"Don't drink the water, it's contaminated." Yeah, I've definitely got to work on it, Zulu. Your plan for the firefighters sounds good, as most firefighters have HAZMAT training and often assist paramedics at accident scenes and the like. Gives Lifeline and co. some back up. Plus, they could be used for SAR ops, since firefighting is more than just "putting the wet stuff on the red stuff".

I'd resigned myself to not including Tracker in my list of Joes for updating. I just wasn't a big enough fan (or a fan at all) of the character to feel like spending the time to craft an updated look for him, and any version I'd make, I felt, would probably just come off as unsatisfactory to the guys who actually like the character (yep, all three of you ). When it came time to re-write the Joe document though, I realized I needed a couple of combatant swimmers to fill out the roster.
I'm no fan of Tracker's original look... outside of the Ninja Force and Mega-Marines/Mega-Monsters, I think he's one of the worst-designed figures from the ARAH period, if you're talking about a guy who's supposed to be in the military (a SEAL at that). Not only did he wear a sports jersey (a pet peeve of mine when it comes to the Joes), he also seemed to be wearing what looked like neon yellow capri pants, knee-high socks, and purple-and-yellow basketball shoes (guess whoever designed him was a Lakers fan). While I normally go out of my way to incorporate obvious elements from the original toy design in my updates, this was a case where I only did so most perfunctorily. I think the updated design moves away from a lot of what made me not like the original ARAH toy, whilst still being somewhat recognizable as the character (if you squint really, really hard, I guess). Also hope you guys like my decision to give him a visor akin to what the original toy had. The one I used for this image is actually based on a working prototype/demostrator of the DNVG (Digital Night Vision Goggles) made by Paulson International. It's designed to be more compact than your typical NVGs (which have to be a certain length to accommodate the image intensifier tube). The DNVG uses onboard proprietary software for image intensification, thus obviating the need for a long tube, and they can actually be worn under, say, a riot helmet's clear face shield. Thanks for looking! |

I like this a lot. A LOT. No squinting was needed to recognize Tracker on my part, perhaps because I remember your first version. I think I preferred the old NVG you gave him, because they were immediately identifiable. That said, I always love hearing about new tech through the Joes (official or fan-made) so in time I'll probably come around.

Glad you dug the Tracker update.
And yeah, I see you saw the Big Lob pic I added to the Photobucket album (surprised you recognized him off the bat, I 'shopped the moustache off of the young 'Nique... I've always had a perceptual disconnect when it comes to recognizing him without his trademark moustache from the 1980s... even now, seeing his recent pics, he still looks "wrong" to me without the 'stache ... I have a similar thing with Larry Bird, they look like totally different people to me without the facial hair I associated with them in their prime). I haven't posted the pic here yet because of Photobucket issues... I know the problem is on their end because even when I clear my browser's cache (and all the temp files on my system), linking to the Big Lob image brings up the old picture that I deleted yesterday (I put up a placeholder using Anthony Njokuani which was in the folder for a few weeks). |

I did spot Njokuani as well, but as an NBA fan who grew up in Atlanta in the 80's and 90's, I spotted 'Nique right away and couldn't wait to say something. :-)

I still get steamed when I remember how he and Dantley were passed over for the "50 Greatest NBA Players" list in 1996 (during the league's 50th anniversary). If a one-dimensional (if otherwordly in skill) gunslinger like Pete Maravich or a consummate role player like Robert Parish gets into the 50 Greatest list, Wilkins and/or Dantley had to be there as well. |

Ugh, don't get me started on the disrespect to Nique's legacy. Seriously. I was having a good day.

Wow. I am just blown away by the amount of work that must go into this. The results are very awesome.

As I'd mentioned previously in the Tracker post, I was looking to add another SEAL/combatant swimmer to my idealized Joe roster. I'd run out of ARAH/Valor vs Venom characters (who were actual or likely SEALs) to use though. Anyway, I decided to update a character from the DDP comics, who was never made into toy form: Mariner (Chief Petty Officer David Adcox) appeared briefly in three issues of DDP's comic. The original character design was largely forgettable (not really a fan of Tim Seeley's work... always thought it carried the things I liked the least about the early "Image Comics house style" and Mark Bagley's work), so I took some liberties in translating it into a more utilitarian appearance: IMAGE deleted, to be updated later I was hesitant to give him a pair of US Woodland/M81 trousers over his wet-suit, but I figured it would be a nod to the improbably blue tiger-stripe pants the character was designed wearing... the SEALs still use US Woodland/M81 camo gear in-theater, although they're supposed to be transitioning to the new Type II (Desert) and Type III (Woodland) Navy Working Uniforms (which really, look just like the Desert and Woodland versions of Canada's CADPAT). Since I'm designing these characters in the circa 2009-2010 setting, I thought US Woodland would be more appropriate. Thanks for looking! Last edited by zuludelta; 04-05-2011 at 07:26 AM.. |
