“Delta,” Col. Abernathy began, stepping out into a vast underground complex that was beyond any of the expectations of the passengers in the elevator. “Welcome to the pit.”
After Lt.-Col. Colton and Col. Abernathy stepped off to the sides, the members of Delta stepped out into the gigantic, hollowed out cavern that seemed to envelope them. Each man and woman slowly turned around, mouth agape, taking in everything that they saw, which was quite a feat in itself. “If you don’t mind, Col. Abernathy,” Colton interjected. “I’ll take it from here.” “Certainly, sir,” the young Colonel said with a nod, before stepping aside. “This way.” “It’s so big,” O’Hara commented softly, more to herself than any of her teammates. Unfortunately, one of her teammates heard her, and had a ready comment at hand. “I hear that all the time,” Steinburg quipped, coming up next to her. Fortunately for O’Hara, she was quick on the draw, as well. “Somehow, I doubt that.” Caught off-guard, Steinburg stood there, searching for a rebuttal, as O’Hara stormed off after the group. “Off to your left are the offices, where Col. Abernathy and myself will be spending most of our time. Over off to your right are a group of offices that will be used by you.” “We get to play video games?” Kibbey asked in his thick accent. “Hardly, Specialist Kibby,” Colton replied. “That’s where you get to fight your battles with technology.” “I got that covered,” Kibbey replied with a broad grin. “Next we have the motor pool,” Colton continued, “Specialist Steinburg, I’m sure you and Specialist Pulaski will want to explore that area later.” “Only if Specialist O’Hara would like to accompany us,” Steinburg replied, smiling at his female counterpart. “How would you like to have my foot explore your ass?” O’Hara shot back. “Moving on,” Colton continued, with a slight grin, “The armory. All your weapons, ammunition, cleaning supplies… anything you need to keep your weapons in pristine condition.” “My weapon-“ “Don’t even say it,” O’Hara snapped, cutting Steinburg off abruptly. “Your weapon probably hasn’t even been fired… except by yourself.” The rest of the group howled at their female teammate’s verbal one-up on Specialist Steinburg, who stood where he was, stunned. “Wow,” Colton commented, with a shake of his head. “Off in that far corner are your living quarters. That’s where you will eat, sleep, and bathe, but… not together Specialist Steinburg.” The group just laughed at Steinburg, who frowned, and grumbled under his breath. “There’s also a target range, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, with any workout equipment you could desire. It’s got a track, a pool, a weight room, and a steam room.” “Lt.-Col.,” Specialist O’Hara began, “What about a mat room? You know, for sparring? Just in case, oh, I don’t know… I wanted to fight one of my teammates?” “You mean fight… or wrestle?” Steinburg asked with a grin. “You really wanna find out?” O’Hara retorted, spinning around and getting in her teammate’s face. “I know you do,” Steinburg replied, arrogantly. “Suite yourself,” O’Hara said, before kneeing Steinburg in the groin. The young man instantly dropped to his knees, holding his crotch, as everyone else looked on, wide-eyed, yet amused. “So, Lt.-Col. Colton,” O’Hara began, turning back to her superior officer. “How ‘bout the rest of that tour?” “Yes, ma’am,” Colton answered, trying to hide his smile as he turned and headed off. The rest of the group followed their commanding officer, except for Col. Abernathy, who knelt down next to Steinburg. “Lance,” the Colonel began, as the young man placed a hand on Abernathy’s shoulder to help pull himself to his feet. “You had that coming.” With that, Col. Abernathy threw Steinburg’s hand off, causing him to collapse back to the ground, then added in a warning tone, “Stop being an ass,” and walked off to join the group. CH10 Later on that day, after all the members of Delta had gone to their barracks, and night had fallen, Col. Abernathy sat at the worn-out wooden desk in the office portion of the pit. The only light in the make-shift office came from the dull-colored lamp on the young man’s desk, which barely shone enough illumination to allow him to see the papers he had in front of him. Pausing to rub sleep from his tired eyes, he picked up his cup of coffee to take a swig, only to find it empty. Sighing in frustration as he looked into the empty Styrofoam cup in disappointment, he then set it back down onto his desk, and returned to the file he had been reading. Before he could delve into the file any further, a knock came from the door. The Colonel looked up at the door in confusion, wondering who would be bothering him this late in the evening, then placed his hand on the service revolver holstered at his hip, just in case. “Come in,” Abernathy called, easing the gun out. The door opened, revealing Specialist Wilkinson in the dark doorway, slightly illuminated by the dim light from the fixture out in the hall. “Specialist Wilkinson,” Col. Abernathy began, relief washing over him as he reholstered his weapon. “It’s a little late. What can I do for you?” “I’m sorry to bother you, sir,” Wilkinson began. “But…there’s something I’d like to discuss with you.” “I’m assuming this couldn’t wait until tomorrow?” “Honestly, sir, this is something very important, and I’d really like to discuss it with you in private.” The Delta commander looked at the young man, wishing he would just let whatever it was he wanted to discuss simply wait until the following day, but the former Army Ranger had a determination in his eyes, as well as a hint of a conviction that just wouldn’t rest. Abernathy had a long list of tasks to complete, with less than half that amount of time to complete them in, but he sensed that if he just kept debating with the young man, he’d only lose more precious time, so finally decided to simply get it over with. “Come on in and have a seat,” Abernathy said, motioning to one of the worn chairs that sat in front of his desk. “Thank you, sir,” Wilkinson said, closing the door, and approaching the desk. “I really appreciate this, and I promise to make it worth your while.” “I’ll be the judge of that,” Col. Abernathy replied, leaning back in his chair, as the Specialist took his seat. “Coffee?” “No, sir, thank you,” Wilkinson answered. “Good, because I’m out,” the Colonel commented, looking over at the empty coffee pot sitting atop a small card table across the room. “I’ll get right to the point, sir,” Wilkinson began, leaning forward with a look of excitement on his face. “I certainly hope so, Specialist.” “I think we’ve got a great team here, I really do.” The Colonel nodded in agreement, but kept quiet, hoping the less he said would quicken the pace of Specialist Wilkinson’s speech, and therefore, get him out of his office all the more quicker. “I think we’ve got a nice mix of different skillsets, and backgrounds, as well as personalities, and backgrounds.” “Specialist, I’m well aware of who and what we have on Counter-terrorist Force Delta. I don’t need a refresher.” “No, sir, just trying to lay the groundwork for my sales-pitch,” Wilkinson replied. “Specialist Wilkinson, you are a soldier, not a salesman, and I am a soldier, not some run-of-the-mill yahoo out to buy a car or a vaccum. Either get to the point, or get out of my office.” “I want to add one more member to Delta,” Wilkinson spit out hurriedly. Abernathy looked at the young man for a moment, a look of confusion mixed with aggravation on his face, then shook his head. “Specialist, I appreciate you wanting to help, and I know you mean well, but Lt.-Col. Colton and myself personally chose the members of this team. I went through I-don’t-know-how-many files of practically every known armed-forces member in the system. I chose the very very best. The cream of the crop. Those members of Delta out there in those barracks are who I feel need to be on this team. They’re who I want on this team. And to be honest with you, they’re who I need on this team. “What I don’t need,” the Colonel continued, raising his voice as anger suddenly came into it, “Is some know-it-all punk who wants to tell me how to run my team. You think you know more than me? Then go up the ranks, get your stars, and get your own Goddamn team, because if you ever second-guess me again, you’ll be off of mine. Are we clear?” “Yes, sir.” “Then dismissed.” “He can have my spot,” Specialist Wilkinson stated, without moving. “What in God’s-name don’t you understand about ‘dismissed’”? “You bring my guy on, and he can have my spot,” the Specialist stated firmly, raising his voice a bit, in order to help him stand his ground. Specialist Lonzo Wilkinson instantly became very nervous, with half of him wishing he hadn’t made the previous statement, while the other half of him couldn’t wait to see how Col. Abernathy would respond. As Col. Clayton ‘Tomahawk’ Abernathy stared at the young man, Lonzo felt that he’d been sitting there in silence forever, although it had only been a few seconds, and the former Ranger began to feel that the Colonel would never respond. Finally, the commanding officer broke the silence. “Why is this so important to you?” Col. Abernathy asked his Specialist. The anger and higher volume were no longer present in the Colonel’s voice. Specialist Wilkinson began to feel that maybe he’d finally gotten through to his commanding officer, and would end up convincing him to see things his way. “Permission to speak freely, sir.” Abernathy motioned with his hand while keeping silent, so Lonzo took a deep breath, and went for broke. “I don’t feel this team is missing anything, Col. Abernathy. I agree with you: these are the very best candidates for Delta. You chose well. I’m not trying to second-guess anything you’ve done in any way, shape, or form. All I’m trying to do is help the team. Not that it necessarily needs it, mind you, but I figure- what’s wrong with having an extra edge?” “And what makes this guy of your’s such an extra edge?” Abernathy asked, skeptically. “His training.” “His training?” “Yes, sir.” “What kind of training has he had?” “To be honest with you, sir, I’m not sure, but-“ “So you want me to sign on some buddy of yours, someone that you’re willing to allow to replace you…but you don’t know why.” “Oh, I know why.” “But you just said you don’t know a thing about his training.” “I don’t.” “Wilkinson, I distinctly feel like you’re giving me the run-around,” Abernathy began, an aggravated tone in his voice as he rubbed his forehead, “And I’ve got to say, it’s beginning to piss me off!” “Sir, I have seen this man in action,” Wilkinson stated with conviction, “And although I can’t inform you of his training and specific background, I can tell you this- that man is the best Goddamn soldier I have ever seen in my life.” “Well, I would sure-as-hell hope so,” Abernathy replied, “If you’re willing to put your career in his hands.” “Sir, I would put my life in his hands.” “Well, no shit, Wilkinson, we’re the military! That’s what we do!” “Sir, with all due respect, no one can do what this man does.” Specialist Wilkinson locked eyes with his commanding officer, then added for emphasis, “No one.” “You were in company with this man?” “We did a couple of tours together in the war. Long Range Recon Patrol. He, myself, and two other men. I’m not trying to toot our horn, sir, but we were bad-ass.” Abernathy scoffed, but Wilkinson was rolling, so he continued. “This other guy, though…he was beyond bad-ass. He was…something altogether different. He could shoot, he could track, and he had the stamina to keep going no matter what the situation was. I’m serious, sir, this guy was almost inhuman. I mean, I trust these members of Delta, but there is no one I would trust more with my life than this man. No one.” “So if this guy’s so Goddamn good, how come I didn’t pick him for my team? And let me advise you- choose your answer carefully.” “He’s no longer enlisted.” “Then where the hell is he?” “Since the war, we’ve kept in touch. He was over in Japan for a while-“ “Japan?” “Yea, but something bad went down over there. He wouldn’t talk about it, but whatever it was, it made him come back to the states.” “So where the hell is he?” Abernathy asked again, this time through gritted teeth, not bothering to hide his exasperation. “The High Sierras.” “The High- he’s up in the mountains?” “Yes, sir.” “What- why is he up in the mountains? He some kind of P.T.S.D. hermit?” “Something like that,” Wilkinson admitted after a moment’s hesitation. “Jesus,” Abernathy laughed, leaning back and placing his hands over his face. “Wilkinson, it’s a damn good thing you’re not a salesman. Do you have any idea how crazy all this sounds?” “Yes, sir, I do.” “Do you?” the Colonel almost exclaimed, leaning forward, “Because I think that if you did, you’d have never brought this up in the first place.” “Colonel Abernathy, I know how this sounds, and I don’t blame you for reacting this way. In fact, I anticipated it. If you would have reacted any differently, then I’d have lost all respect for you, and it would have proven that you’re not the man you’re reputation says you are. “Trust me when I say this was not easy. I did not want to encur your wrath. However, my trust in this man, in this soldier, vastly outweighs any fear you could put in me in any way. I’ve seen what this man could do. He proved his ability and his worth to me several times over on the battlefield. Not in an interview, not in some classroom, and no offense, sir…not in some file. Delta needs this man. You need this man.” Abernathy’s eyes narrowed at Wilkinson, but he didn’t flinch. “At the same time, sir, this man needs Delta, and this man needs you.” “And you’d put your spot up against him?” “Yes, sir.” “Would you put him up against any other member of Delta?” “Sir, I’d put him up against all of Delta.” “Wilkinson-“ “Sir, I give you my word, as a man, as a member of Delta, and as a United States soldier,” Specialist Wilkinson began, standing up, and extending his hand across the desk, as he locked eyes with his commanding officer. “You will not regret this. He will be everything I’ve said…and more.” Former Army Ranger Specialist Lonzo Wilkinson stood stock-still, eyes locked on the eyes of his commanding officer Col. Clayton ‘Tomahawk’ Abernathy, wondering what his answer would be, and then, after a few seconds, wondering if he would even give an answer. “Alright, Specialist Wilkinson,” the Colonel finally said, breaking the uncomfortable silence as he stood up. “Let’s go get your man.” As Lonzo felt the Colonel’s firm grip on his hand, relief shot through him, while a smile spread over his face. |

Good. I welcome all feedback. Would like feedback, as seeing a buddy was the only person to read this before I posted it. This is what I want the movie to be, so, yea, I've been smiling the whole time I've been writing it.

Excelent portrayal of the Commander, the best!
That was what really shined about the work. Someone should make a film devoted to Cobra's history. |

there was a limit of 30,000 characters per thread, and so I had to split them up. Sorry. Didn't want to, but I had to. I'm not revealing anything about other characters. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, unless you really want to know. In that case, I'll pm you.
