Plus the gas you would have to pay, and court fees from bashing scalpers in the face. Oh and the mail man brings them right to your door for you..

LOL! See, I agree with all but the "bashing" part. In today's economy, I don't knock anyone trying to make a few extra bucks. Know how I deal with Scalpers? I look at their prices, smile and take my business elsewhere. ;)

Under that logic it would be fine to pay a real estate agent $50,000 to find you a $70,000 house... (sorry, I'm in the house buying process so everything is house related these days)

you shouldn't be pissed off at the people selling them --- should be pissed off at the people buying/bidding on them which drives the prices to be this high. some sellers list their items at cost + eBay fees + PayPal fees and maybe just a little over for gas.

I would say that it is rare to find a seller of the newest waves on ebay that are doing it 'for the good of the hobby'. i.e. doing it to help collectors with their collection.
When it is the latest wave it is being sold because of the 'I need it now' factor that people are willing to pay. I'm sure there are people here that bought a hooded Cobra Commander or Buzzer off ebay when they first came out and are probably kicking themselves. When people buy the latest waves from a store, it denies another person those figures at retail. Not everybody lives near a Walmart, Target or TRU and would have to drive considerable distance in order to find those empty pegs. I've been dealing with this with Star Wars figures for the last 13 years... There are a few folks out there that will, say buy a case of figures, and sell off the case duplicates for cost. That, I'm fine with. |

I'm pissed at everybody--buyers, sellers, innocent onlookers, the homeless, high school teachers, Steven Spielberg, etc. I only like myself and one of my dogs.

And the next person who gets there "denies" someone else. Big deal. Get there first. You can beat me to it, or a "scalper" can beat me to it. Makes no difference to me. Either way, I leave with nothing, and either way, it's going to a collector in the end. The only question is whether or not it's going to the collector with the deepest pockets, which is the real issue people have with "scalpers", whether they admit it to themselves or not. Popular collectibles have a secondary market value, and that's never going to change.

I just ask that army builders show a little restraint for a while. I think it took me 2 years before I ever saw the '95 Star Wars Stormtrooper at retail. And these days, a figure generally only ships for a few months. And as far as beating you to it... Many of the people that 'beat' me to figures are the guys at the store every morning at opening. They resell figures and collectibles for a living. I collect as a hobby and work for a living. Therefore, I cannot be at store openings in the morning. And due to these people that resell for a living, gone are the days of asking for stock to be brought out so that you can pick out the figures that you want. I could care less if another collector 'beats' me to it. That is just part of collecting. I don't refer to someone walking out of a store with one of each of the new wave as a scalper. But when you see a cart full of figures and nothing on the pegs, that's a different story. |
