johnelway items - Get great deals on Toys Hobbies items on eBay.com!
Check out his completed auctions, look at how much this guy made on all this stuff. His Plastirama stuff went for crazy amounts. Although most look legit, some of these auctions I just can't conceive. Are these really worth that much?

Don't feel bad. I like Mirage too... not all that much, but I thought he was pretty cool.
But my taste in Joes is questionable... some of my favorites are Claymore, Tracker, Grid-Iron, Rapid Fire and Super Trooper. ;)

Over in China - and I'm only telling you what was explained to me - they used to do these "Midnight Run" figures. Basically, the guys at the factory would take a few figures from an early (prototype) run, and give them custom paint jobs. Some of those "midnight run" figures have gained a little fame because they would do several of them the same way (they would do several with the same paint job) and people liked them, and they were known by a few serious collectors.
Hasbro did NOT authorize these "Midnight Run" figures... but they were done through the Hasbro factory in China - basically, unauthorized figures by the factory workers. I have the "Midnight Run" of the Night Force 6-pack from 6 or 7 years ago (the TRU exclusives). There were around 50 of these "special" sets made and a few collectors (including myself) took an interest... mainly because of the NF Tracker figure. But they are NOT authorized by Hasbro, and they are really just well done customs that are manufactured on a somewhat larger scale. If you really want a Mirage like that, there are plenty of very capable customizers on the Tank who could make one for you, and it would be just as "authorized/official" as the figure you saw on ebay.

Joe train went up on ebay over a year ago... it went for something like $8,000. Is that ridiculous? It was to me, yes. However, for the guy who bought it... I'm sure he's having a blast with it. It's probably worth every penny to him.

That "Duke" figure is fairly common. Dukes like that show up on ebay all the time. You'll notice the word "Midnight" in the item listing. Various numbers of figures like this are available on ebay at any given time... although, these "midnight" run figures don't seem to pop up with the newer figures. If you really have questions about this, you should PM Gyre Viper. That guy could write a book on this stuff. He knows most of the sellers in China. Bottom line is: you avoided spending a lot of money for a figure that isn't anything really special. You could get one just like it through the tank for less than $50. The best thing about the "Midnight Run" figures was the fact that they were "factory produced". They were made in the same factory with the same parts, same plastic, same paint as the regular Hasbro figures. It's a very high quality figure... but it's not a Hasbro-authorized figure, and the customs that some of the guys make around here are just as good if not better.

That's great info. You've also eased my anger of losing the auction. Thanks man.

That Mirage is a legit hand-painted prepro sample. ALL of those prototypes are legit.
The Mirage isn't "worth" what it went for... but it is... but itz not... I mean one could debate on and on for days about rarity and preproduction and variations etc... and what actually goes into the "market value" for things like this and what you get is sometimes nothing less than chaos. There's people who have bought things like this for much cheaper and then there's people who had no choice but to pay more for things that have dried up. Once things get locked down in collections... then they tend to dry up and vanish for a while and sometimes that means when one shows up... or if you want to wrestle one away... the price goes up. It can be VERY circumstantial. But that Mirage was definitely legit. But it is not necessarily one of a kind or anything like that. The person who won it won a LOT of that stuff in those auctions for prices ranging between fair and really high compared to what some of that stuff "normally" goes for. He really came out of nowhere and took a big BIG haul. It'll be interesting to see if he actually pays (ie things getting relisted or second chanced). I only bid on one thing and I lost.

I had a "midnight run" VvV Scarlet where they painted the middle of the torso where it was tan into flesh tone instead. I can't remember what version it is exactly, but it's the one in a blue uniform which was a repaint of a green one.
