I know I have a lot of irons in the fire right now, but as I plug away at finishing some of the other 1:72 cobra aircraft, I decided to try one that required quite a bit of modification or scratch building.
The Hurricane was a toy that I never owned, and I honestly don?t even remember it from my childhood. It leans more towards the sci-fi style of vehicles that became increasingly common towards the end of the ARAH toy run. Therefore, unlike my previous builds, there really wasn?t a specific plane it was based off of. Staring at pictures of the Hurricane, it started to remind me of the SAAB Viggen, with its broad delta wings and large canards. So, I bought a Hasegawa 1:72 version of this plane. The first thing I addressed was to re-shape the front of the plane, using styrene to bridge the engine intakes that needed to be covered towards the nose. Next, I detached the wings from the fuselage, as they attach directly to the engine nacelles on the hurricane. The body of the Viggen tapers after the engine intakes, while the hurricane?s fuselage looks sort of like an arrow head. Therefore, I used a thin sheet of styrene to change the body?s shape aft of the cockpit. I shortened the fuselage and made the sharply sloped aft end. There are a bunch of details that will need to be added to the fuselage, but I think I?m going to do a primer coat and get the shape right and the gaps filled before adding those. Finally, I build the engine nacelles. On the toy, these rotate 90 degrees to allow for a vertical take off. They are basically a rectangular box, sloped at the front end, so it was not a hard build with sheet styrene. I used in interesting vehicle wheel for the engine turbine intake and a spare tank part for the exhaust. |
