He taps the filter of his cigarette on a worn red shield. It's chipped, pockmarked, and scratched. He won't remove his mask, or at least hasn't- I won't ask him to. He leans to the side of the ragged old couch, and takes a deep breath.
I don't know why this all happened, so don't bother to ask. I can only say how it happened. Yes, my organization had absolute zero oversight in parts of the R&D. They used to say the batshit looney "genius" down there was actually called "Mindbender". He cooked up a lot of wild shit. So you knew about the inhumane and unethical experiments? Look, most of the guys who voulenteered weren't the best guys. Threats to our way of life, or just sick criminals who managed to show their true colors. We may not have been entirely "clean" in what we did, but that didn't mean you could be a rapist or a crack dealer, either. We all joined this outfit because we knew it was a "Private Military". We knew we'd be taken care of, and our skills would be put to use. Once you did your Trooper Time and passed the qualifications, you got your VEO (Vipers, Eels, Other) status. Then you could qualify for other parts. That's what made it better than the US Military for me- what you were good at, you got to do for a living. It doesn't matter who you work for, you just can't be some scumbag and then expect to function alongside professionals, man. So most of the experiments involved undesireables. You bet your ass. Daddy Cobra wasn't all about throwing troops away. Sometimes, if it was slight, you went and built B.A.T.s. Other times, you had to donate a skin graft or do something pretty painful with no side effects. If you warranted death- they used you. Tell me about "Compound C". Well, what the docs said, after they had the safety to look into it, was that it wasn't really a "Compound", but a synthetic bioengineered bacteria. The kook down there thought that it would be great if we could keep fighting after we went down. Basically, every trooper carries this stuff- rumor has it, he wanted us to all believe it was an advanced painkiller and stabilizing agent. The bacteria was "programmed" with the very basic mission data. So, just like the BATs, we'd get up and keep fighting as long as our brain stem was intact. It didn't work. Yes, it totally worked. And here we are with me in a prison cell, and America is safe thanks to G.I. Joe. No, jackass, it didn't. Apparently, the stuff couldn't comprehend the "programming", it just knew how to take over the brain stem and set the dead guy out on a rampage. And it was infectious as hell. Biting or any sort of the bacteria in your bloodstream was instant infection. It started out at one of our "Springfield" designates. Contrary to the stories, it isn't a town named Springfield, it's the designation for a Cobra safe zone that just happens to be a small town. It's how we were able to hop all over the country and resupply. Beneath some of these towns are entire underground complexes- just like under a Terrordrome. Terrordromes are just the top, underneath is where all the serious shit is. Well, rather than use one of the more "critical" areas, they chose a small Springfield. No idea how the hell it got out. Most likely, the Alpha infected some Haz-Viper and he didn't realize it. Alphas? Primary infected, or latter stage infected pure strains- the infected could run, climb, or regenerate its limbs. Nasty, too- some of them just grew massive bone spurs, others had these fanged tentacles... thank god most of them hit decomposition before they got there. And this was when you were sent to respond? We do Urban Warfare, so we were sent to "silence" the place assess and bring back any data and High-Value personnel. Keep in mind this didn't mean "women and children". When we got there, it was chaos. The sleepers there did their job and cut communication, but someone made the cry for help. While we were in, the National Guard was being overwhelmed. How did you survive? Well, we were trained to use the terrain. Use the structures. It's no different than the jungle or desert, this is just man-made. We went high, we evaded, we found an extraction point. He takes a pause... The extraction never came. We hunkered down and started thinking about our own survival. The shield is a great thing. We all knew you could crack a skull with it, or use it to charge through a mob- and that's what we did. We made a small Phalanx, kept our shots to a minimum, and pushed through the smaller groups. On top of that, we always had a tendency to use these things as weapons lockers. He flips it around- inside he has a small tactical tomahawk, a bolo machete, an extra pistol, and several spare magazines. That came in handy. Never had to reach behind you. On top of that, the uniform is naturally more durable than normal BDU's- with the cable being pretty rough, they built these things to resist tears and abrasions. Hard to gnaw through it. We ditched our visored helmets- things get blood and brains and goo all over them, you can't see a thing. We go with the open face- it covers more of your neck, anyway. Plus, it's easier to breathe. He gestures toward his gear, allowing me to take note. After that, we got comm out there with other Cobra agents. We set rendezvous points- meeting one or two cells at a time. Exchanging data, trying to re-arm. We had weapons caches like you wouldn't believe, but most of it was useless. 'Nades were a waste of time and we found out the hard way that having one of the infected grab one was a bad thing. Broke down belted ammo, prioritized weapons, went with the basics- 5.56 and 9mm, the most plentiful if we had to scavenge more. You managed to reclaim entire towns this way. The major cities were flooded, and we didn't have cells there- it would have been way to easy to find us. When we started clearing cities, the people got behind us. It was great. It was almost like we were heroes- hell, we were heroes. All bullshit aside, everyone wanted to survive. We could sort it out later. The Techno-Vipers, man... those guys weren't plentiful enough, but they pulled 14 hour shifts working. Their engineering skills got the roads cleared and the machines running. Hell, they got the basic infrastructure back on- power, water, you name it. The Tele-Vipers kept comm going. Hell, they were the reason we were able to make contact in the first place. We were able to contact one another with these guys, so we were able to bring more troops in. The Range-Vipers came in really handy. Those guys knew how to forage, hunt, and live off the land. Out in the isolated areas, they survived for months. Then they came back and taught the civilians how to survive. You know, there's a photo of some town up in the northwest, where the Snow Serpents are drinking hot chocolate and watching kids play on their snowboards? Never thought you'd see that. Vipers were just all-around great. They gave the people a sense of security- they looked mean, tough, and they patrolled the streets. We did the same. We searched houses for survivors. We quelled riots and uprisings. We knew the ins and outs of urban areas, so we were naturals and finding all the little nooks and crannies of a city. And now? Well, we keep things the way they are. Funny thing, we have no contact from high command. No one seems to care. We did this. He laughs. It's funny. The moment the Cobra brass bolts, we save the world and we are practically in charge. It's hilarious how an accident got them more than their cloak-and-dagger efforts or kooky plans. |

Really cool read. Reminds me a lot of World War Z. Now you just need customs of all these guys and a dio story and we are gold. Again, really good stuff.

Awesome story - sort of like an alternate World War Z. If this had been the set-up for the new GI Joe movie, then I think there would be no fears of another ROC.

I'd never publish this, because the style was the same as WWZ's (and most other oral history/personal interview/account books).
I now want to army build Zombie Vipers. |
