Valgurra, these are awesome. I'm not one to complain about the hobby, but I wish you would send a sample of your work to the GI Joe Club. Whoever they had doing the art for FSS3 was not able to capture the heart of the characters like you have here.
Also, I would love to see your take on Fast Draw, my favorite character. And, do you mind if I print a few of these, and use them for my personal collection?

The art is from battleground game. But is the art on the box that attracts customers to look at the toyline.

I would so love to see cards like this at retail again... (not to mention the figures) Was just looking thru boxes for a figure and found a ton of boxed Joes- even just as far back as the POC cards they had some great designs and then Retaliation went for the generic 'Roadblock' packaging... :(
Really nice layouts and design here! |

Rise of Cobra had great art and it didn't make the line sell like hot cakes. Cool art only helps sales if it compliments a toy concept that the consumer is interested in, it doesn't create interest in the toy.
There is nothing to indicate that this art, while great to fans like us, would drive toy sales with new consumers. You have a pre-existing interest in these characters and toys, therefore this art merely appeals to your pre-existing interest. That doesn't equate to the claim that it would drive interest where it doesn't already exist. I also believe that RoC didn't actually have bad sales... they were just under expectations. I believe after Transformers and the huge shortages that followed the movie, expectations were VERY high and retailers ordered big. Too big. I feel that RoC gets a bum wrap... sales were quite good, but supply unfortunately outstripped demand. Not saying Joe would be a success if it had nice art again, just that it would possibly help. I know at a minimum a lot of collectors had no interest in a Retaliation carded collection... many who typically are of the "buy 1 for opening, 1 for carded" persuasion didn't bother with the carded one. The packaging was simply horrible and amateurish... not just in its lack of artwork, but also the fonts and design. |
