OK, so, I do a lot of stuff in 3D and have been doing stuff over the long break from school. I'm currently unemployed so I've had plenty of time to kill, so I did one of these a day for the past week or so.
Everything’s modeled in 3D Max and is to scale with each other, I'm OK at basic texturing and most of these used architectural materials to simulate flat/ gloss, semi gloss paint, glass, etc. Lighting is a skylight with ray-traced shadows with only 1 pass, to keep rendering time fairly reasonable. These were done just for fun and practice, so I'd go pick something from my shelf, bring it to my PC and get to work. A lot of people do guns, faucets, computer mice, lamps and stuff like that for practice but I've always found that stuff kind of boring. Anyway, I hope you enjoy them! The Group shot took about 45 minitues to render on my machine and consists of about 600k polygons (quads). I'm very happy with how it came out, the shadows were totally worth the extra rendering time. The HISS tank was the first one I did. It was only met to be a one-off (way to ride out a rainy day), but I really enjoyed it, so I decided to follow it up with the CLAW and then this became my thing for the next week or so. The HISS really set the pace for how I was going to do these models, I made very few embellishments to make it a bit more realistic, but still faithful to the toy (for example: there’s a little tread clearance and no roller wheels on the bottom). The other details are all there, but I kind of hit a wall when it was time to figure how far to take the geometry (I did panel lines, but not the rivets). I t is rigged for animation:The canopy and cannons elevate and the turret rotates. Oh and heres a Crimson HISS for fun! Last edited by spot138; 10-28-2011 at 04:41 PM.. |

I don't have a vintage one so the CLAW is based off the 25th mold. I gave it the four standard CLAW missiles. Rigged: wings extend, Handles and ailerons swing, and air-brakes deploy.
Flight pod. Man this thing was way more complex then I thought it would be! I never really appreciated the level of detail in these things until I did this. Cannon / handle rotates, flight stick pulls forward, canopy opens. Air Chariot, I'm not 100% satisfied with it, no matter what kind of smoothing routines I used it still came out a little “edged” looking for me. I still like it though and the head just came out awesome! Oh, the head turns and the jaw opens. FANG. I cant believe I forgot to put it in the group shot!!! This things oozing detail That engine was especially challenging. Nose cannon move around, flight stick works and rotors spin, this was the hardest model of the lot. Ferret, I'm happy with it, but I don’t have a Ferret so I had to use the Snake Trax for reference. I'm happy with it, but sure wish I had the old one around because I can tell there's something off, especially with the rocket tube. MMS / SMS pretty easy overall, but the devils in the details, and this things covered in them. On the plus side if I just paint it green, I got a Joe piece out of the way! SNAKE, Another tough one. Actually just the body was tough, like the flight pod there are far too many small details in it that I've never really noticed before. Added another group shot with Fangs. What program are you doing this in? They look pretty good. I just started modeling a hiss in revit the other day to later take into an animation in 3D max but if you've already got one made maybe we can collaborate on something down the road. Are you rendering with mental ray?

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like them.
For willworkfortoys and anyone else whos wondering, I made all of these in autodesk 3ds Max 9, with the default scanline renderer, with reactor lighting, single pass Raytraced shadows (for performance sake- my machines nothing special) and depth of field atmospherics. |
