The New Sculpt era didn't provide a standard Cobra Soldier until it almost ended, as a Hasbro online store exclusive... or something confusing like that. Prior to that, 2002's Neo-Viper tried to fill the visual sweet spot between Cobra Solider and Viper backfilled by some standard "super trooper" backstory.
The Neo-Viper wasn't bad, but never caught on with the collectors and fans. They were also brought into the ROC film, where they looked a bit more menacing. I'm generally ignoring the ROC characters as outside the parameters of this project, but I'm might slide the ROC Neo-Vipers in because they're pretty decent. These Neo-Vipers? Not too shabby. Haha, I always wonder how much I would have enjoyed Neo Vipers had I been a kid collecting the line at the time. Like would I have gotten him in every color or would I have gotten annoyed that so many of them kept popping up and been like, stop trying to make Neo Viper’s a thing! It’s not gonna happen!
But seeing them for the first time as an adult, I do enjoy the design. I made a custom of one already and want to do maybe three of the random colors at some point. Really like your take on him in the classic color. Super cool pose and love the helmet design. Then the bright logo sneaking through in the background...just awesome! The shine on the various bits, but especially the belt buckle & pistol are fantastic.

I forgot that there was a Skittle Rainbow of recolors of this figure at the time. At least Hasbro was a bit inventive with them, like the yellow Hornet (Cobra mini jet name?) pilot and another that was a silver grey (no idea what it was a recolor for, maybe the Ringneck?). |

I didn’t realize a lot of those Neo Viper repaints were vehicle drivers. Haha. Always learning something new in your threads! I made the yellow one and never realized that he was associated with a vehicle. I was totally out of the toy aisles during those years so most of it I’ve been familiarized with from toy shows as an adult or YoJoe deep dives as I looked for customs to make.

As far as being pulled into the Classified series, I was amazed that Kamakura was made. So maybe there's hope that a few more NS figures, like Neo Vipers, will get the Classified upgrade? |

Curious to see what unhelmeted head they'd use. Do the Cobra Solider and Cobra Officer in the Classified line have the same base head?
