Every Joe #160: Airborne II (Six)
Sky Patrol was introduced in 1990, providing a small crew of characters that Hasbro didn't properly explain as either being paratroopers or pilots, but an odd mix of both. A bit more focus on what exactly these characters did would have helped. All of the characters fell into the "shoulder shrug" category for me at the time, as I'd aged out of the toys and if they appeared in the Marvel run I don't even remember it. It also didn't help that they were semi-lazy recycles of old bodies aside from the (very well done) heads. I have no problem with parts being re-used, but a bit of imaginative mixing and matching creates new recipes not locked into old characters. To top off all of this, Airborne wasn't Airborne. That is to say Six wasn't Talltree. I think it was the first blasphemous time that Hasbro recycled a codename for a different character. To me, this is Airborne II. Moving beyond the lazy name choice made by Hasbro, it's not a bad figure/character. I stuck close to the design, but made a few changes to the uniform so it wasn't just a recolor of a Lift Ticket body. I don't know much about parachutes, but I think the front parachute is the emergency/spare one. Could be wrong about that. Artistically, the suspension lines needed to be in front for this piece. Just for a callback, here's my artwork of the original Airborne, too! Last edited by Clockwise; 12-24-2021 at 11:49 AM.. |

Only Sky Patrol thing I had was the Sky Hawk.
Wasn't Kirk Bozigian away from the line at this point? That would explain all the bad ideas. |

I don't know too much about the internal workings at Hasbro, but the products started to shift in different directions around that time, so it probably was.
HCC788 has talked about that stuff on his youtube channel from time to time. I had a chance to pick up a Sky Raven (I think that's what it was called) for $20 bucks around 2000. I disliked the SP stuff so much then that I had no interest. Oh, well. |

I really thought the Sky Patrol designs were nice. I had Airborne and Altitude. Altitude become one of my favorite figures of that time period. I never owned the original Airborne, and being 11 when the second one came out, it was years before I realized there was an original Airborne. Even then, I thought, how did he go from black hair to blonde? Never realized they had different File names...

The cool thing about the sublines is you could either ignore them or treat them as separate toylines.

Excellent work on both, I love your style!
To me, Air Raid is Airborne - Franklin E. Talltree is on the Air Raid filecard and it is obvious that the name Airborne had a license issue when they released the Sky Patrol set. That was a transition era at Hasbro and they did not do a great job of protecting the property or history.. I like thinking that Airborne had an approved request to change his code name to Air Raid in the last incarnation of Sky Patrol. Still the same character. Not perfect but makes me feel better lol Yo Joe! |

Love this.
I have a soft spot for Airborne II since he was the first figure I ever bought with my own money (slim pickings at K-Mart that day). My cousin had the first Airborne so even at the time I thought it was weird that they had the same code name, but mine was newer and thus cooler... in the mind of an 8-year-old. Over the years he was mostly the defacto co-pilot in my brother's Tomahawk since he had the same outfit as Lift-Ticket. I always thought he looked a bit like Patrick Stewart so he also moonlighted as a young Jean-Luc Picard in various sci-fi battles. In my current Joeverse Six is Sky Patrol's medic so I gave him the codename Airlift.

I'm surprised Hama never had any fun with the name issue in the comic book (again, I don't remember SP popping up in the Marvel run). He could've made it an ongoing gag.
I ignored some of the Tiger Force figures because of the inexplicable hair changes. Duke w chocolate hair, Frostbite as a ginger. Why, Hasbro, why? |
