Yeah, Troy, I'm going to do a BBQ using ROC Flash when I can find him. So far I've done Lifeline, Spirit, and Deep Six. I've done a couple others just for fun. If i had a camera, I'd post pics.

New concepts/filecards: Clockwise, from top left: Kwinn, Cobra Commander, Philip Alexander Rey & Ledger Design notes: - Had a lot of fun making Kwinn. Based it on his first appearance (the arctic parka get-up, and not the "creepy boy scout" look he adopted later). Used a highly modified version of Inuit filmmaker/actor/sculptor Natar Ungalaaq for his face. Replaced the .30 caliber machine gun he was portrayed carrying in the comics with a more practical but still iconic M1 Garand rifle (hey, at least it's still in .30 cal!). - Cobra Commander was partially inspired by the look of the black SDCC-exclusive figure from a year ago. Decided to use his movie real name for his filecard... as the founder of a publicly known company, it would be weird for his name to be a classified secret. Also adopted certain background elements from the Chimera character in Larry Hama's GI Joe: Origins (namely, his background as an ex-SF officer). In my Cobra corporate hierarchy, CC is the Chairman of the board and the primary shareholder, as well as the Chief Global Strategist (a job title popularized by Starbucks founder Howard Schultz... it's basically a way for the company founder/chairman to exercise overall control over his/her company even if he/she no longer holds the CEO/president title). EDIT: the head was taken from a picture posted by a 'tanker of his custom homemade Cobra Commander costume. I want to give credit where credit is due, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name of the poster who made it. - Philip Alexander Rey is my take on Serpentor, although I've freely mixed elements between him and DDP's General Philip A. Rey. My version of Serpentor isn't a clone of history's most intelligent commanders, of course, given my more realistic take on the property. In my version of the character, he's a former Army officer-turned-CEO, a brilliant, charismatic leader beloved by most of his underlings (just like in the comics), but secretly plagued by a grandiose-type delusional disorder (he sincerely believes that he's the spiritual successor of Alexander the Great, and the work he does with Cobra is for the good of the world). - Ledger is based on Admiral Ledger, the CO of the USS Flagg in the early Sunbow cartoons (demoted him to a Commander, and made him the Joe team's XO). I made him a NAVSPECWAR officer instead of a surface warfare officer, and used Richard Marcinko's face for his features. Yeah, I know Marcinko is a controversial figure (a couple of people I know who work with NAVSOC consider him to be a publicity hound and dismiss his published "true-to-life" accounts of the SEAL Teams as romanticized half-truths at best and outright fabrications at worst), but I couldn't resist using his distinct mug for a GI Joe navy officer. More new stuff:
Greer & Sharpe Design notes: - Greer is based on 2007's Doc v2, the niece of the original Doc. Since in my "joeverse," the original Doc is still alive and well, I just went with her surname as her callsign. - Sharpe is based on Colonel Sharpe (albeit my version is a USMC Major) from the Sunbow cartoons -- I think he was the team's commanding officer before they introduced Hawk in the alter cartoons. Bit of trivia for you guys: according to the film's writers, "Colonel Sharp" from 2007's Transformers movie was based on the Sunbow GI Joe cartoon character. Loving the first 4.
Greer and Sharpe, for some reason, just don't seem to be as good as your normal ones. They look 1/2 done. No offense, but something just seems off on them. Really love the take on Rey. The snake skin coat is a great touch. CC is great. LOVE Kwinn. (where's Barrell Roll??)

Hmmm. They look different probably because they were made from relatively low-res "analog" pictures that were scanned in (I used those pictures for particular reasons... Greer was a request to use a particular person's image, whereas Sharpe was from a scanned pamphlet... it's ridiculously difficult to find reasonably clear online images of the USMC officer's "A" Service uniform). I'll leave them as they are for now, until I can come up with a better way to enhance their look without resorting to too much obvious filter use. |

Nice job as usual, Zulu. Love all the "Springfield" references on CC's file card. And using Dick Marcinko's likeness was brilliant. As far as translating your work into plastic, well, some were easy and others, not so much. Spirit was one I really wanted to do after Lifeline, and it was tough coming up with the "right" look for him. Deep Six, on the other hand, was pretty easy.

Awesome job as usual Zulu, I love the way Greer looks like Pam Grier, very cool. Must admit though, I miss seeing these in the filecard thread but your work really does deserve its own thread

You know, Rex Lewis just sounds strange, probably because Rex is just an odd sounding name, sounds like a nickname but it's not.
But Rex is latin for king. So really the name is kind of prophetic for what CC wants.

Loving Serpentor the Most. But CC is equally awesome. They seem to be in roles that make then somewhat equals. CC's Military background is awesome.
I like the additions of Ledger and Sharpe, but are they replacing other guys you've done? Keel-Haul use to have that XO role and I thought you had Flagg in there as well. I'm never sure we were ever told Sharpe was not a Marine. Although the Khaki Uniform isn't standard for any branch is it? Kwinn looks authentic but shouldn't he be bigger? He always seemed to be a monstrosity. But Inuit peoples are traditionally short in stature do to diet and heat preservation. |

The khaki uniform is the service uniform of US Navy officers and chief petty officers (it was also the Army's service uniform until the mid-1980s... which explains why he wore khakis in the 1980s Sunbow cartoons). The Marines' service uniform is a subdued green coat & trouser ensemble with a khaki tie and shirt. I opted to give Sharpe a full service dress to keep his look consistent with how he was portrayed in the cartoons (which was with a coat). |
