Could fan art face legal problems?
I write GI Joe stories for fun, and only for fun, and might post one. I want to believe that it is safe to write GI Joe stories or make GI Joe dios/artwork, at least as long as I'm not making any money from it and not trying to sell it. Safety of just for fun is my hope. But GI Joe _is_ copyrighted and trademarked, so couldn't a company sue or prosecute for unauthorized writing or art anyway, if it wanted to? Has anyone here on hiss tank ever heard of such a thing? I hope I'm being paranoid, I'd like nothing better than to be told that this is a groundless worry. But between recent changes to copyright law that I have little hope of really understanding, and who knows what other factors, I feel like I have to at least ask this question. Me, paranoid? I hope so. Thanks so much.

many people do comics and dios. In fact there is a whole web site of just gi joe dios. As long as your not selling them, I think your fine. Lets see some of your work.

As long as you are not profiting from the work in any way you will be fine. Remember, copyright is only around for the money. If there is no money involved chances are they really don't care.

I've been doing it for a while now... I'm co-founder of the DC2 Universe ( Entering the DC2 Universe ), and was the writer of 'Tales of the Green Lantern Corps', 'Green Lantern' and 'Legion of Super-Heroes'.
We had several member of the boards that were actual paid DC writers, log on just to check us out. We've actually been acknowledged by DC staff members at Comic-Con, and no one has told us to stop yet, so I'd say, like the other guys said above, as long as you're not getting reimbursed for it, you're golden. There have even been some of our stories that were published first, that bore a striking resemblance to DC universe tales that came much later down the road. Nothing we could do or say about it, but sit back and say "hey, didn't we do that about 4 years ago?" |
