I created a "mock Up" of Cobra Commanders Throne for those of you that have access to a 3D printer.
There are a few loose Vertices, however the file should print fine with Afinia or Makerbot software. THe format is .stl You may have to shrink the original model down about 1 quarter the size (.25) for ARAH figures. http://www.filedropper.com/cobrathrone375 |

I may have missed it, but im really surprised no one brought this up in the numerous "DEATH OF THE LINE"/"HASBRO SUCKS AND THEY OWE US" threads that permeate this board. Everyone is crying about how the line wont survive because hasbro doesnt see it as a profitable ip, but the reality is: it just doesnt matter. You've got people like faceless one, gi guppy, and others who have their feet on the ground floor of the 3d printing phenomena. and when i use the word "phenomena" it is not in hyperbole. The rapidly lowering cost and growing accessibility of 3d printing machines, along with stronger materials and the wider use of modeling programs such as cad and rhino, will revolutionize product consumption across nearly all industries. Jewelry, firearms, and yes action figures will no longer be the exclusive realm of people who own the licenses and need to sustain a business with hundreds of thousands of orders. It will be the smaller collector/craftsman community that keep these brands afloat for the people that love them.
And really, this is a great thing. The collector/consumer will be in more direct control of what is produced. Feel like commissioning a custom head for a hundred bucks? someone will probably be willing to do it. The casting community is already strong and we've got people like broken canyon (i might have name wrong) creating card backs and packaging. It'll only get better from here. |

Nice throne. Wish I had a 3d printer.
bumbarusher, maybe I miss understood your posting but if collectors start doing their own thing if hasbro doesnt and include the packaging, etc I think thats were copyrights get involved if they are going to make a greenback off what they make.

Entirely possible, re: copyright issues etc, but to date it has not happened yet. If I make a 1/18th head of a guy with a beard and sunglasses, maybe that's monkey wrench for you. Maybe I say its a portrait of my dad. Point is that likeness infringement is a tricky thing when you aren't talking about extremely recognizable characters like snake eyes. But seriously, if collectors don't havve enough se heads by now, we never will.
And if we look at this from the perspective of piracy, we all know that most unauthorized products still find a work around to enable trade. I.e. you pay a monthly subscription fee to my site. Low tiers for less money, higher tiers for more. I make 1/18th bodies on my 3d printer and send them to members of my site for free. Different number of parts for different tiers. This is a ery ineloquent example, but you see where im going. Thirdly, the license owners can get in on the profits. Imagine the profit margin of designing a joe figure but never having to physically produce it in order to sell it. You sell the cad file. Maybe its like a movie rental, and you make it expire. Maybe you just charge more and the buyer and use and print it as much as he wants. Will people pirate these cad files? Absolutely. But if piracy was really such a profit killler, the music industry would have perished long ago. |

3d printing is not yet a point where the quality will justify the cost of these items since only a small niche will be producing them. Until the printing technology increases to get rid of the scan lines and produce a full blown replcia of the 3d image, I won't be buying into it. The higher cost of the higher quality 3d printers and thier availability is just not there yet. In no way will this ever supplant the offerings from a true China Hasbro factory modling prcoess...not at least for another 10-15 years...

CDs don't sell anymore. Piracy almost has killed the recording industry. If u get to the point of making figures.and remaking packaging that resembles hasbros and you start making a killing on it that will cause Hasbro to look and see what's going on. I doubt though a poc style figure or head is even able to to be printed right now.

CG, I think you're right... and wrong. 3D printing is not at a point yet to be a real threat to toy companies, but I don't think it will be anywhere near 10 to 15 years. I deal with CAD designers and engineers every day, and most of them believe, as I do, that the 3D printing industry is less than 2 years away from the type of boom that the cell phone experienced in the last 5 or 6 years. One day the Blackberry was the "be all, end all" of cellphones, and then the next day you have pocket sized computers that you carry around that literally have an app for everything. Mark my words my friends, 10 to 15 years and we'll be printing cars and stuff like that.
AND THEN WE WILL BRING ABOUT THE RISE OF THE MACHINES!!! Oh, BTW, awesome throne. |

I dont think the industries out there will put up with it once it starts hitting their bottom line, especially car parts. As cool as that would be, they will loose too much money and head it off faster then the record industry did with piracy of software/music.

Yeah, cd sales have plummeted, but music companies are making more money now than they ever did, just in a different format. In regards to them coming down on piracy, when did that happen? I know they ATTEMPTED to curb it, but as I stated before, people will find a work around. And they have. Selling songs instead of albums. Digital goods instead of material. Your attempt at a counter-example only supports the theory that I put forth and that many in the field of 3d designing and modeling already adhere to.
the argument that a $500 dollar printer not living up to your standards is proof that 3d printing is inadequate, is like saying that cas are a poor mode of transportation because you drive a used pinto. I've ordered multiple heads from shapeways and een very pleased with the results. Of course I drive a 98 corolla, so maybe my standards are low, haha. lastly, where did all the talk about 'hasbro doesn't care aout g.I.joe' go? In other threads people act like the figs they make are akin to leftoers being swept off the table for the dog. And here we're saying that a small community of collectos making their own shit under non-copywritten names will suddenly grab hasbro's attention and they'll come downon them with fines and court orders? If that's true, why haven't they gone after the casting community? everything casters sell are direct replicas of existing hasbro products. 3d printing will forr the most part be new designs, possibly copywritten by their designer. If they were going to start bringing the hammer down it would have happened already. |
