Every Joe #219: Roadblock (Retaliation continuity)
As I make my way through the list of every Joe character, I find the movies basically a no-go zone. The characters, for the most part, are so mismatched with any previous versions of the same characters that they don't even feel the same. There are some characters that are so far off the mark that they read as different characters to me. Roadblock is one of them. ARAH/Marvel/Sunbow takes on Roadblock were slightly different from each other, but they all felt like the same Roadblock- imposing but mellow, devoted and culinarily artistic. Retaliation's Roadblock, as played by The Rock, just comes off as... The Rock. Super intense, with a dusting of slightly more intense. This isn't to say that The Rock's Roadblock isn't an okay character in its own right. Rather than just ignore this version of Roadblock, it felt so far off base that it deserved its own Every Joe entry. Yes, this is a flawed logic, and I can't defend it. But here we are. It's categorized as a 2012 entry because some of the toys were released before 2013, when the movie was released. It was held back for release to be converted to the then-trendy 3D, if I remember correctly. Last edited by Clockwise; 01-03-2023 at 11:12 AM.. |

Very cool. I don't think there's anything wrong with expanding the portfolio to include the movies. But I agree. Nothing feels Roadblock-y about the Rock's interpretation. I use Retaliationn RB as an entirely separate character, who I've codenamed "Rock Solid". Is a nice figure though.

The writers probably never looked at Hama's filecards.

I didn't have much of a problem with Rock's Roadblock outside of everything saying he was a ninja, and a highly skilled one at that. He's got "Battle Kata", whatever the hell that is.
The ninja crap really did and continues to infect Joe way too much. Even now, the main characters are what - Dawn, Sean, and Snake-Eyes? |

It's interesting to hear how everyone interprets the alternate versions of the characters. For me, it's a lot of head shaking and wondering how they've made three not-GI Joe movies in a row. The "every" part of "Every Joe" means to cover at least one version of every character, from 1982-2009. 2009 isn't arbitrary for me, it's when I stopped collecting. ROC bookended my collection, although I have picked up an occasional first version of a character/figure, including one or two Classified figures. Some of these have been/will be deeply obscure characters, like President Mason from the DIC cartoon. Ridiculously overdone characters, like Snake-Eyes, will just get the one entry and maybe a cameo in background art for other characters. Naturally, I've already ignored my own parameters and done entries for many post-2009 GIJCC figures and a few from IDW. It's a fuzzy edge more than a bright line. The problem with the movies is that there are some characters that might look the part completely, like The Baroness, to the point that differences in personality/character don't matter for a visual project like this. Other characters, like Bruce Willis' General Colton, both look and feel different than the earlier versions, but there's no interest in my part on doing art for them. |

But the longer that car stays stuck, the more ninja and science fiction exhaust comes out the back. (Best mixed metaphor ever!) Josh Blaylock at least potentially had interesting ideas. But his writing lacked any military texture, something necessary for GI Joe. |
