Every Joe #221: Cobra Combat Ninja

A figure from the GI Joe Retaliation toyline, the Cobra Combat Ninja might have been in the movie. But I'm not about to watch that movie again, so I can't say for sure.

They were the movie's Cobra Trooper. The robot head is based on the cybernetic blue ninjas from Hama's IDW run.

I want that Cobra Commander... I think that was a cool look for him..It would make a good looking figure.

The head, at least, was available on one or two of the Retaliation figures, including the 5POA version included with the HISS.

The head was definitely based on the Blue Ninjas of the comics, but I'd also say undoubtedly based on the Gray Fox cyborg ninja from Metal Gear Solid as well.

Just curious, which came first? The Blue Ninja or the Gray Fox?

Well Gray Fox was a cyborg ninja in 1998. This waa in the Playstation game called Metal Gear Solid. It is not a GiJoe game. His first appearance was technically in 1988 in an earlier game called Metal Gear as a regular soldier and there was no such thing as a cyborg ninja in that game.

In GiJoe the Blue Ninjas first appeared in #172 in 2011. Wow, that's not even two years into this run. It was 18 issues into the second half of the series when Billy died. Crazy.
