Can you do cross overs?

So, I'm thinking of writing a short series of fanfics as a side story to a Transformers story I'm doing, with a good chunk of the cast made up of GIJoe characters. Basically, I need research materials; any recommendations?

I was intrigued the notion in the comics of Cobra Island becoming a recognized nation and one of my ideas had them being involved in an alternate history version of the Rhodesian Bush War and a subsequent war in South Africa.

Well there are some logical character fits: Bludd, Tomax & Xammot, Wild Weasel. The use of foreign mercenaries also opens possibilities, as does tactical conduct of the campaign (I borrowed Fire Force tactics for a story a while back). The politics will be tricky to navigate, between white supremacists and various Communist-inspired groups.

What would be a decent non-Cobra reason for the forming of the Joe Team?

Upheaval in another country? Big stakes? A different faction at play?

In Chuck Dixon's IDW series, when the Joes were being formed, they had no knowledge of Cobra. I believe Hawk formed them to take on other terrorist threats.

Are you asking because you want to write a story? If so, try starting by picking a single character you want to write about, and a single location you want to write about. Then build an appropriate threat, and an appropriate team.

For example, if you really like Law, and you want to write about East Asia, then perhaps you could build a counter-Triad or -Yakuza team. If you like Alpine and the Rockies, then build a counter-militia team. If you like Airtight and want to write about the Bikini Atoll, then build a counter-radioactive-mutant-insect team.
