The Ride Around Frusenland
___________________________ Covergirl[40] ran through a series of plyometric exercises in the cramped Wolverine [40] compartment, trying to work the kinks out of her back. Still one hour before dawn. She flipped the goggles up on her helmet and glanced down again at the map on her lap, comparing her position with the shadows of treelines and ridges around her. Mentally placing terrain features, she visualised her route to the next waiting area. In the distance, a flare streaked into the sky and hung, casting an eerie glow and causing shadows to dance. Faint bursts of automatic weapons rang out, followed by the crack of heavier cannons. Adrenaline shot through her body as she started the Wolverine’s engine, taking her cue from the Quickstrike. The security element moved through low ground, past the silhouettes of the Equalizer, the Brawler and the Coastal Defender[42] adopting air defence positions, and snaked its way towards the sound of guns. Steeler waved the column forward, holding his arms out, and the security element vehicles fanned out into extended line, slowing as they approached the crest of the ridge. Covergirl watched Salvo[43] break left of the Quickstrike and drive his Wolverine into a firing position. She edged her Wolverine to the right and into a position where the terrain masked the bulk of her vehicle, with only her missiles and sights visible from the low ground. Flames licked through a copse of trees, and her thermal sight showed the blooms of a destroyed T-55 [44] and a BTR-60. [45] A muzzle flash from the trees revealed another tank and she laid on, firing a missile. She smiled in grim satisfaction at the impact then a frown crossed her face. “That didn’t look right,” she muttered, studying the thermal sight. The T-55 backed deeper into the trees and out of her sight. Cover Girl swore and searched for more targets. A pair of sharp cracks came from the west, smashing through trees but not causing further damage, and Maulers bounded across the open ground, dashing to take cover behind tiny folds. A flash from one of Salvo’s missiles momentarily blinded her. Salvo tracked the missile to impact, destroying a BTR. The flash momentarily illuminated the straight lines of a vehicle he hadn’t picked up previously, likely one which hadn’t been running for hours and had a negligible head signature. He zoomed in on the vehicle, trying to make out the unfamiliar lines. Something clicked. “Engineer vehicle,”[46] he muttered, firing another missile, trailing it to impact. Major Storm smacked his hand off the turret in frustration. His force was too small to cut off enemy withdrawal, and he could now tell that the enemy tanks had some kind of additional protection system.[47] He waved Thunderwing’s assault element forward, though there were no more obvious targets, and glanced at the sky. Dawn’s first glimmering light was edging around the eastern horizon. A shadow passed overhead and Storm frowned. A ripsaw burst of fire came from behind the support element and the shadow broke into pieces, tumbling from the sky. A cold tremor ran down his spine and he grabbed the radio. “UAV.[48] Break contact.” He pointed his Mauler east and gunned the engine, waving his strike force along, covering almost two kilometres in mere minutes. The tanks were in the treeline, drivers shovelling dirt over the tank ruts and the crews wrestling with camouflage nets. The last elements were backing into the wood as the sound of ripping canvas and shrieking metal filled the sky and heavy artillery impacted in the battle positions they’d vacated twenty minutes prior. Windchill pulled his hatch shut and turned to Major Storm. “Is it just me, or are the Borovians better than we anticipated?” “We can still adapt quicker than them. I’m instituting a new SOP for engaging tanks: volley fire.” ___ 40 http://www.yojoe.com/images/resize/w...e/43/75092.jpg 41 YOJOE.COM | Wolverine 42 YOJOE.COM | Coastal Defender 43 Salvo (v1) G.I. Uh-Oh things are getting dicey.
What role do you have the Brawler in? Artillery? Can't the Equalizer take care of the UAVs? Volley-Fire mean they are going to take a stand?

LowTech, you have a lot of good stuff here. Are you publishing any of this in Kindle Worlds?

The Brawler is doing both. It's missiles look bigger than those on the Equalizer so I see it engaging targets at a bit higher altitude. I've also pretended that it has a radar . . . The Equalizer is a great vehicle for killing UAVs (that was what fired the "ripsaw burst . . ."). But a UAV operator is still going to learn something either way. If the UAV flies the operator will see the targets below. If the UAV dies the operator will know something with a moderate low-level anti-air capability is at grid xyz. Volley fire may not be the right term, but here's the general idea: western tanks, when spotting multiple targets, assign individual targets to individual tanks. Let's say there are three friendly tanks and three enemy tanks. The commander would say something like "tank X take the left one, tank y take the center one, I'll take the right one." That way all targets are engaged as quickly as possible. But if the tanks are too tough to be killed by a singe shot, then (to use the same scenario), the commander would say "everyone engage the left tank, then the centre tank, then the right tank." That way everyone gangs up on a target to overwhelm its armour. Thanks! I haven't published any of this anywhere. For one, I don't know jack about Kindle Worlds, and for another, I would have to sit down and re-edit everything before publishing to a broader forum. And that doesn't sound like much fun! |

The Ride Around Frusenland
__________________________ Rumbler pulled up at the crest, studying the ground ahead. He waved, and Crank Case whipped past skidding down a bend, and raced across the open ground. A flash of light from a flank caught Rumbler’s attention, and a round impacted just short of the Mudbuster, but with enough force to flip the small vehicle, tossing an occupant free. “Crap,” spat Rumbler, traversing his gun to return fire. He squeezed the trigger as he toggled his radio. “Fire mission!” Several kilometers to the rear, Short Fuze[48] plugged the fire mission into the Brawler’s computer and slid a 77mm shell into the breech. Moments later, the roar of the cannon caused birds to burst from the treetops. As he waited for corrections he hit a button, sending the mission in a burst transmission back to Major Barrage and the Warthog crews. Thunderwing waved the assault force forward, guns traversing and looking for targets. The treeline burned, and tree limbs flew through the air as artillery rounds impacted. Thunderwing edged his Mauler forward, and ducked down as the tank shuddered. “That was a direct hit,” drawled Heavy Duty[49] in the gunner’s position. He traversed and made out three turrets along a far ridgeline. Dirt geysered around them. “Three tanks on ridgeline,” Thunderwing said into his radio. “Engage sequentially from left to right.” “Main sight is out. Using backup,” Heavy Duty said, estimating the distance, and squeezing the trigger. He watched the round impact short and to the right of his target, and blinked at the near simultaneous muzzle flash in return from that tank. Two rounds slammed into the T-55, ripping it apart in flames. The Mauler rang like a church bell as another 100mm shell ricocheted off the sloped armour. Heavy Duty adjusted his sight picture and traversed, laying on the next target and blinking away stars. “Fire,” said Thunderwing. Heavy Duty squeezed the trigger and whooped at the flash of impact. The T-55 disappeared behind the crest. “Sheeeit,” spat Heavy Duty. “God damned reactive armour.” Hearing Thunderwing talking quickly into the radio, he took control of the tank, tapping Switch Gears[50] sitting beside him. “Take us forward.” Switch Gears revved the engine, backed off the crest, swung left under Heavy Duty's direction, and stopped. He accelerated over the crest and aimed for the now-empty ridgeline. Heavy Duty took a quick glance around, seeing Cold Front and Major Storm’s tanks moving alongside, under the cover of the support element. He peeked his head out the turret and caught a flash of light from the flank. Frostbite’s[51] tank shuddered, one track torn off by a HEAT shell. Frostbite’s turret slewed over, cracked, and simultaneously let rip a 200-round burst from the coaxial machine gun. Heavy Duty's expression went grim as he resumed his sight picture. Sideswipe[52] skidded his APC to a halt alongside the flipped Mudbuster. He took in the on-going firefight and tossed a pair of smoke grenades to provide some cover from view. Stretcher[53] jumped from the rear and ran to the vehicle, wincing at the sound of Crank Case's screams. "Good news," Stretcher shouted. "I got an airway!" "Screw you," screamed Crank Case. "Get me the hell out of here." Sideswipe knelt over Sneak Peak, lying motionless a dozen yards from the vehicle. His chest moved slightly, and Sideswipe exhaled in relief as a felt the pulse. He applied a neck brace, lowered Sneak Peak into the recovery position, and turned to help Stretcher. The two medics examined the vehicle, exchanging worried glances. "Gonna need a cutter," said Sideswipe, running back to the APC. "Talk to me Crank Case," said Stretcher, leaning into the wrecked vehicle. "Where does it hurt?" "Every-god-damn-where!" "That's good," replied Stretcher, wrapping a neck brace around Crank Case. "How the hell is that a good thing you quack?" "Means your neck isn't broken," said Stretcher, running his hands over Crank Case to assess for bleeding. His hands came away wet and red. Stretcher glanced up at the Sideswipe, looking for the best place to start cutting. Stretcher pointed to part of the frame and mouthed a word. "Hurry." ___ 49 Short-Fuze (v1) G.I. The Ride Around Frusenland
__________________________ Major Storm ducked his head into the back of the APC ambulance. Stretcher shifted his ophthalmoscope to Cannonball's[55] other eye. "You look fine," said Stretcher to Cannonball. "I told you I was fine. I've had truck crashes that were more violent than that. And I didn't have any problem smokin' the SPG[56] that caught us." "And I told you I don't care about bravado and I'll break your arm if necessary in order to check up on you." "You try it!" said Cannonball with a grin, pocketing a bag of painkillers. He touched Sneak Peak’s fist on his way out of the ambulance. “Take care, bro.” Storm clapped Cannonball on the shoulder. "Good shooting." He stepped past Stretcher to the Crank Case's litter. "How's he doing?" Storm asked, taking in the backboard, neck brace leg splint and packed dressings. "He's out right now. Nothing internal, but he's concussed, cracked vertebrae, broken ribs, leg, flash burns. He won't be dancing anytime soon," said Stretcher. "Sneak Peak’s the lucky one. Pulled most of his muscles and a whole lot of scrapes but nothing permanent. We stayin' here long?" Storm looked through the trees, catching glimpses of a dozen Joes pounding sections of tank track together. He took a quick look at the sky, mercifully clear of UAVs. "Don't plan on it." "'K. We checked out the crews of the tanks that took hits. They got their bells rung, but nothing some Tylenol can't cure." Storm wound his way through the trees and looked at the length of track laid out on the ground and at Avalanche and Cannonball torqueing the nuts on the replacement road wheels taken from behind the back deck. Beside them, Clutch worked on the damaged Mudbuster. “How’s she looking?” asked Storm. “Well,” replied Clutch, “the headlight fluid needs topping up and the muffler bearings are shot. Parts and labour will run ya ‘bout $1,500. Will that be cash or credit?” Storm rolled his eyes. “No, seriously.” “I can get her back on the road for this op, but really, it should be scrapped soonest. The frame is twisted, the roll bar's compromised, bodywork cut away from the driver's side, though that's cosmetic. Front driver-side suspension will take the longest to fix.” Clutch took a glance at the progress of the tank repairs, put down his tools and manned the winch on the Road Toad. Dodger barked directions to line the Road Toad up with the crippled Mauler, reeling out the cable to connect to the track. "Stand back," said Dodger, smacking a hand into Storm's chest. "These things never go right on soft dirt." Clutch and Frostbite shouted directions at each other, lining up the crippled Mauler with the track, ready to be pulled over the running gear. Avalanche[57] creeped the tank forward and Joes’ muscles strained as they lifted the end of the heavy track over the sprocket. “How about Heavy Duty’s fire control system?” Storm asked, pointing to the other damaged tank. “One thing at a time,” muttered Dodger, keeping a close eye on the Mauler. "Well, keep it up," Storm said, returning the smack across Dodger's shoulders. The ornery sergeant didn't even glance back. Storm pushed through the sumac grove and found Rapid Fire leaning over the Smokescreen’s engine, checking a dipstick. “You’re moving one short,” Storm said. “Go confirm our river crossing and secure the near bank.” ___ 55 Cannonball (v1) G.I. The Ride Around Frusenland
__________________________ Rapid Fire stared at the raging river, absolutely nonplussed. He took another look at the map, which showed a small creek. "Toss n Cross ain't gonna cut this one," said Rollbar. "I wouldn't even expect this in the spring runoff," said Rapid Fire, scratching his head. "I have a theory," offered Rollbar, pointing at the map. "I bet someone blew the dam." "Well whatever happened, we need to find a way across." “You wanted to avoid the obvious route, but the bridge a couple of klicks downstream seems the only option.” *** “Well?” asked Storm. Tollbooth[58] and Hardtop[59] wiped thick mud from their clothes, having waded back from the far side of the bridge. “The footings will hold for our crossing,” said Hardtop, “though they’re being eroded by the water. The abutments have all but washed away. We’re really stretching the limits of that BDV.[60] ” “We’ll get across,” added Tollbooth, “though don’t expect to use it on the way back.” Clutch and Dodger wrestled the last crate of spare parts from their APC, stacking it beside a pile of ammo crates[61] and the detached Road Toad, the partially repaired Mudbuster still attached, and fuel trailer. “Man you guys are slow,” jabbed Armadillo, finishing his inspection of his APC’s propellers. Clutch flashed him the finger as he bent to check his own marine drive. “Still clear?” Dodger asked Rapid Fire, controlling his drone over the far bank. Rapid Fire nodded, glancing up as the two APCs edged into the water to secure the far bank. He looked over his shoulder at the tanks, scanning the far bank, ready to provide covering fire. Out of sight, he knew that the Equalizer and Brawler were providing cover from aerial surveillance or attack. Clutch wrestled with the wheel of the APC as the fat tires dug into the mud, feathering the gas to give the tires a chance to grip. The current fought the tail of the APC, threatening to pull it downstream. He blinked sweat from his eyes, applying more throttle. Dodger clutched the dash, holding his breath as the APC lurched forward, water streaming down its sides as it fought its way up the bank. He took a quick glance to the side, measuring his progress against Armadillo. The APCs pulled onto dry land simultaneously and Clutch snorted, spat out a broken toothpick and pulled a fresh one from his breast pocket. “Thought I was gonna have to give you a push,” he shouted to Armadillo, parked at the top of the bank. Armadillo’s jaw clenched and he spun the wheel, accelerating and pulling into the closest approximation of a covered position as the terrain allowed. Barricade jumped down, ran a dozen yards from the vehicle and threw himself into the prone position, covering his arcs. On the near bank, Steam Roller moved the Bomb Disposal Vehicle to the edge of the water, lapping over the abutment. He dropped the dozer blade, pushing up a wall of dirt. Eyeing his work, he reversed, lowered the scoop and pulled up a mess of mud, sloshing it into the eroded surface. He backed away as Tollbooth drove over the jerry-rigged approach and onto the platform, slowly crossing. Reaching the end, he extended his bridge, spanning the washed out abutment. He crossed, pulling up parallel to the APCs, watching the front until the tanks pulled off their positions, crossed the bridge and pushed out a kilometre. “Better go back and load up those stores,” Armadillo called to Barricade. ___ 58 Tollbooth (v1) G.I. The Ride Around Frusenland
__________________________ Recoil crawled backwards down the slope, rolled onto his back and passed his notebook to Rapid Fire. "Looks good," said Rapid Fire, studying the sketch of the position and the grids of the confirmed Borovian positions around the fuel farm. He reached for his radio to send a contact report. Steeler, Thunderwing, Dodger and Storm looked at the map as Storm drew in some arrows and symbols. "No fire support for this one," Storm said. "The Equalizer stays back along with the APCs. We'll do a pincer movement - the Maulers under Thunderwing attack from the south, and the overwatch vehicles, including the Brawler in the direct-fire role, under Steeler attack from the west. Rapid Fire will shift his det to the far side to screen for a counter-attack. Make sure Armadillo is ready to suck those fuel tanks dry without delay. Based on past experience we can expect artillery on that position within twenty minutes of overrunning it." *** The Mauler's cannon cracked and Cold Front snarled in satisfaction as, rolling straight through the cloud from the muzzle blast, he saw a BTR 60 explode. Three more black pillars of smoke dotted the objective area, as the other BTRs were destroyed in the near simultaneous salvo. "HEAT, trench, FIRE!" he said into his mic, laying the gun onto a fire pit with a stunned Borovian Marine reaching for an RPG. Back Stop[62] hit the ammo selection button, heard the autoloader slide in a round from the carousel, and squeezed the trigger. "On the way!" A dirty black cloud of smoke and mud obscured the flash of impact. Back Stop was already traversing, firing the co-ax machine gun at troops running to battle positions. "Come left, fill in those trenches," Cold Front said to Heavy Metal,[63] who made the minor adjustment to the steering yoke, shimmying the tank over the edge of a pair of trenches, collapsing the sides and burying the occupants. Pinging rattled the turret and Cold Front slewed the big gun. "Dishka!"[64] he shouted, as Back Stop hit the trigger and fired a 50-round burst of 7.62mm fire into the heavy machine gun, silencing it. "Alright Heavy Metal - punch it!" said Cold Front, feeling the Mauler buck under him as Heavy Metal accelerated hard, clearing the objective by 1500m and adopting a fire position to cover likely counter-attack approaches. Back Stop swung the gun back and forth, alternating between the powerful day sight and the thermal sight. Cold Front cracked his turret hatch and looked back at the fuel storage site. Armadillo and Barricade had already driven their APC with the now-empty fuel trailer and empty 55-gallon drums[65] in the back. They quickly unreeled hoses, transferring fuel. Armadillo bent to examine a few of the corpses and picked up a PKM, a few PPSh-41 submachine guns and a few boxes of ammo. He tossed them in the back of the APC and checked on the fuel tanks. Cold Front glanced up, seeing Rapid Fire’s drone pass overhead. He drummed his fingers on the top of the turret, taking frequent glances through binoculars at possible approaches and checking his watch. "Platoon of BTRs approaching from east," came Rapid Fire's voice over the radio. Cold Front watched the drone adjust course and checked his map, jotting down the contact. "Bypass south," came Storm's voice over the radio. "All elements move now." Cold Front backed the tank off the position, swung south, and fell into the rear of the short column, breathing easier as they put distance between themselves and the fuel storage site. "Picking up incoming air movement," came Rampart's voice on the radio. "Treeline left," barked Cold Front, and Heavy Metal swung the tank in that direction, heading straight for the cover of trees, backing into the mess of alders and spruce. ___ 62 Backstop (v1) G.I. Missed a day somehow? Are the Wolverines with Storm and the Quickstrike? Is that the Security Element or the Command vehicles?

Wolverines are with Steeler (the XO) & the Quickstrike in the overwatch/security element. Maulers are under Thunderwing. Storm is in his own Mauler, and drives around wherever he wants!
