I am working on several aircraft at once now, but a lot of the work lately has been filling and sanding and priming. I have been in the mood to do some scratchbuilding, so I decided to start on a project I?ve had my eye on for a while now, the Python Patrol Conquest
![]() The python patrol conquest is a re-paint of the X-30 Conquest, a Joe vehicle. The Conquest is loosely based on the X-29 forward swept wing plane. There are some significant differences however, such as a single vs double vertical stabilizers, single vs twin engine, the shape and size of the wings, and other items. Therefore I decided to start with the Su-47 Berkut kit instead. ![]() The Su-47 is a much larger plane with some big differences as well, but I think it will be an easier platform to work off of. The shape of the wings and the twin engines and twin vertical stabilizers make it look overall much closer to the Conquest. ![]() The Conquest had its engine intake underneath the fuselage instead of on each side lime the Su-47, so the first step was to fill in these openings in and aerodynamically convincing way. ![]() I made some some curved forms from styrene and spaced them in the intake gaps as a guide. ![]() Then I filled in between them with Miliput epoxy putty. ![]() When this dries, I?ll be able to sand and smooth it out so it looks more like a natural part of the fuselage. |

The filling with the miliput seems to have worked pretty well. Some more sanding and filling is required of course, but so far so good. I was working on some of the other major components. The forward-swept bing the look great on the plane. I made the top of the vertical stabilizers horizontal instead of pointed and attached them at an angle. Instead of traditional horizontal stabilizers at the tail, the Conquest has downward-angled ones, giving it an almost x-wing type appearance from the tail. The Su-47 tail planes were entirely the wrong size and shape for this. Ironically, I ended up using the wings of the x-29 kit for this purpose. They?re an almost perfect match for what is needed. I originally bought a 1:72 x-29 kit for the Conquest?s base model, but after fiddling with it, I decided to get the Su-47 kit instead. The x-29 was surely the idea behind the conquest, but it was going to be a much more difficult model to modify: it has a single engine, a single vertical stabilizer, no horizontal stabilizers, and the wings were short and stubby. So, I decided to go with the Su-47, even thought the shape is different is a lot of ways. I guess the x-29 kit wasn?t a waste after all in the end as I?m using some of its parts.

You're scratch building skills are quite impressive!

The really interesting thing about the python patrol conquest is going to be the paint job, of course. I?ve thought about a couple potential ways of doing this, and I think I?ve settled on one. There are basically three colors to the plane: maroon, black, and silver.
![]() After priming, I painted the whole thing black. Then I let that dry, and used aluminum to do that portion. I?m going to let this dry really well, and then start the complicated masking scheme so I can apply the maroon color. ![]() |

The paint job will be fun to block off. Do you have use of a laser cutter to make the mask?
I like that you changed the asymmetric nature of the Berkut to match the symmetric Conquest.

Yeah, it?s a good question about the masking. My first thought with the paint job was to do the maroon as the undercoat, mask with a grid of thin strips of tape, and then spray the black and silver. I opted not to go this route when I looked more closely at the pattern and saw that the red lines are not straight at all, and the squares encompassed by them are of varying sizes. So, my plan now is to paint the black and silver first and to place a ton of little squares of tape on to mask the pattern, followed by the maroon color. I honestly don?t know if this was the right call, but we?ll find out, I suppose.
