in all seriousness, it really might cost around that to ship threw UPS, the defiant is huge and shipping is getting more expensive, plus insurance and all that good stuff. i know its not what anyone wants to hear but its expensive to ship big items like this.

Honestly I would not trust anyone charging less then this on Defiant. The crawler and doors are so fragile there is just no other way. I have shipped Defiant before even if you ship it with a ton of padding and take all the percausions it's still a crap shoot as to how it will arrive. Defiant Complex needs to be treated as though it is thin glass when shipping. I would honestly rather drive 12 hours then even think about shipping another one

You know, these shipping limits are heracy. I sold my NES on ebay with like 25 games, game cases, manuals, controllers and more. The ebay limit on consoles was 15 bucks, to ship it priority with the games was 37 dollars! I think they need to make better exceptions for their limits.
I mean what if a customer wants priority or overnight? Also what if you want to include mandatory insurance on a high-dollar item? With the shipping limit set in stone, if the actualy shipping is higher you can't really ask the buyer for more money and thus you're losing money. If you bill the buyer with higher shipping anyway they can report you or leave negative feedback. What ebay really needs to do is update their shipping calculator to accurately reflect the actual shipping amt. |

I forget how much the shipping on my Defiant was but the thing is super heavy. Also My Defiant came packaged with all three componets seperately in the box, so the box was huge! They used a box that a Grill came in with a reinforced wodden pallet bottom. Needless to say, the shipping was high (I think they deducted the shipping a little due to the wooden pallet) but I wasn't concerned about breakage on the toy either....and that thing is very fragile in a few places.
As for $130 shipping, that sounds about right. The toy is probably close to 10 pounds without packaging then factor in the oversized box charge. |

As an owner of a Defiant who is looking to sell it, The shipping is pretty dead on, I don't know what you guys would expect to pay for shipping, but if you have a Defiant in good to mint condition packing it right is essential. It is big, heavy, and very fragile. The guy also deserves some cash for going through the effort to pack it up, it would at least be a 3-5 hour job depending on the level of protection and level of disassembly. In my case, I want to avoid all that and try to sell via Local pick-up.

It sounds about right concidering the fact that the seller may be trying to break even on the sale. I won a defiant last year on ebay (missing some parts and parts boken and needed a good cleaning) and with the bidding and shipping the total bid was close to $130. You see if the seller would have started the bid with a minimum starting bid the seller may just get a few dollars more for what the seller really wants. Some bidders wont even bid on a item if the seller is asking for too much. I think it is a fair deal for the seller and buyer now if the bidders jack up the bid up to over $50 then the winner gets screwed.

I read somewhere on one of the Joe forums awhile back that the Defiant weighed around 30 pounds (Don't know if this is right or wrong). With this weight, it would cost me about $85 to send from WA State to Kentucky for example and that is Next Day Air. The issue however is the overall dimensions of the box or boxes that it is shipped in. Unfortunately, that is where UPS screws a person. Done right though, shipping cost can still be kept pretty low while maintaining the utmost protection if the person has a clue to what they are doing.
As for the time spent by the seller getting it ready for shipping and how much to charge for that, it comes down to what level of greed does one have. Do I charge $10-20 bucks an hour or more to prepare an item for shipping and add that on to the overall shipping charge or do I figure that into the opening bid amount knowing that for a Defiant, I am going to get a butt-load of money for it anyway? Maybe it's just me, but when I sell very expensive items on ebay, I don't charge any more than it cost me for packing materials and raw shipping charges. I figure if they are paying that much for the item anyway, why not give them a break. Speaking from a business perspective, maintaining and bringing in more customers by not screwing them or at least making them feel like they aren't getting screwed, is just good business. I know I am in the minority though. |
