I have been on a scratch building kick lately, so I decided to try to make my version of the Cobra Maggot. I didn?t have this toy as a kid, but I like the looks of it. There is actually some real-world precedent for a two-part tracked vehicle. Also, this s vehicle seems more ?realistic,? in that every modern army has self-propelled artillery.
I found a two pack of 1:72 tanks that I decided to use as the base for the ?Maggot. ![]() I started by boxing in the tank hull with styrene sheet so that is has the Maggot?s boxy appearance, except for the tracks. Then I roughed out the armored somartment where the main gun is positioned. I bought a Tamiya German 88mm Flak model in 1:35 scale a while back, and I?ve been using it for spare parts for various projects. I decided to use the main gun from the kit for the Maggot. It is probably a bit large for 1:72 scale, but I like the look of it, so I think I will just go with it. ![]() Here are the two components of the vehicle o you can get a rough idea of what I am trying to do. ![]() |

This already looks great. Are you going to shorten that first tank some?
I would suggest (or request) making a single thread with ALL of your completed vehicles all together in the first post. Then every time you finish one in their own thread like this, you can add the finished pics to your whole big-scope project catchall thread.

J James,
I will take your advice. Should I do a "1:72 scale vehicles" thread in the completed projects section? Just wanted to make sure I get your meaning. |

Then you have a nice list of all your WIP & Finished projects that is easier to find and sort then going through your post history via the user/member details section

This is amazing.
Your work with kibble and styrene is amazing. Is styrene hard to work with?

Styrene is easy to work with. Most scale model kits are made of injection-molded styrene. It is sold in sheets of varying thicknesses and other shapes. These are some solvent glues that bond it together very well. It cuts easily with an Xacto knife and can be sanded. It is great for model making.

I?ve been seeing these decal rivets out there for a while. I thought this might be a good time to give them a try. Basically, they are raised bumps on waterslide decal backing. You just put it on like a regular waterslide decal. They?re oversized for 1:72 scale, but it?s still a fun effect.
Here are the rivet decal strips on the bare plastic: ![]() And here is the primed vehicle: ![]() |
