simple. The decommissioned LCU-1466 landing craft Jones had dug up somewhere would leave the port in Zanzibar, and make its way down the coast to Zambola. Once it reached the designated stretch of beach, the LCU would disgorge the four APCs and troops it carried. The unit would make its way the six miles overland to the camp where the Hezbollah cell that had masterminded the Kuwait Air hijacking was holed up, smash it flat, and head back to the boat. That was where the plan had gone to shit. They'd destroyed the camp and killed all the terrorists with no problem, he didn't think they'd even scuffed the vehicles' paint, but on the way back they'd almost run smack into a company of Zambolan Revolutionary Army, right around a hundred men with two tanks and a scout car. Mercifully, the Zambolans, who had been apparently attracted by the smoke and sound of fighting, had not spotted them first. Before Fox had joined the corps, he had been a major in the US 3rd Armored division, and his years living and breathing armored warfare told him that the flat and sparsely vegetated terrain was perfect tank country. The Corps' APCs would be sitting ducks. His initial move was to head south and hopefully use his speed advantage to do an end run around the Zambolans. That hope had been dashed when they were finally spotted. The dust cloud on the horizon shifted, indicating that the enemy had also turned, now heading south east to cut them off from the sea. The village of M'kufi had lay straight ahead, and Fox, who had initially intended to loop around the south of the village, had headed straight for it. The town's small buildings were the only halfway decent cover for miles in any direction. He had ordered his vehicles and men to take positions in the village, hoping to negate the advantage the flat terrain afforded the enemy tank's guns. If he could goad the enemy commander into attacking him in the village, he had a chance to knock out those tanks and escape before whatever reinforcements that had inevitably been summoned could arrive. The enemy commander had not been quite as dumb as he'd hoped though. He'd set his scout car, a locally produced copy of the French Eland, on a small rise to the north of the village, and was using the car's 20mm cannon to pepper the village with fire while the enemy infantry had made harassing feints at the town. All of this, of course, had been just to keep Fox's unit busy while the tanks carefully picked their way through the terrain towards the village. It was exactly what he would have done in his opponents position. Fox reemerged from the APC just in time to get a good look at the first tank. It was a T-1 Kifaru, the so-called "AfroTank", locally produced in Zambola and offered for export to any independent African nation in support of Pan-African solidarity. It had a high profile and weak armor, a result of the hull being designed as a platform for both a tank and an APC variant. The hull was, however, designed to be mine resistant, and the small turret held a copy of the British L7 105 mm gun, more than potent enough against Fox's lightly armored APCs. The T-1 might not have lasted long in the Fulda Gap, but it was still a tank, and that meant trouble. As if to punctuate Fox's thoughts, one of those 105mm rounds crashed into the number three APC, brewing it up instantly. He winced inwardly, though the troops had disembarked, the vehicle was a total loss and the crew undoubtably cooked. The T-1 wasn't destined to last much longer though, as seconds later it was hit by a TOW missile from number two APC. The hit detonated the tank's main magazine, blowing the turret completely off the hull. Fox keyed his mic. "Good shot, O'Grady!" He shouted. Checking his map, he continued, "Sarge, take the Dragon team the the southeast end of the village. There's a wide depression there, and I'll bet that's where the second tank is going to try for." "Already in position, boss" came Sarge's reply. Fox smiled inwardly. He was proud of his team, perhaps prouder than he had been of his old Army unit. He had helped Jones form the Corps from nothing, personally trained these men, and they had performed with distinction in every engagement. He turned his attention to the armored car. It seemed to be using its coaxial machine gun primarily now; he hoped that meant it was running low on 20mm rounds. He wished he had a mortar he could bring to bear on that hill, but if he was going to wish for stuff he wouldn't get he'd also wish for a flight of attack helicopters. A sudden boom from the south announced the demise of the second tank. Secondary explosions cracked as the tank's ammunition almost immediately began to cook off. Sarge's voice came over his headset, "Enemy tank destroyed!" The incoming fire from the enemy infantry suddenly intensified, he guessed in reaction to their realization that the second tank was now gone as well. Fox hoped that the loss of the armor would make the enemy commander chicken out and disengage long enough for him to make a break for the coast. He looked to the vehicles left and waved to catch the attention of one of his officers. Lt. Hammer caught the signal jogged over to the APC. The former Legionnaire wore the standard duck hunter camo fatigues of the Corps with a matching beret. Both were covered with soot and copious amounts of the reddish local dust. He shifted the grip on his M-16 and gave Fox an almost imperceptibly subtle salute. "Hammer, get the men on the south end of the village pulled back closer to the..." He stopped mid-sentence, suddenly aware of the complete lack of incoming fire. Just then a deep bellow rang out from the north of the village. It was immediately answered by dozens of other voices. And then again. And again, the call-and-response cadence building into a rhythmic chant. Jesus, he thought, these crazy assholes are going to rush the village. "Okay! Change of plan. Get everyone into the number two and four APCs. Head as fast as you can back to the boat. When you get aboard tell the driver to go straight east to Comoros, flank speed. You can radio the Sunset to rendezvous there instead!" Fox new that the planned return route would have brought the LCU right past the capital city, Sowezi, and well within the range of whatever air assets the government might have there. "Sir, what are you going to..." Fox cut him off. "Move. Now. That's an order!" He popped back down into the vehicle and similarly dismissed the driver. Once he was sure his men were headed out of the village, he popped the vehicle's smoke discharger. Erwin "Fox" Morrow came back up through the hatch and swung his M2 around to face the north end of the village. His hands tightened around the weapon's spade grip as the enemy's chanting changed into a scream of rage.

This board needs more Corps customs. The whole reason I even started thinking about the Corps in the context of the Joeverse was Shipshape1983's excellent Corps custom figures.
