If the shipping amount was stated as such in the description OR shipping calculator before you pressed buy...then you have no case, if there was no shipping amount listed you may have a case.
Basically no matter what it actually cost, if it was stated and you agreed to pay it, matter closed. |

I would never bid on anything without knowing the total cost at the end...and that includes the shipping.

Now, this case is different from normal. No one should bitch if the price is clearly stated, but this was not. She messed up and gave the "out" herself, by stating "this is estimated and I'll check with the PO and get back with the correct" which she never did. DP should have refused to pay until saw the actual shipping, but he went ahead but did request clarification of the shipping. So in this single instant, as described, he does have a case.

You can contact eBay if the shipped was overly high or used to jack up the price of the item, and they *will* deal with it. They are very strict about that. Sellers using shipping to jack the price up are warned/banned quite often now. Contact eBay, tell them what you were charged, tell them the actual price, offer to show them the mailer if needed, provided the seller does not help you out first.

That's what I would have done. If she says she'll get back to me and didn't, then I wouldn't have paid until she does.
By paying her she probably assumed you were fine with that cost and everything is fine. Whether or not she's overcharging or breaking ebay rules is another issue. |

Most people can read who place bids on internet auctions...some CHOOSE to read when it benefits them, not the other way around. Most sellers, my self included, have a detailed s/h rate posted in their auction details. If an item is $X and a discount applies such as $.50 or $1.00 for each added item, one would think that the person placing bids has read and clearly understands the terms. I don't care if you place a bid on 100 items...the terms are $X for the first item, $.50 for each added item. Don't assume because you bought 20-30-100 items that YOU make the rules. Would charging $.50 for each added item really make sense if someone purchased 100 items? I wouldn't expect someone to buy 100 weapons and pay $52.50 for shipping and handling, but if the details are clearly explained, then YOU must honor that sellers terms. If you don't like the terms, don't bid.
On the flip side, I have over estimated shipping charges on a few occasions. I cannot see overcharging someone $5-10-20 just because you didn't take the time to weight the item or get an actual quote for the items you sell. To pay $26 for a $.99 cent item to Canada is insane. One figure shipped to Canada using First Class International rate in a bubble mailer costs $2. The envelope $.50-$75 in the event you can't buy in quantity. At the most you should paying $3-4 for a figure to ship from the US to Canada. To have the Bomb Disposal unit shipped in a 6 x 6 x 6 box; First Class Inter. should cost no more than $4-5...anything more was shipped via a guaranteed service like Next Day, Priority. $26 was a blatant rip-off if shipping was really only under $3. |

A lot of sellers claim the extra cost is for "handling" charges, which include packaging, bubble wrap, tape, labels, etc. But I'm pretty certain Ebay doesn't care about that stuff - particularly when it is excessive, ie. more than a dollar or two.

I hate when that happens too. It'll say $25 to ship to Canada when I know for a fact it doesn't cost that much. I just don't buy. You need to get this stuff in writing. Regardless of what the calculator says, I always inquire about the cost to ship.
You made two key errors: bidding without finding out the shipping first, and second, sending the money without getting written confirmation from her. Hate to say it dude, but buyer beware. |

I think that is a reasonable way to think about shipping. Without nickel and diming each and every cost associated with buying/selling on eBay, listing fees, final price fees, PayPal fees, you build in that "profit" either in the price of the item or in a "handling" fee. You cannot charge "actual" shipping costs...there are the supplies, materials needed to conduct business; you may as well give the items away for free. Buyers would love that...me included! A reasonable s/h charge isn't bad if you are buying a quality item and receiving prompt services and, ultimately, YOU are happy with said charges. If you are happy, great...otherwise I say jump to the next auction...there are plenty of people willing to earn your business.

This, unfortunately, is a sneaky technique utilized by some eBay sellers. They advertise at a low price and "make up for it" in shipping costs, which apparently are not subject to eBay fees.
Best way to curb this is not to always confirm shipping costs before bidding. |
