A wonderful character from 1983, this is Doc. Sadly the character's popularity never really stuck, and he was killed off in Marvel continuity before the book ended. Although Doc's niece (Doc, or Doc II to me) had a 2007 GI Joe Collectors' Club figure, Doc never got a proper Mainline Hasbro figure until after the 25A era started.
Doc's uniform is classic. I just added a few more pouches and more medical gear. Last edited by Clockwise; 10-28-2023 at 04:20 PM.. |

I've always been a fan of Doc. I always liked how his uniform incorporated some of his medical gear.
A couple of interesting things about Doc, at least from what I understand: 1: His head sculpt was originally supposed to be Short-Fuze, which explains why Short-Fuze always wore glasses in the comics. 2: There is a mistake on his file card with his Secondary MOS. Given his description as a pacifist and his rank, Doc should be listed as a Chaplain (a non-combatant), not a Chaplain's Assistant (which is an armed body guard for chaplains). Also, Chaplains are assigned an officer's rank, which would help explain Doc as a Captain. 3: Apparently Doc carries two different flare guns. He comes with like the flare mortar, but also strapped as a side-arm is a pistol with either a flare or a grenade(?) Great job on the artwork. Jason |

Jason I might be misremembering, but there are several alternate Joe heads that Hasbro didn't use for the '82 figures, for cost-savings. The heads were Zap, Short-Fuze, and Breaker. (Sorry, vehicle drivers!). I don't think that SF's head wore glasses. But I'm not 100% on that. |

Thanks, yes, Doc was a great character. There are a few character where the Sunbow and Marvel personalities are identical to me. Doc is one of them. Just a perfect character in every way. A soldier but a pacifist, a doctor and a leader, plus the khaki uniform w glasses? Amazing work by Hasbro.

It's an unpopular theory, but I think Stalker and Doc could've led the Joes better than Duke and Flint. Stalker would've been the field commander and Doc would've been the science officer. Sunbow made him a brilliant man, far beyond a "mere" medic. One of the coolest Joes and I am eagerly awaiting his Classified and S7 Ultimate figures. Your art for him is a bright spot on the day. (And his niece, Carla, was awesome.)

Stalker was the original field commander for most of the early missions. For an early Marvel fan like me, Duke couldn't budge the character out of that spot. Stalker should have been promoted to being an officer above Duke, or at least a reports-only-to-Hawk advisor. Or better still, Stalker should have been rebranded as the top sergeant and Duke could have been the guy filling Stalker's original slot as ranger. Doc gets a half-yes because his orientation towards science over combat- and being a pacifist- wouldn't make him the best choice to command the team. But anything under the science/medicine umbrella within the field of soldiering, Doc's the man. As for Flint, I didn't understand why Hasbro kept interjecting NEW characters as leaders when there were plenty of great and promotable characters already in the team even by 1985. Especially when 1985 when the 1982 figures were cycled out of production (IIFC). Zap, who can fly helicopters, is now the team's warrant officer. (My understanding is that Warrant Officer is usually a few ranks affiliated with helicopter pilots; someone who actually knows please correct me/explain better if you could.). Glad the artwork resonated with you, too. Last edited by Clockwise; 09-25-2023 at 10:33 PM.. Reason: spelling |
