I'm curious what most of you are thinking on the subject right now, especially those of you that have made the arts your profession. I'm reserving my own opinions for a bit later in the conversation (if, in fact, there is one). I'd like to steer away from the ethics debate surrounding the training of AI models with existing artworks if we can, because that ship has sailed; whether it's right or wrong is no longer relevant- as someone wiser than me once said, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to get permission.
Do you embrace it as a natural evolution of the arts, the way that photography, film, and CG were? Are you concerned about the future of your profession or passion? Has it caused you to consider giving up? Do you have "contingency plans" in place?

Eh, I haven't stressed much about it. I have enough other stresses, so maybe I can't fit any more in ;)
I said before, that AI art (the stuff that I've seen) seems like it was created by an alien cyborg trying to mimic a human. Which often makes it simultaneously funny, frightening, and perplexing - but also sometimes entertaining and kind of novel, in the sense that, "wow, I never would have thought to do that!" So it can be interesting, in that regard.

The one recurring theme I keep considering is that because AI can only steal, pervert and emulate, AI art will never be original.
AI art shall therefore be derivative endlessly. For a long time my friends and I used to laugh about how AI could learn to make art, so our careers were safe. Now I'm not so sure. But everyone better start raising their own food and that includes me. Doesn't matter if you're an artist, things are just going to keep getting worse until we learn what desperation feels like. In that regard we all need a backup plan.

At this point AI is very limited when it comes to style. You can still easily tell an AI image. The technology is not quite there yet. Let's say I'm designing a spaceship. The precision is just not there to do it in AI. Or illustrating a fight scene, there is no subtlety or nuance.
Big companies use AI for spitballing ideas, concept art, mood boards and storyboards, but the stumbling block is that AI images cannot be copyrighted or owned. Professional illustrators are way ahead of everyone. We've been studying and mastering all of the platforms to use at our disposal for things like lighting and layout explorations and complex backgrounds. |

There is a magazine I've been courting for about three years. Their editors know who I am and we have a good social relationship, but it has never turned into a working relationship. They site a preference for photography in general, and to be fair I've never seen an illustration inside.
Illustration is more spendy. Cost is a real consideration so while they've never directly said that, it makes sense. Last month I saw an illustrated cover on their magazine and my first reaction was a mild irritation. Quickly realized it was from Midjourney. Midjourney. Cheaper than a photographer.
