Communcation on my part has nothing to do with it.

Considering your level of experience, C.I.A.D., you probably won't need this, but others might find some advice I have on my site to be useful.
Tips for selling on eBay and some tips on how to buy on eBay. |

That's great info... the tip on bidding slightly higher than your max bid makes a lot of sense, I never thought of it that way. I've been outbid on some nice GI Joe stuff by a mere $0.50 cents! And that sucks big time!
I would only add a little bit to the recycling boxes part because I don't want anyone here to run into the problems I've run into. Make sure your box is still good enough to recycle. This is from experience. I'm in the shipping and receiving business, have been for 13 years. A company I worked for in 1999 was anal about recycling boxes, even the ones that had been recycled many times before. This only usually applies to UPS, but if a box is squished, the corners crushed in, sometimes the UPS driver will refuse either initial pickup or delivery. This has happened many times to me. It's completely up to the individual driver. This has never happened to anything I've sold on eBay because I use the USPS, but I have had product returned to my company because the box was not in good shape when I've used UPS. This pissed off the customers to no end, as it should. Delays and extra shipping costs all had to be absorbed by my company. But like I said, the management insisted we re-use all boxes, no matter their condition. Of course it would be common sense to everyone here to only use and re-use good quality boxes that aren't smashed or crushed, but I figured I'd let everyone know that UPS does sometimes refuse pickups and deliveries if the box is trashed.

Oh, yeah. You definitely don't want to keep using boxes that appear crushed. I know this wouldn't apply to all areas, but here in my city, you can break those down and leave them at the street to be recycled on trash day. If it's in good shape, though, it definitely saves money.

My system of the ebay feedback "procedure" is simple. As a buyer, I leave positive feedback as soon as I receive the item and confirm that it is what I bought and is in the condition that was described and isn't missing anything (whether it's toys, electronics or jewelry for my girlfriend.......whatever). As a seller, I leave positive feedback as soon as I am paid. Works for me. I understand C.I.A.D.'s frustrations. But there's always going to be a couple of bad transactions out of 1000. Whether it's mis-communication, slow shipping or even a lost or damaged item.

Here's what kills me about eBay & feedback: If you're a buyer, you'd naturally expect feedback once you've made payment. You've completed your end of the transaction. As a Seller, you are expected to leave feedback once a person pays. Well, why are sellers labeled as "Feedback Hostage Holders" when they don't leave feedback right away? Is it really so hard for buyers to leave feedback once they've received their item(s)? I've always left feedback the minute a person pays and/or once I've shipped their package. As of today, I'm waiting on feedback from 20 different people....ranging all the way back to July 21st. Yet God forbid if certain buyers don't receive feedback immediately. They then accuse you of holding their feedback hostage. I mean, granted, you'll always have a schmuck of a seller that will hold your feedback as hostage intentionally. 9 times out of 10, they use feedback as a retaliatory measure when you leave a negative feedback rating for them (ie - look at my feedback. Both negatives I have are retaliatory from eBayers who I left negatives for...and RIGHTLY SO). I'm really getting tired of having to send e-mails to buyers asking them to leave feedback for me as I've left for them. So, I guess my question is: Is it wrong to hold feedback until it's been received? |

There's no shortage of debate in the OAI community as to whether eBay auctions are shipping or destination contracts, but the language of their terms heavily favors the position that they are, in fact, destination contracts. PayPal's terms, and the fact that they will rule in favor of a buyer if you don't have a tracking number, lead us to the same conclusion. That would mean that sellers are responsible for delivering their items to the buyers, not for just shipping them. If you're not willing to eat the cost of the item, require the delivery confirmation and insurance. Most shippings go off without a hitch, so for a lot of $5 and $10 sales, it's probably not worth the risk of potentially losing higher bids on your items. It's not a huge deal to issue a $7.50 or $12.50 refund out of your pocket once in a blue moon. For something that costs a bit more, however, you should always insure and get the DC number for your own protection. Getting stuck for the price of a $250 item wouldn't feel good. That doesn't do much for what's happened to you in the past, but it's definitely something to consider for the future. |
