Love the Cobra Commander Structure. The Viper team leaders. If every team has a Tele-Viper then they are 10 man teams right? I think maybe you could get away with saying there are only one or two teams each of the highly specialized troops. Like the Eels, Alley-Vipers, Maybe even the Snow Serpents. Although maybe you can come up with 3 Eel teams with a similar look, but make one the designated Arctic team, one the Parachute team, and one that serves as the frogman. Ice-Vipers and Lampreys would be out.
You may also consider the Range-Vipers as their own team and switch his position on the squad with a Night-Viper. But that's really just my personal preference. In my Joe-Verse Range-Vipers are Green Beret equivalents, living off the land meshing with the locals. Real Guerrilla Warfare. I remember that issue in Trans-Carpathia where they had the basic Viper squad set up. A SAW-Viper, a HEAT-Viper, and a Frag-Viper. but that was the only glimpse of a great looking Medi-Viper. I so wanted one. I was so glad when they finally made one 15 years later.

Love the Cobra Command ideas Z, the acronyms are spot on and I love the fire team break down. Do you plan on integrating blue shirts?

I'm going by Hama's interpretation that the Vipers are simply "blueshirts" with different uniforms. His early comics supports this, as I remember "blueshirts" being occasionally referred to as Vipers in some of the earliest Marvel GI Joe comics, a good 2 or 3 years before Hasbro even produced a Viper figure (also, the fact that the Tele-Viper figure appeared a full year before the Viper figure lends credence to the idea that Hasbro must have already considered the "blueshirts" as Vipers as Hama did, since it would seem odd that they'd introduce a variant of the basic trooper before they would introduce the basic trooper). Design-wise, I'm thinking of the Vipers wearing the distinctive "blueshirt" red mask under their reflective/mirrored faceplates (sort of like the balaclavas bikers wear under their helmets). |

I love it Z.
Yeah, Eels should have been Sea Serpents. What about instead of specific troops, they end up being uniforms worn by the Vipers when in those environments? A Viper in Sea Serpent gear A Viper in Snow Serpent gear Can explain them as Vipers with expertise in those areas.

I also like the structure, Zulu, and I think the Eels and Snow Serpents could be one in the same. An elite unit that specializes in harsh environmental insertions for recon, etc. I think of them as the utility men--versatile and capable of all missions to a limited degree.

All great suggestions guys. The idea of "Eel" as nomenclature for the suit/gear worn by a specifically outfitted amphibious environment Viper-type soldier is a suggestion that's been offered to me in private before, and I'm beginning to warm to the idea.
The alternative is for the Eels to be a small full-blown amphibious/naval infantry unit (maybe just a single platoon) distinct from the Vipers. Playing on the idea of them being Cobra's version of the US Navy SEALs (SEa, Air, Land special warfare operators) and Navy EOD Diver special operations teams, maybe I can call them EELs, for Expedition Expert, Littoral (in the US Department of Defense Dictionary, an "expedition" is defined as a "military operation conducted by an armed force to accomplish a specific objective in a foreign country"). "Littoral", of course, is a synonym for "coastal" or "seaboard". |

This is a decision I've been agonising over for the past few days, but I'm instituting a radical change with how I'm making the reference bible.
As those of you who've been following the project (both in this thread and in its earlier incarnation in the "What secrets lurk in the filecards?" thread and my original art thread), I originally just picked and chose the Joes that I wanted to include (and these were mostly Joes introduced by Habro between 1982 and 1987, the ones I grew up playing with and reading about). At some point, however, I decided to make all the Joes (even ones I didn't particularly care for), influenced by requests from HISStank forum members and the idea that every GI Joe character has its own fan(s) and including every single individual Joe would serve to broaden the potential readership for the reference bible. That approach is backfiring now, as I just can't work up the effort to do the training school research and write comprehensive "flavour" text for the filecards for Joe characters I just never really cared for or never knew existed before discovering their entries at YoJoe.com and/or JMM's GI Joe Comics Home Page. It's killing the interest I have for the project (as it's becoming more like work than something I'm doing for fun). In light of this, I'm scaling down the project a tad, removing the characters I just can't be arsed to care about (so long, Ninja Force!) and replacing them, not with "greenshirts", but with Steel Brigade-styled generic troopers that, while not being adequate replacements for fans of those characters who won't be making the cut, will at least (hopefully) serve the purpose of helping generate some sense of personal connection to the project the way the original Steel Brigade mail-in figures did for the ARAH toyline. |

Sounds good Z.
It is your project afterall, a personal project, and well it's nice to include "requests", it is still your baby and your vision. Forcing a request in, if it hurts your vision and your personal enjoyment of the project, is a negative and not a positive. Can't wait to see how you reworked it. I ran into that with my J.O.E.verse. I wanted to include everyone and everything, along with my own creations, and it just got too big and escaped what I originally thought up. It's your baby Z. Do what you gotta to have fun with it.
