Alright, so alot of us here sell on ebay quite alot, and none of us it seems are to happy with how hard ebay is making it on sellers. I realize that alot of their policy changes over the past year has been to weed out bad sellers. Unfortunately those changes also punish good sellers and put their businesses in jeopardy, leaving everyone open to scams/unfair claims/un-warranted negative feedback.
So I've been thinking about what can be done, or should be done to fix this. I'm not naive enough to think that ebay will actually listen or implement any changes, but I would like this thread to be a sounding board on ideas about how to fix it. That said, I realize that bringing back the ability for sellers to leave negatives will probably never happen. With that in mind, I think that there should be buyer ratings the same as there are seller ratings. Let us rate buyers on communication, how long it takes them to pay, etc. Heck how about even letting us give a rating on how polite and courteous the buyer is during correspondence. I mean we need something to kinda even the playing field again. So anyway, anybody got any good ideas? |

I think there should be an option where any given seller can post how quickly they want their payment in. I think it's complete BS that you can ask for payment within 24 hours (or whatever), then only receive payment AFTER you file a Non Paying Bidder Report. I also think it's complete B.S. that Sellers can't neg buyers. I understand wanting to avoid retaliatory feedback...but not all buyers merit positive feedback.
I really like your idea about using a rating system for buyers as well. I also think eBay should make all listings FREE on the front end, since they're going to charge you on the sale itself and via PayPal fees anyway. Want me to list stuff? Then don't scare my away from it by charging me 3 times in a row. eBay/PayPal should also really consider doing business in a manner that doesn't completely negate consumer protection laws. If you read their fine print...you turn over your rights the minute you use PayPal. |

In addition to equal feedback, force sellers to post better pictures and descriptions. Sometimes sellers are purposely vague with the condition. Which is why I buy all non-toy/comics stuff through Amazon.

Buyer ratings would be interesting. However, eventually it will reach a point that eBay is going to realize that they are losing money because people sellers will turn away.
eBay seems to want to attract less private sellers and more brick and mortar stores to use their site as an inbetween to the masses. The problem with that is that is eventually a seller realizes that they may have enough of a customer base and following and exposure to create their own website. I personally believe we may see some or all of these happen. 1 - The Federal Government will find some way that causes paypal to be regulated as a bank allowing a more thorough exposure of who is using it for what. This means tax on everything. 2 - eBay puts more responsibility to the bidder even if it is a disclaimer before every first bid on an item. (Are you sure that you carefully read the items description and pictures?) 3 - eBay starts to charge a fee on all purchased items like an auction house adding a commission. Heritage Comics does this as does Sothebys and other auction houses. The charges are placed on the sellers and the buyers so the fees are divided. By the way. I have yet to lose a paypal challenge. This is not bragging but because I have my stuff together and when I am right I relentlessly fight. If the scammer beats me, then the scammer will try it again with someone else. With that said I have given a few things away for free when I have screwed up. I sold a set a Holiday ornament that turned out to have a piece that was flawed that I was honestly unaware of. When I realized it I simply refunded the money + shipping and told the buyer to keep the item. My bad... then... my bad. |

I've read the fine print and as soon as I become employed full-time again, I plan on pretty much stopping ebay/paypal altogether because of what they can do. But for now, it's the only legitimate means I have of bringing money in. |

Also, I don't know if it's possible, but is there any kinda of program that could automatically detect if a picture is of poor resolution, so that sellers wouldn't be able to use fuzzy/poorly lit photos? I mean, i won't bid or buy an item that uses a bad picture, but alot of people will and that's where the problem lies, because some sellers don't have the means or care to take a good picture. |

Stop with the ridiculous fees!! They have gotten out of hand with the extra fees and the double taxation between ebay & paypal, they hit you on both ends.

i buy alot of single comics on e-bay and the thing that i hate is when a seller charges like $8.99 on shipping for a single comic and for each additional comic they charge an extra $1. its ridiculous because theres no way a single comic cost $8.99 to ship

I believe that they would probably it rather be like the world's largest online shopping mall. Not a bad concept really, but there's a hell of a lot of difference between someone that finds a bunch of crap in their attic and wants to make a few bucks and someone that sells quality merchandise as part of their regular income. And those of us that do use it as part of our income and go out of our way to insure good customer service is penalized because of rules that were put in place to make sure that the buyer can get their money back when they purchase a used 1972 sewing maching that shocks the crap out of them when they plug it in. Maybe there should be some threshold for sellers, that once they get above a certain amount of sales or feedback, that the ability to leave a negative or start a claim gets much harder for the buyer. Also I really like your idea about splitting the fees. That would help tremendously on the financial side of things. |
