I have finally gotten the materials and time to get this started! This is a project I have been planning for a few months now. I posted my Water Moccasin Squadron Commander in a separate post, he has since been named, here is his story and the story of the development of the Anaconda(with pics):
Victor "Papi" Delacruz When one considers the available intel on the COBRA Anaconda/Harpoon program and the man behind its development, "Papi" Delacruz, the real purpose for this vehicle becomes clear: revenge. Then Victor Delacruz was a victim of friendly fire in Operation Desert Storm, aka Gulf War 1. A tank commander, he suffered third degree burns to his neck, lower jaw, torso and arms. These burns were sustained when his vehicle was hit(circumstances classified)and he chose to remain to pull his critically injured loader from the burning turret of his M1 Abrams tank. The loader later died of his injuries, the driver died instantly. Delacruz was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple heart for his actions. After a period of physical recuperation at a VA hospital, he was honorably discharged. Delacruz was far from recovered though. Delacruz suffered deep psychological injuries from the nature and circumstances of the attack upon his vehicle. He became addicted to pain medication and eventually found himself a homeless vet. These circumstances created a bitter and confused man who later turned to a life of crime. The criminal underworld was only too glad to receive him and he found his calling in the illegal arms trade. Returning to his home in the southern tip of Florida he soon began fanboat operations running guns to mainland drug dealers. Soon he was running marijuana and cocaine into the U.S. for a major Columbian drug lord. An older man, he was soon dubbed "Papi" by his much younger crew of hardened criminals. Now Papi Delacruz was living the high-life, a world of parties, women, drugs and the thrill of illegal criminal operations, dodging local law enforcement and the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard put the brakes on Papi's breakneck pace. Lieutenant j.g. Skip A. Stone, codename Cutter, brought the gunrunner to justice. A sting operation was executed in the waters around Miami against Delacruz' gang. A high speed boat chase and firefight ensued. Papi's friend Alfred "Freddie" Jones was killed, who sustained a gunshot to the neck. Papi was finally brought down when Coast Guard .50 caliber rounds pierced the engine block of his speed boat and the motor seized. He emptied two remaining clips of ammo against his captors then surrendered. Papi swore revenge against Cutter, who stood over him as the cuffs were placed on his wrists. Victor "Papi " Delacruz was found guilty on multiple charges, ranging from grand larceny to murder, as well as illegal arms trafficking and drug smuggling. He was sentenced to life in a maximum security prison, with a chance for parole in 25 years. A man in his late 40s, Papi was looking at a death sentence. Several years later it was determined by The brothers Tomax and Xamot that it would behoove COBRA to assist in affairs occurring in South America. COBRA intel showed that Venezuela was preparing to attack its southern neighbor Brazil. Brazil contained vast iron ore deposits(necessary for the production of steel)matched only by Australia as well as a massive petroleum deposit found offshore. The brothers approached COBRA Commander with a plan to assist Hugo Chavez in his hostilities against Brazil. When COBRA Commander asked what was in it for him, he was told: a gracious petroleum discount to fuel the COBRA war machine for years to come. Chavez agreed to the shadowy assistance to his operation, which was to occur within the year. In a bid to secure help in-continent, COBRA agents approached Columbian drug lords for mercenaries. Many were more than willing to help, but it was found there was a common request in addition to weaponry and precious metals: Papi. The drug lords and criminal gangs knew COBRA had the resources to spring their friend and business partner out of prison. It was explained that Papi had never squealed, he'd remained loyal. No one would roll without Papi. Get us Papi, and we'll fight. Upon hearing this Tomax and Xamot sent various lawyers and agents(all Crimson Guard members)to bring about Papi's release. A Judge was bought off as well as a parole board(though one member needed additional urging, his wife spent a year in a wheel chair with two broken femurs). Now freed Papi found himself in the hands of COBRA. He was asked by his Crimson Guard attorney that COBRA wished for him to run operations to secure the Amazon river during a conflict in Brazil. Papi agreed, and was exceptionally pleased at the bounty offered for his services in addition to his freedom from prison. It was not long before Papi found himself back in Florida being trained on the Water Moccasin. The vehicle was a quantum leap beyond the homebuilt fan boats he had relied upon. However when he considered the Amazon River and the scope of the operation planned after a briefing, he told his superior: "You're going to need a bigger boat." He was encouraged to draft up specs for what he thought was appropriate. What he came up with was to become the Anaconda/Harpoon. A larger twin engined fanboat, a command and fire control center. A floating AWACS. What Papi didn't say was that he needed a vehicle capable of destroying a certain hovercraft, driven by a certain Coast Guard Lieutenant... Looks interesting. Might I ask what you're using for plastic filler? Or is it cut and glue?

Thanks all!
DOC: I used two incomplete WMs and one WM top half... Sailor Joe: Thankfully the old toys are polystyrene, same plastic as model kits. So it has been a lot of cut and glue. You can see the beginnings of filler panels which is 1/16" white styrene, down the bottom centerline is .080" X .156 styrene strip to fill the gap... |
