"Okay, people! Fifteen minutes!"
Stalker yelled so the entire cabin could hear him over the roar of the C-17. They were fifteen minutes from the green light. The team, six in total, got up and double and triple checked their gear and supplies. He sat back down in his seat, and leaned into the wall of the fuselage. His pack was in between his feet, MK18 in his lap. His rifle and backpack were camouflaged the same multicam pattern that were on his BDUs (Battle Dress Uniform). Beachhead leaned over and showed him the overlay of the drop zone. He pointed to a small village twelve miles to the North, and Stalker nodded, acknowledging that it was the recon area. "Hey Stalker!" Stalker leaned forward and looked back towards Rock N' Roll, who was painting his face while calling to him. "You want me bringing the extra barrel kit for the 249? We supposed to be running into trouble?" Stalker looked at him while he finished his awful paint job on his face. Low Light, Steeler, and Footloose all stopped what they were doing and looked up, curious as to how Stalker was going to respond. Stalker smirked at his surfer friend, and realized everyone was listening in. "Buddy," he said with a noticed concern, "you know as well as I do that every time we come back here we run into trouble." Steeler leaned back into his seat and just stared. "I hate Sierra Gordo."

The back of the C-17 lowered, and the team prepared for the jump. It was the dead of night, and the visibility was poor.
The fuselage was blacked out, minus the dim red light that was the only illumination they had. Within seconds, the dim red light turned into a dim green light. "Okay, man, let's do this!" Footloose screamed from the back of the stack. They jumped, one by one, seemingly synchronized with each other. As they glided down to the drop zone Stalker noticed the river nearby through the thick fog. He started thinking of the times he had been to that very same riverbank. His mind started wandering. Stalker snapped out of it meters before he hit the ground. Rock N' Roll moved and took overwatch while Stalker disconnected from the parachute. Beachhead and Low Light were already point, and Steeler took the flank. Footloose was about 20 meters behind them. Stalker emerged from the landing and signaled to Footloose. He acknowledged and moved up. They joined Beachhead and Low Light. The team was intact. "Let's start to move and cover as much ground before daybreak. Five meter spread. Low Light, you take point." Stalker knew that Low Light had sort of a sixth sense in the dark, and was glad he was assigned to this mission. "Roger." Low Light responded. "Rock N' Roll follow with the LMG (light machine gun). Let's get get to the village, get the intel we need and get the hell out of here." WHERE HAVE I HEARD THAT BEFORE? Stalker kept having images flash through his head as he spoke. When he looked up, Low Light was already twenty meters ahead. "Okay, maintain silence until further notice." The all moved to their positions. He looked at Rock N' Roll, and the huge Californian was already fixed on him. They acknowledged each other that this was too familiar. Rock N' Roll then quickly turned, and moved up to support Low Light.

Low Light stopped and sunk into the earth. Rock N' Roll held his fist up signaling those behind him to stop. Everyone froze and became one with the closest shadow near them.
They heard nothing. Minutes passed and Stalker started becoming impatient. He crawled up towards Rock N' Roll. "Can you see anything?" He whispered. Rock N' Roll shook his head. He wasn't even sure where Low Light was anymore. Seconds later, Low Light rose from the ground about twenty meters in front of them. He signaled for the group to move up. Stalker moved next to him. "What did you see?" he asked. Low Light pointed towards the cliffs to the West. "I thought it was someone watching us. I may have been wrong." "Did he have a long gun?" Stalker asked. "I don't know. I don't even know if it was actually a person." Stalker was skeptical, but he knew better than to completely dismiss Low Light, especially in the darkness. "How long was this figure there?" "That's the thing," Low Light explained, "I noticed him about an hour ago and thought it was nothing. He's been following us. I think. I can't be sure yet." Low Light was one of the best snipers on the team, even without night vision equipment. Stalker knew there was someone out there just from the concern on Low Light's face. Stalker signaled back and everyone pulled their NVG (night vision goggles) down over their eyes. "That won't help." Low Light said. He reached into his pack and pulled out a huge scope, and turned it on. It made a soft humming sound. "Thermal imager." Low Light whispered. He scanned for a moment in each direction. "What do you see?" Stalker asked. Low Light shut off the imager because it made enough noise that it would give up their position, and became unnecessarily hot, especially in that climate. He looked at Stalker with a guilty grin. "Stalker, you're going to laugh at me. I think it was a monkey." Stalker just looked at him with satirical disapproval. "You're creeping me out, man." he said, half joking, half serious. They exchanged glances, and Low Light grabbed his gear, turned and continued on. Rock N' Roll moved up next to Stalker, who was staring off in the darkness. "Stalker, what was it?" he asked. Stalker just kept staring. "Lonzo!" Rock N' Roll said in a hard whisper. Stalker snapped his head to Rock N' Roll. "Monkeys. Low Light saw monkeys." he was trying to convince himself. "Got any bananas?" he chuckled. Rock N' Roll just shook his head. "You're creeping me out, man."

"Sixty meters. Four..no, five tangos."
Low Light was on his rifle, looking through the scope. Stalker moved up next to him and surveyed the illuminated area with his night vision. Low Light's high powered illuminator allowed him to brighten up an area of his choosing as long as the observer followed with a set of NVGs (Night Vision Goggles). Hopefully the opposition force didn't have anything similar. Stalker was thankful that he had the right night vision equipment on this mission to Sierra Gordo, unlike prior engagements. "Can you identify them?" Stalker asked. "Yes. Local militants." He kept looking through his rifle. They were dressed in local attire, garrison caps, no military markings. Bandoliers of ammunition were slung over two of their torsos. They all had AK-47s, except for one, who had a pistol. Stalker turned and gave a few instructions via hand signals. Footloose and Beachhead started moving into a flanking position to protect Stalker and Low Light. Rock N' Roll and Steeler moved to an elevated position to provide a base of fire, if necessary. They were all within whispering earshot. "Let's see if they have anything to do with Sierra Lindo." Stalker whispered. "They have two prisoners." Low Light said. Stalker furrowed his brow. "Not our problem. We can't break cover." "One is an older man, approximately forty years old." Stalker checked and saw where Low Light was looking. The man was bound, but bloodied and beaten. "The other is a young kid. A girl. I'd say twelve....maybe thirteen years old." Stalker looked through the night vision again. Low Light was illuminating the girl. She was approximately five feet tall, and had dark skin, and long dark hair. Her hands were bound with rope, her clothes filthy and tattered. She looked emaciated. One of the militants shoved her with the muzzle of his weapon. She fell to the ground, and gasped in fright. The men just laughed and kept toying with her. The man tried to get up and defend her, and they kicked him down to the ground. "They could be from the village." Beachhead uttered softly. Stalker said nothing. His brow was now furrowed with anger. Low Light continued to provide intel; "Stalker, the jeeps they're using are Cobra Stinger jeeps. They're old and outdated, but the insignias are still there." "Doesn't mean anything. Cobra's left all kinds of weapons and vehicles here. Abandoned factories are all over the place." Stalker said to himself. The man with a pistol walked up to the bound man and raised his pistol. He fired and struck the man in the knee. The man screamed in pain, and started to beg. Everyone could hear him beg for the life of his daughter. "Stalker...." Beachhead whispered. "We can't let them..." he stopped. "I know!" he angrily whispered back to Beachhead. Stalker turned to Rock N' Roll, who was already placing the suppressor on his weapon. Steeler was doing the same. He turned to Beachhead and Footloose, who were both ready to act silently. "The one with the pistol is in charge." Low Light observed. "I think they're going to take them somewhere, so we have time." The team held it's collective breath, as Low Light continued. Two Stingers, one is covered with a soft top. The second has a .50 cal mounted on it, no cover. They're riding two in the soft top, three in the fifty. They're getting ready to roll. East." Stalker motioned his hand, and gave the order. "When Low Light shoots the man on the fifty, eliminate the second vehicle. The civilians are in the soft top. Steeler, only use the HE rounds (High Explosive) if things get out of control with the .50 cal. Beachhead and Footloose, get the prisoners as quickly as possible." Beachhead and Footloose moved into an ambush position on the ravine that led East. The small motorcade would certainly pass through there. Rock N' Roll and Steeler moved over the top of the ravine, and they'd be able to provide a base of fire and would undoubtedly not be seen until it was too late. Steeler had an M203 on his rifle, and enough HE rounds to take out a platoon of Cobra Vipers. They were all in position by the time the two jeeps started to move. As they approached, Low Light took aim. Thwaap! The man who was on the .50 cal turret was gone. The other two started yelling as the rusty Stingers continued in the same direction, speeding up. They had no idea where the incoming fire was coming from. Rock N' Roll opened fire on the open top Stinger, eliminating the remaining two militants easily. The jeep went out of control and came to a quick stop against the ravine wall. He moved his sights to the covered jeep, but couldn't pull the trigger from fear of hitting the civilians. Beachhead and Footloose opened fire on the soft top jeep's tires. Air could be heard escaping quickly from the tires. The Stinger undoubtedly had run flats of some kind. BLAM..POP!! Suddenly, one of the front tires blew out, and the jeep went out of control crashing into a tree. The front passenger was ejected out of the jeep, and rolled into a large rock. He was still conscious and tried to stand up. The driver was trying to get out of the Stinger. Beachhead and Footloose came upon both of them before they realized what was happening. "Los manos, arriba!" Beachhead ordered, rifle pointed at the driver. The man reached for his rifle, which was on the dashboard. Beachhead crowded the car menacingly, pointing his barrel at the man's head, "Sin la arma!" he warned. The man thought twice, and raised his hands slowly. Footloose ran over to the stumbling man by the rock and muzzle jabbed him in the chest. He crumbled to the ground like a sack of potatoes. "Pardon me, man, I just work here." he said with his Indiana charm, and proceeded to knock the man out with the butt of his rifle. In no time, the two surviving militants were bound and set down against the wreck of the Stinger. Beachhead and Footloose moved to the Stinger and cleared it. They pulled open the door and found the young girl, bound and gagged in the floor of the back seat. Her father laid next to her, unconscious. She looked up at them terrified. "No preocupes, estamos soldados de Los Estados Unidos." Beachhead told her. They retrieved the two out of the jeep, cut their bonds and moved towards the jungle. Beachhead led the way with the man over his shoulder, and Footloose carried the girl in his arms. They quickly disappeared into the shadows of the jungle back towards the rest of the team.

Beachhead ran up back to where Rock N' Roll and Steeler had overwatch, and gently laid the man down. He checked his pulse, and started to tend to his knee.
Stalker and Low Light joined them. Low Light moved to the edge of the ravine and started to observe the bound men who were left with the destroyed Stinger. "How is he?" Stalker asked Beachhead. "He's going to be alright as long as we can get him to some kind of advanced medical care," Beachhead said, "otherwise he's going to lose his leg." Stalker shook his head with sorrow for the man. Whoever he was, he appeared to be tortured. He turned to look for Footloose, who was standing right behind him protecting the girl in his arms. Her head was buried in his shoulder. She was sobbing. "Why don't you put her down, Footloose?" Stalker said gently. He put her down next to the injured man. Beachhead, who was working on him slowed his movement and met his eyes with the girl. She looked back at him, asking for permission to tend to her father with her eyes. Beachhead handed her a bandage, which she accepted and started to wipe the man's blood stained face. "Is he your father?" He asked. "....Yes....," she said with a heavy Spanish accent. ".....is he.....?" Tears rolled down her cheeks fearing the worst. "No." Beachhead answered. He said no more, and continued to bandage the man's leg. Stalker knelt down next to her. "What is your name?" She looked up at Stalker, and then back to her father. "Anna." She said. "Anna," Stalker repeated. "Why were those people trying to harm you?" Anna kept wiping at her father's wounds. "They want my father to make them rich." Stalker was confused, but let her continue. "When he refused, they threatened to kill me. My father took me in the night and we ran from our village. The bad man sent these men to find us, and bring us back." Rock N' Roll was listening, stroking his beard. "What is the name of your village?" "Sierra Lindo." She said. Stalker looked at Rock N' Roll. Duke knew what he was doing by sending them. He knew that the rumors of a new cabal in Sierra Gordo. He chose Stalker, Steeler and Rock N' Roll specifically because of their experience there. "Do you have family anywhere else in Sierra Gordo?" She looked at Stalker, and started to cry. ".....no....not anymore." She said, weeping. "They killed my mother, and my brother. If not for La Madre Sombra, we would have been killed as well." "La Madre Sombra?" "Yes. If not for her, our village would be completely under the control of the bad people. She is the spirit of our village. We pray with her. She protects us." "I see." Stalker said. He didn't know what to think. He had so many follow up questions, but couldn't put them in any kind of discernible order. There was a moment of awkward silence, and they watched the girl gently weep over her unconscious father. Beachhead did all he could and stood up, removing his balaclava, wiping his brow. Rock N' Roll and Steeler held their respective sectors, but kept looking back at the girl. Footloose knelt down next to her, and offered her some chocolate from his MRE (Meal Ready to Eat). "Do you want some chocolate? It's not very good, but it's all I have." She broke into a little smile and accepted. She sat, eating the chocolate and watching her father. "Your father looks like my father." Footloose said. "Really?" She said. "Is he a good man, too?" "Oh, yeah..," Footloose said. "He was the best." He started chatting with her, and she began to calm down. Stalker looked on, satisfied of the effect Footloose had on her. He was always good with kids, being a coach and all. Rock N' Roll smiled at the sight as well. There was a moment of levity for everyone. "Stalker," Low Light's tone ruined the good vibes. "We have more company."

The Sikorsky CH-53 came in as fast as Low Light called to Stalker.
"Get down!" Stalker ordered. Everyone shrunk down and concealed themselves. Footloose grabbed his pack and detached the camo bivy that was rolled up, shook it so it opened up and covered himself, Anna and her father with it. "Stay quiet!" He told her. She had her arms around her father and looked at Footloose and nodded. Low Light stayed motionless where he was. He watched the Sikorsky fly in and land in the ravine near the wrecks. "They must have some kind of tracking device in those Stingers." Stalker whispered. The huge helicopter's rear ramp lowered, and armed men started exiting and responding to the wrecked jeeps. "Sixteen militants, similar dress, AK-47s, two SVDs........which won't be a problem.......and......" he paused. "Dreadnoks." "What?" Stalker gasped. Damn it, Duke. We need an entire platoon of Joes, not just the six of us! "It's Monkeywrench. Positive I.D." Low Light confirmed in his stoic manner of reporting intel. Stalker thought about Monkeywrench's last business in Sierra Gordo. He oversaw the manufacture and operations of a Cobra facility. This would explain the Stingers. Low Light watched as they investigated the two wrecks. He watched Monkeywrench and a few of the militants go over to the bound men. As one of the men went to untie them, Monkeywrench waved him off. He began to talk to the more coherent of the two, and as the man tried to speak, Monkeywrench's voice became louder and angrier. The man, pleading for his life, looked toward the cliffs where the Joe team was concealed, and then Monkeywrench and militants all looked that way. "Stalker, we've got problems." Low Light said. Monkeywrench turned and started barking orders. About a dozen of them formed a skirmish line, and started walking up the ravine. The remaining four, plus Monkeywrench started towards the helicopter with the unconscious bound man. The conscious man yelled and fell over, prompting them to turn around and look. Monkeywrench, without hesitation, raised his pistol and shot the man in his head. He turned and boarded the helicopter, that was already spinning its blades. "We need to get out of here, now." Low Light advised. Stalker's whisper was more audible; "Let's move, people! North. Rock N' Roll, take point with Steeler. Footloose, Beachhead, the civilians!" Footloose grabbed his camo bivy and rolled it up in seconds. He grabbed Anna as Beachhead picked up her father over his shoulder. Together, they broke their concealment and prepared to move. Quickly, all eight of them disappeared into the cover of the jungle.

They were running in darkness, single file. Rock N' Roll led the way with his SAW pointed in the direction of travel.
Stalker was the last one, making sure everyone was accounted for. He could hear them coming, which meant they didn't have time. "Mira, soldados allá!" "Damn it!" Stalker cursed himself for letting stay there so long. The intel was strong, but not worth getting caught. Now they had civilians with them, and Stalker couldn't leave them behind. He caught up with Low Light, who was looking back for Stalker. "We're not going to make it, the ravine cliff ends, and it's about a five hundred foot drop. We're going to get caught." He said. Stalker was fighting with himself, not knowing whether to surrender or set up a defensive position. They could beat a dozen militants, but had civilians with them. They caught up with the rest of the team. Steeler was already in a defensive position waiting for the two of them. "Stalker, we've got major issues here." He said. Stalker looked around. There were some rocks, and a few downed trees that they could use, but then had the fall of the cliff behind them. He made his decision. "Footloose, you watch over the civilians behind that boulder." He pointed to the biggest boulder there. "Beachhead and I will move to the Eastern flanking position. Rock and Roll, you're base of fire with Steeler. Low Light, find a vantage point and take out heavy gunners first. Let's distract them from Footloose, Anna and her father." They all nodded and moved. Footloose moved behind the largest boulder with Beachhead, who laid the man down. He was still unconscious, but alive. Beachhead went to turn, and Footloose grabbed his arm. Beachhead turned, looking with a confused furrowed brow, and Footloose was offering his AT-4. "Just in case." He said. Beachhead nodded, accepted it, turned and left. They all moved into position. They could hear the men talking, hunting them. The Sikorsky had disappeared. "Probably went back to the village." Stalker thought. It was barely audible anymore. He was sure it would circle and hunt, but it was gone, thankfully. The team was set. The sounds of the militants got louder and louder. They were close. They braced for the first man to break the cover of jungle. BLAM! It was a heavy ballistic crack, followed by chaos. One of the militants had been shot. Screams of being under attack were heard. BLAM! BLAM! All that the Joes could hear was return fire from the militants, but none of it was directed at them. Stalker looked to were Low Light was, but he stayed in his firing position quietly waiting. BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! "Where the hell was it coming from?!" The militants started to withdraw and retreat. Rounds were flying everywhere, but none purposely directed towards the Joes. They were firing in all directions, trying to defend themselves, but clearly had no idea what was happening. It was followed by sounds of them running through the jungle aimlessly, just trying to avoid getting shot. Beachhead heard one man scream that his comrade's head had exploded, and was panicking like a lunatic. BLAM! His voice was extinguished with the last shot heard. The chaos eventually into faint sounds, then disappeared entirely. The rest of the militants had retreated, in who knows what direction. "They probably have no idea where they are." Stalker said to himself. It was eerily quiet for a few moments, but the Joes stayed in a defensive position, not knowing who or what was out there. Footloose kept looking from behind the boulder, and saw nothing either. When he turned back to check on the civilians, all he saw was Anna kneeling, her hands together and eyes closed. She was praying. Stalker finally broke the cover, and moved out into the darkness, testing the area. Surely someone would fire if they knew he was there. Nothing. He motioned that it was clear. They all emerged, and collected themselves. Rock N' Roll was looking into the jungle in awe. "What in holy hell just happened?"

Stalker stood there for a second and stared into the darkness. The rest of the team came up behind him trying to spot whatever Stalker couldn't see.
"Did anyone see......anything?" Stalker asked. Silence. "Okay then. Let's get the hell out of here before the sun comes up. It's only five or six more miles to Sierra Lindo, so we can rest in a few hours." Footloose came around the corner of the large boulder he hid with the civilians. "Stalker, you have to...well....you have to come back here." Beachhead and Low Light provided security while the others went to see what was going on. When they turned the corner, Anna was sitting next to her father, who was awake and sitting up. He looked at the soldiers with reverence. "Thank you, señor. Anna tells me we are in your debt." Stalker answered right away. "No problem. How are you feeling?" "I'm awake, but my leg is in obvious pain." "One of my men gave you a morphine injection. It is probably wearing off. We'll give you more for the journey to Sierra Lindo. Is there a doctor there who can help you?" The man looked at his daughter, then back to Stalker. "You're taking us back to them?" Stalker was confused. "Of course not. Unless you're telling me Sierra Lindo is under hostile control?" "Yes, señor. This is what has happened. Our people have been forced into a slave labor, working at the abandoned factory." A light went off in Stalker's head. "A factory that makes weapons?" "Yes, señor. The one that the 'Serpents' left after the Sierra Gordo civil war." "And this man with the English accent, is he in charge?" "Yes. He was here overseeing the factory many years ago. He has promised the men who follow him riches. The mines are rich with ore, and since there is no cost to him it is very lucrative for when he sells the weapons on the black market." "I see." Stalker said. "Then why is everyone carrying old AK-47s, and driving rusty jeeps." "They are left over from the civil war. The factory has been altered to manufacture nuclear warheads. This is why Sierra Lindo was taken and forced to work." "Nukes?" Stalker wasn't happy, but continued. "And why the deep interest in you and Anna?" The man sighed. "I am a scientist who worked for General Villavaca when he made deals with the one with the silver head years ago. When Villavaca was overthrown, I hid in Sierra Lindo. The factory I was working in was near there, and previously run by this man with the English accent before Villavaca fought the 'Serpents' and pushed them out. Unfortunately, he was just as corrupt as they were." Stalker just listened. "Now this man has returned knowing there is no liberation force to fight against. He wants me to make bombs so he can sell them to the highest bidder world wide. Sierra Gordo has one of the richest uranium ore deposits in the world. During the civil war, this information was kept secret." Stalker had likely found the information Duke was seeking. He would probably have been there with them had he not been injured in the Fort Campbell fiasco with Scrap Iron. "My men and I still need to go to Sierra Lindo. I can't leave you in the middle of the jungle." "Yes, I understand." He looked at Anna. He wanted nothing but her safety. "Is there someone we can trust there?" Anna jumped in the conversation. "Yes, of course! We can trust La Madre Sombra!" "Anna!" Her father said in a reprimanding tone. "But father, they are good people. She will not hurt them." The man turned to Stalker with a nervous smile. "Just a myth of the jungle." The man said. "The children believe a woman watches over them." Stalker didn't know what to say. "Is there a doctor in Sierra Lindo we can trust?" He had no time for stories. "Yes, señor, yes. When we get there I will show you." Stalker formulated a plan. "Let's get moving, people. Let's give.....I'm sorry, what's your name?" "Hector Velasquez." He responded. "Hector, please call me Stalker. This is Rock N' Roll, Steeler, and you've met Footloose. The others are Beachhead and Low Light." "Such serious names." He responded. "Let's get going. I have a feeling these men will return, and in greater numbers."
