April 14th, 1865, Abraham Lincoln is assassinated at Ford's theater in Washington DC. He becomes the first president to be assassinated. However, many people fail to realize that the plot was much bigger. Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William H. Seward were to be assassinated at the same time as Lincoln, however both plots failed. The nation was in a deep state of mourning. The nation would never be the same.
” President Johnson, we must do something in order to protect you, as well as protect future Presidents.” ”I understand this, General. However, Booth was killed just a few days later. The threat is no more.” ” You don't understand, Sir. This is bigger than just a few men. These men were part of a larger, more sinister group. Had they succeed in their plot they could have taken over the entire Union.” ” General, I believe you're overreacting.” ” Mr. President, every man who has been linked to the assassination was found with a note that read 'Long Live the Cobra'. We're not quite sure who or what the Cobra is. But if left as is, you are not safe, Mr. President. Your bodyguards cannot be trusted. Lincoln trusted his and it cost him his life. I have in place a group of men that we can use to find who or what the Cobra is. These men are highly trained, the best if the best. I assure you that you will be safe if you authorize me to use them.” ”I feel you're overreacting, General. However, this country cannot suffer this kind of pain again. Let me meet these men firsthand. Then I shall decide if they are needed.”

Good premise. Just finished reading Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter which basically put Vampire into where you have Cobra.

Interesting. Makes me think of the Amazing Screw-On Head. Any plans on taking this further, or is this just an idea planted to see who starts making customs?

A few days later the general meets with President Johnson again. This time he has a motley group of characters with him.
” President Johnson, this is the group of men that I have personally hand picked. Each one has specific traits and specialties. They all have worked extensively with the Union, however a trace of their existence will never be found. I have used them for many missions and they have never failed. We have been over the Cobra evidence and they feel they can put an end to it before it begins.” ”A very unique group you've assembled here, General. How do I know I can trust them?” ” You trust me with your life, Mr. President. I trust these men with my life. I would not let them this close to you had I not trusted them.” ” With everything that has happened, I'm not sure who I can trust. However I know I can trust you. So tell me, who are these men and what can they do?” ” This man here is called Flint. He has been in the military his whole life. He is a natural born leader. With my help, he faked his death in order to lead this team. To his right is Snake Eyes. He is second in command. Not much is known about his past but judging by his training, he spent some time in Japan. He prefers hand to hand combat over muskets so he will be cheap to maintain.” Both men share a chuckle over this as the men were constantly reminded to safe ammunition due to the high cost. ” This large negro is named Roadblock. He was raised a slave in Northern Georgia. His massive size earned him his nickname. He is one of the few men that can accurately fire a gatling gun. But more importantly he can move it. The gentleman smoking the tobacco in the back is Wild Bill. There's not a man alive who can out duel him. He's got the fastest hands East of the Mississippi and can lead calvary anywhere you can imagine. Lastly, the Cherokee man is Spirit. He knows the land better than any man who has walked this country. His family has lived here for generations. If he wants to find you, you cannot hide as Spirit will speak with nature. You cannot hide from nature. I have others out in the Union in various states, looking for any sign of turbulence. But these men right here have made it their mission to seek the Cobra threat and destroy it.” ”I have faith in your team, General. But I'm not sold on the threat of the Cobras. It's been a pleasure meeting you gentleman. The main thanks you for your service, past and present. General, what is their first assignment?” ”Mr. President, their mission has already began. They will leave for Ford's Theater at sunrise. The Cobra uprising will be dealt with.”

The team leaves for Ford's Theater on horseback. Wild Bill leads the way with the team following closely behind. They arrive at the theater and tie their horses up. They head inside the now closed theater. They're the first to enter since the assassination. They head up stairs towards the Presidential box. The seat in which Lincoln sat still has blood drops upon it. The men look around for a bit before Spirit finds something.
” Flint, please look at this.” Spirit points to a piece of fabric that has been torn on a nail on the balcony edge. ” This red fabric is very exotic. I have never seen this fabric. It is not from this land. It must have torn off when Booth jumped. Where would he acquire such an exotic piece of clothing?” ” He was a stage actor, Spirit. He had access to many different wardrobes.” Flint said as he pointed down to the dressing rooms. ” Perhaps. But why use such an exotic fabric?” The men keep looking around for a bit when Wild Bill comes running in. ” Guys, I reckon y'all need to follow me. Feller out here either has some information or has been possessed by somethin'.” The men head outside where a sharply dressed man is waiting. The man seems distraught. ” How you doin', Sir? The name's Flint. My partner here says you have some info.” ” It's not safe out here. Mind if we go inside?” The men gather and head inside a building across the street. They sit at a large round table, each man eager to hear the stranger's story. ” The name's John Ford. That's my theater across the street. Mr. Booth was a long time friend of mine. I don't believe he would ever harm anybody. But someone did want to harm him.” ” Why do you believe that?” Flint asked with puzzled look on his face. ” He was a very wealthy man. He attracted a lot of attention, both good and bad. Few weeks ago he had said someone tired to kidnap him. Then I didn't hear from him again until the night he supposedly shot the president. Problem is it doesn't add up. Nobody had seen him for days. Nobody seem him enter the theater. They say they saw him jump after the killing but who is to say it was him? Couldn't it have been someone else?” ” So you think someone tried to frame Mr. Booth?” ” Now I can't say that or the law will have my head. All I'm saying is I have my doubts.” Flint pulls out the piece of red fabric from his jacket pocket. ” Have you ever seen this? Any of your actors have this is their wardrobe?” Ford examines the fabric, holding it up, inspecting it closely. ” No sir, this ain't from nobody round here. This fabric is some of the finest silk I've ever felt. This stuff would cost a fortune.” ” Thank you, Mr. Ford. Your time and help is very much appreciated.” The men leave the table and head outside to their horses. They saddle up and begin to ride. ” You think that fella was telling the truth Flint?” ” I've got no idea, Roadblock. But it sure raises some interesting questions.” ” Where to now, Flint?” Wild Bill asks as he puts his hat back on. ” Bryantown in Maryland. We've got an appointment with Dr. Mudd.”

The group packed up and began to head for Bryantown, Maryland. Samuel Mudd had allegedly helped Booth with the planning but had also helped set Booth's broken leg (which he suffered jumping from the balcony to the stage after assassinating the President).
After a few hours the men came to a small bridge. It was barely large enough for them to ride side by side. On the other side of the bridge was a small gap between large trees and foliage. As Wild Bill led them across, a shot rang out. Horses jumped, nearly knocking the riders off. A few more shots rang out. The men immediately dismounted the horses and ducked below the bridge walls. ” Where are the shots coming from?” Flint yelled out to the others as he pulled his dual Colt 1848 revolvers from their holsters. ”I can't see, Sir. I'm pretty sure they be in the bushes” Roadblock yelled back as he got ready to aim his Burnside Carbine. A few more shots ring out. Snake Eyes grabs a mirror from inside his coat pocket and holds it over the wall. He waits for the next shot to go off. A couple seconds later two more shots go off. Snake Eyes stands up and hurls a throwing star towards the spot in which he seen the muzzle blast. He quickly ducks back down. A loud gargle is heard as the man's throat is pierced. He attempts to scream but collapses on the way to his death. The men aren't sure how many are still left in the bushes but they knew they still had work to do. Spirit, seeing an opening, jumps down into the river, bow in hand. He attempts to flank the men from the outside. One of the soldiers notices Spirit climbing from the river banks. He takes aim but misses and has to reload. Spirit seizes the opportunity and loads an arrow into the bow. He pulls it back and releases the string. The arrow strikes the soldier's abdomen, immediately dropping him. The soldiers turn towards the commotion so the team jumps at their chance. Wild Bill pulls his revolvers and begins firing into the bushes. Screams are heard as he unleashes round after round. He drops down to reload and Flint takes over. Flint begins firing as bodies keep dropping. Snake Eyes runs to the other side of the bridge and begins slashing wildly. Limbs start flying, men are screaming. Roadblock quickly follows and begins firing at point blank range. The blast nearly blows the troops in half. The men look around and it appears everyone has been neutralized. The men regroup to make sure everyone is ok. The dust clears and bodies lay all over the ground. The men count 14 dead troops. ” Who are these guys, Flint?” ” No clue, Wild Bill. The blue uniforms look like Union but these guys surely aren't friendlies.” Roadblock looks down at the weapons the men are holding. ” These guns ain't Union. They look like they from Europe. Nothing that we would be using round here.” ” What is that on their shoulders? I've never seen those patches before.” Flint leans down and tears the patch off the sleeve. ” It's a picture of a serpent. These guys must be part of the Cobra movement. How did they know we would be coming this way? And just how many of these guys are out there, Wild Bill?” ” I'm not sure, Flint. But this doesn't look good.”

The men ride for a long while, mostly trying to figure out who the troops were and how they knew they would be there. They all had different opinions but nobody had a definite answer. After a while they reach the jail at Bryantown, in which Samuel Mudd was being held in.
” You guys stay here, Wild Bill and I will go in and try to get some info from him” Flint said as he dismounts his steed. The two men walk into the jail and speak with the Sheriff. ” How ya doing Sheriff? My name is Flint, this here's Wild Bill. We've been told you have Dr. Mudd in custody. Would you be ok if we have a few words with him? ”I reckon you could but I don't quite know who you boys are.” ” We're detectives from Washington. We've been sent by the Sheriff to do some investigating into Lincoln's murder.” ” Well you boys are welcomed here. Just don't be starting nothing. I'll toss you boys out if you create a ruckus.” ” Don't worry about that, Sir. It should just take a few minutes.” The Sheriff leads them back to the cell which houses Mudd. Wild Bill and Flint have a seat directly across from Mudd. ”Dr. Mudd, we're here from Washington. We just want to ask you a few questions.” Mudd doesn't answer. He looks Wild Bill up and down. He quickly notices Wild Bill's Confederate calvary hat. ”I could take you out, you Confederate piece of shit” Mudd says as he spits on Wild Bill's boots. ” Settle down, Mudd. We need to ask you about Booth. You've met with him several times. Did he seem different this last time?” Flint asks as Wild Bill's cleans the spit from his boot. Mudd.takes a more serious demeanor. ” He wasn't right. He was wearing a luxurious red hood. Booth didn't dress like that. He didn't like to stand out. He hated being famous so he tried to blend in most of the time. Perhaps he was going crazy. Last couple times we met he said someone was trying to kidnap him. Maybe that's why he had the red hood on. He didn't mentioned being kidnapped this time though. Maybe it was the pain from his broken leg. It's too bad he got killed. Probably could've learned a lot more by actually talking to him.” ” Was there anything else out of the ordinary?” ”I treated him in my spare room. The curtains were open to let the light in. But Booth didn't want that. I told him I couldn't set his leg if I couldn't see it. He finally gave in. But the weird thing was as the sun hit his leg, I swear on everything that's sacred, his leg started turning blue. It wasn't from anything I was doing. I didn't want to say anything as I tried to concentrate on setting his leg but I couldn't help but stare at his leg.” ” That's interesting, Dr. Mudd. It doesn't really make much sense but hopefully it helps us out. We appreciate your help, Dr.” ” No problem, Mr. Flint. I hope you guys find what you are looking for.” The men walk out trying to figure out what Mudd was talking about. It didn't make a whole lot of sense. Who would want to kidnap Booth? Was he actually kidnapped? If so, who murdered Lincoln? It seems like every answer just created even more questions. ” Saddle back up boys. We gotta hit the Garrett Farm. I'm willing to bet that Booth didn't die there. Something just isn't as it seems.” ” How would he not be dead, Flint? He was shot and killed up there.” ” I'm not sure why, Roadblock, but I'm positive we're gonna find something there. I just know it.”
