Say it ain't so. The project is back! And this time I'm not effing around. Wood is the medium this time with strength and size being the payoff.
It took me a while to get back around to this. My film project is still going, but I wanted to get back to this because I felt that I could work on two things at once, since neither project was terribly cost-intensive. As most of you who followed the last thread know, I became quite disappointed with the foam as a medium since it had trouble holding the paint. The paint apps looked fine and dried well, but at the base, the paint would never hold to the foam when a three-point pressure weight was placed on it (aircraft landing gear). Because of the softness and the propensity to leave divots in the flight deck, the foam, while a well-intentioned material that was easy to work with, was ultimately unsatisfactory for durability. If the airplanes stayed on the painted surface for any prolonged period of time, the paint would strip away. But enough of the history lesson. I'm sure you want to see the new design, unveiled: Here are some specifics: Overall Length: 22.5' Beam at hull: 4' Beam at Flight deck: 8' Height from waterline to deck: 2' The ship will also feature 4 elevators and will be divided into 5 smaller sections for ease of construction, storage, and shipping. The hangar deck openings will once again be 24 inches wide and 12 inches tall, 6 inches off the waterline. Here's the cool design feature that came out of my final design: there will be six inches of "space" between the flight deck and the hangar deck. Instead of making the bottom of the flight deck the ceiling of the hangar deck, I will create a suspended ceiling that will act as both a false deck and a storage for the electronics and wires. I'm really excited about this new project and I plan on actually building it like they do at the shipyard, building each piece completely before placing them together in the end. Since there's no real "connecting" (the pieces will slide together and sit at rest), the last step will be exciting and easier space-wise, since I have another place to put it other than my tiny basement. Of course, I do realize that this will require more precise construction methods and exacting specifications, but I've often been known as a perfectionist, so this won't be too much of a problem. Anyway, I will update regularly (not everyday, but multiple times a week), so I'm glad that I'm back. Hope you guys are still along for the ride.

Thanks, fellas! I have the utmost confidence in this build. Considering how difficult it was to work with that foam in the end... I'm used to working with wood. It'll be fun.

Awesome.
(BTW: I think you meant to list the measurements in feet not inches) |

Poor foam masterpiece. But I think wood would be a much better medium in the long run. Can't wait to see this get underway.

Glad to see you back at work Zoomie. I had almost given up on this. I can't wait to see this thing as it goes though.
