If you have an auction where the bidder's IDs are kept private, what's to keep the seller from shill bidding?

I have often pondered that same question Obi....I pondered it enough at times to pass on bidding on items.

The only way I bid on auctions like that is if I know what a fair price for the item is. If it goes over that then I do not feel bad at all for stopping when I did.

If I pay max bid fairly on an auction...fine, but if I was hornswaggled...foul.

I once asked a seller why his auctions were private as they were only joe items, and the answer he gave was that it keeps the buyers ids kept out of the watchful eyes of scammers that are looking for someone that has enough cash to drop X on a defiant or something along those lines.
Then the "PAYPAL USER VIOLATION! ENTER YOUR NAME, PASSWORD, SS# AND A GOAT OR YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE TERMINATED!" phishing messages. I've also wondered if there are sellers out there that make their listings private then bid on their own items just to fluff their feedback ratings. |

Don't get me wrong...I can totally understand their uses. When I won my terrordrome...I got a message from another bidder of the auction asking me if I was willing to sell it to him. I replied nicely stating this item would eventually end up in my son's hands one day...and that it wasn't for sale. I also added that his maximum bid was outdone by 3 other bidders beside myself...so he wasn't willing to pay what I did at auction time, why would he pay it now?

I thought of this based on some of the stuff they used to pull on MMORPGs overseas. Here's my scenario. . .
Say you're some dude in China or the Phillipines. You make an ebay account and you carefully "farm its seller rep up". Maybe you and several others have several multiple aliases with duplicate emails to keep SafeHarbor from noticing. Maybe you and these guys rent out some office space. You go after the hottest; most collectible items on the market and set up phony auctions. You shill the bid and then wait for some poor sap to try and snipe. They might pay, they might not. But in the end, all you need is one sucker to get fished in. Right? -PJ |

Wow, PJ. Talk about exposing the harsh realities behind the scenes at eBay.
That's some food for thought right there. |
