The Jets are coming right back I would guess. Things are not looking good. How far away is Barrage and the rest of the Artillery?

^ well, Soviet (and now Russian) and former Warsaw air doctrine was pretty regimented. Most air missions were carefully planned at least a day prior, and there weren't many opportunities for CAS as we think of it. I've assumed a few planes have the SEAD mission and a few more the CAS mission, but the bulk of Borovian AF is restricted to pre-planned missions. For now!

The Ride Around Frusenland
__________________________ “We’re in rough shape,” Steeler said, checking off the reports. He glanced up at the camouflage net hastily strung over the Quickstrike, backed into the woods. “Ambulance is full with Flash, Trip Wire and Tunnel Rat. Good thing Borovian Naval Infantry “only” has 122mm artillery[93] and nothing heavier.” Steeler shook his head, thinking of the impact of being on the receiving end of a battalion of artillery. “And good thing they didn’t have airburst fuses,” added Short Fuze. “We’re going to be towing two Maulers,” said Armadillo. “They’re already switching from cables to A-frames. Frostbite’s engine is out, and Cold Front’s sprocket and track took damage from the artillery. More APC tires were shredded than we have replacements so they're running on four or five tires, and the Desert Fox was destroyed. We're down to partial ammo loads, and even with redistribution each vehicle has no more than two smoke. We’re out of replacement antennae, so a couple of vehicles won’t have comms, but that may not matter because of all the jamming. Somehow none of the prisoners were hurt, but that truck is a write off. Barricade had to push it the last klick and a half. We’ll put ‘em in the APCs.” “At least the artillery stopped,” muttered Dial Tone. Storm nodded, looking at the filthy, exhausted crew commanders. “Yeah. Barrage must have got Short Fuze’s coordinates and dropped a missile on them. That helps. And their jets seem spooked by our missiles.” Rampart winced. “We’re down to one anti-air missile. Guns won’t deter those jets, though we may be at the limits of their range. I'm more worried about UAVs right now.” “Ok. We go with speed. There’s no mobile force this side of the river. We have to sprint back to friendly lines before they get organized enough to swim back north." He thought about the vehicles being towed, reconsidering the word "sprint." "Get the BDV up early in the order of march in case we run across any more scatterable minefields. How are we for fuel?” Armadillo sucked in air. “We’re siphoning from the towed tanks, but it’s gonna be close.” “We’ve messed up a Naval Infantry brigade. If it was easy they wouldn’t have sent us. Now mount up and let’s head for home so we can refit and get back in the fight,” said Storm. ___ 93 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2S1_Gvozdika |

The Ride Around Frusenland
__________________________ “That skeleton force is still in their dug in positions,” said Grand Slam, watching the RPV feed. “Let’s keep them there,” muttered Barrage, confirming that the last Lance missile was laid on their position. “Man I wish we could locate their CP,” said Grand Slam. “Their leadership is a little too sharp for my liking.” A jeep pulled up to the position and Sub Zero jumped down. “I have some good news. The Frusenlanders are pushing their SLAMs forward. We can cover the tail end of Storm’s return.” Barrage turned at another approaching dust trail. A jeep pulled up, driven by Barbecue. Hawk stepped out and took a look at the monitor. “Pack it all up and head for the airport.” “What?!” asked Barrage. “Pack up. We’re leaving. The Pentagon freaked that Borovians had anti-ship cruise missiles here and has ordered all shipping to back off, and freaked again that we might get mixed up in a mission with war crimes. Our mission is over and we’ve been ordered out.” Barrage nodded slowly. “Ok. We’ll come in once Storm has bypassed the last Borovian element.” “No. Now,” said Hawk. Thunder,[94] leaning forward on the bench in the Warthog, reached past Barrage, flicked the cover off the trigger and fired. The Lance missile leapt from the Warthog, shaking the vehicle, racing towards the Borovian position. “It’s such a monumental pain in the ass preparing those missiles for shipment,” he said to Hawk, shrugging. *** The battered column limped past the Frusenland defensive line. Storm tossed his small pack to the ground and climbed down from the vehicle, easing the aches from his shoulders and rubbing his back. He ran a hand over the stubble on his chin. An approaching Frusenland soldier handed him a bottle of water, which he splashed on his face. Cold Front’s tank, pulling Frostbite’s on an A-frame, pulled to a halt, followed by the rest of the tanks. The support vehicles pulled into neat lines beside the tanks. A stocky Frusenland officer approached Storm and saluted. “I am officially to rebuke you for damaging our vehicles,” he said in officially accented English. “My soldiers,” he waved his hand to a formed up body of troops standing in front of several trucks, “will sign for these armoured vehicles now.” Storm nodded, barely hearing the words through the fatigue. He glanced up at the rumble of a recovery vehicle moving beside Frostbite’s tank. Frusenlanders were already removing the engine cover, and a replacement engine waited to be dropped in. “Unofficially,” continued the Frusenland officer, a grin crossing his face, “I wish to congratulate you on a magnificent demonstration of cavalry.” He gripped Storms hand, transferring a black enamel badge of a knight slaying a dragon on one side, and the skull of a saber-tooth tiger on the other. “It is the official and unofficial Frusenland armour badges. And I promise I will use these tanks as you did!” He waved his hand and his troops ran forward, helping the Joes transfer their kit to the trucks, and transferring the wounded to an ambulance. Storm blinked and looked around, disoriented. His fighters sprawled, exhausted, in the back of a truck, Frusenland terrain passing quickly. He looked at his watch. He’d been sleeping for almost an hour and couldn’t even remember getting on the truck. The vehicle slowed, entering an airport. Hawk stood at the steps to a C-5, beside a man in a suit. The man eyed the filthy, exhausted Joes, stinking of diesel and cordite, and shook his head. “You all grossly exceeded your bounds, making this a very delicate situation for America,” he started. “How do you think you look not extracting all the ODA? We had to put political pressure on the Frusenlanders to accelerate their preparations to link up with their own partisans to recover Your - " he jabbed a finger at Captain Jones " - missing soldiers." Hawk held up his hand. “They’re my troops. I’ll deal with them. It’s enough that you can confirm they’re leaving the country.” Storm tried to find the energy to say something, but had to content himself with merely keeping his eyes open. “I was clear. Get the ODA and get out.” Storm nodded. “This wasn’t our fight,” continued Hawk. Storm stared at the suited man who finally blinked. "I’ll head back to the embassy,” he finally said, straightening his jacket and tie. Everyone watched the man stride to his car, and exchanged brief glances. “Not our fight,” repeated Storm. “And when has that ever stopped us before?” Hawk checked to make sure the suited man was gone and smiled. “Get on the plane you jackass.” A smile broke Hawk’s angry expression. “And tell me all about it!” **End** ___ 94 Thunder (v1) G.I. Joe Action Figure - YoJoe Archive ___ Author’s Note: This story was inspired by two events, one old and one recent. The old event is J.E.B. Stuart’s ride around McClellan’s army during the American Civil War. It didn’t accomplish much, but it was bold. The more recent event is the war in Ukraine, which involves violence on a scale unseen by western armies in decades (https://www.scribd.com/doc/274009061...so-Ukraine-War). For the orbat geeks among you, I based the Borovian threat on the Naval Infantry structure found here (Naval Infantry - Organization and Equipment). I then beefed them up with a self-propelled artillery battalion, a couple of heavy rocket launchers (TOS), UAVs, an electronic warfare capability, and the means to deliver mines (YOJOE.COM | Cobra Imp - when I first saw this I thought it was a long-range air defence system, but then realised it delivered mine) to fill the gaps between the non-contiguous battalions. Hope you enjoyed, and let me know if the footnotes were helpful or a distraction. |

I can almost see Thunder in the moment of exhaustion and disbelief launching the missle. I want to dust off my Warthog now. Not to mention my IMPs, Brawler, Coastal Defender (I have most of the pieces), Quickstrike and Mudbuster. Were there Adders as well?

Funny you should ask about the Adder. No - there weren't any . . . but there almost were. When I first came up with the idea for this story I had the idea of Borovia setting up a complex Anti Access/Area Denial system, composed of anti-ship cruise missiles and high altitude air defence systems (like S300: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-300_(missile)). Joe would have to slip between Borovian units to locate and destroy the mobile systems, allowing a larger counter-attack force to enter the theatre. I figured the Adder and Imp would be good AD missiles, until I read the blueprints. Imps do scatterable mines and Adders have clustered anti-tank munitions. Instead of reinventing their purposes I decided to stick to the blueprints, which in turn forced a change in the story. |

Adders are Anti-Tank? I only mentioned them since I found a box in the basement that had a couple of each and I thought they would have fit into the story. As anti-Aircraft.

You would think that from looking at them, but the blueprints describe them as surface to surface missiles and the warheads are anti-tank cluster munitions.
